CHILDHOOD - - FEARLESS OR INSANE???
by Maureen
When reading the blogs, I couldn’t help but thinking back to my childhood. The talks of comfort foods made me think of what a terrible cook my mom was!! And how my father could have been a professional chef.
I thought back about the tree/bicycle experience I had posted a few days ago! And I started to recall some of the stupid stuff I did as a kid. Now mind you, my brother is 8 years older then I am, so it was part of his entertainment to encourage his baby sister to do a lot of those stupid things! And hey, if it killed me, then he could be an only child again!!
When I was 4 or 8 or 12 or 16, it was fearlessness - - not reckless abandon or stupidity! It was something to do, and if I achieved my stunt, then it was not stupid. If I didn’t, oh well, I suppose even I would have to think it was pretty dumb! If mom knew, I’m sure I would have been locked in my room for my own safety, but, by the time she found out it was either a moot point or we were on the way to the emergency room!
When we lived in Milwaukee, we had a pool in our backyard. Before I was allowed in, I had to have swimming lessons. I mastered that just fine. Our pool wasn’t that big, and I think maybe 4 feet deep. We also had telephone lines that were above the pool. And the pool was adjacent to the garage. Since I was now a pre-Olympic swimmer (yeah, in my dreams along with Olympic Ice Skater AND Olympic Gymnast!) I “needed” to be an expert diver, too. Now, if I saw someone attempt to dive into 4 feet of water headfirst, I would kill them to keep them safe!! But, thankfully I survived that feat. After all, if my “older and wiser” brother and his friends jumped off the garage into the pool - what’s a dive from the ladder!!! Oh yeah, the phone lines...I was the pool toy that my brother and his friends attempted to throw me over!! And I let them!! INSANE!
Then there was the hill. It was wicked steep. And oh so much fun to pedal as fast as we could on the flat part...then take off down the hill...cross the street and crash into the lawn!!!! Did I mention this was pre-helmet laws!! I got away with that a number of times, until I used my brother’s 5 speed bike! I think it only had one speed by the time I got in trouble for that and I had a variety of scratches, cuts and bruises!! Would I ever try that now????? Are YOU insane??!!
Speaking of bikes, when I was about 13, I just had to perfect my bike riding skills. Ya never knew when they were going to add bike stunts to the Olympics!! :D I was able to ride standing up. I was able to ride with no hands. But could I ride standing up with no hands? YES I COULD - –for about 15 feet when I found a pot-hole! And the pavement found me! That was a fun trip to the emergency room!! NOT!! The pain of them resetting my finger and digging street outta my hip was as insane as the stunt! Oh, my bike fared much better then I did!
Have I told you about the Olympic cheerleading dream? I had to be a cheerleader. I was a fat kid and fat teen and now a fat old lady!!. There really was no way that I was going to stand up in front of other junior high students in that short skirt with my fat thighs exposed. Kids could be cruel. But, I had to try anyhow. I could do the splits, back walk overs, flips and all the other gymnastics required. And I had to be the best at split jumps of ANYONE. Did ya know that you can get really good air if you do the jumps OFF THE PORCH?! It was no problem...until I landed in the bushes!! Maybe I wasn’t fearless or insane...just not too bright!
Then there were the flips and dives off the high dive at the community pool! Would I try that now? NO WAY! NOT EVER! But at 13 and the lifeguard was gorgeous, it was necessary! I didn’t suffer any bodily harm, but I did get kicked out of the pool because it was to dangerous and not allowed!! (p.s - 34 years later I dated that handsome lifeguard!)
Oh those days were fun. Never a chance to be bored. No sitting in the house playing video games. No being sensible. Not ever having fear and trying everything. And I have lived to be an old lady!!
What did you do then that you would never do now? Do or did your kids think they are invincible? Share your stories...please...so I don’t think I was the only insane kid!!!!

Way to go scirish!!!!
fissile:capable of being split or divided; cleavable.
Mornin Lynn!
Hey ya scirish!! You got the word of the Day too!!!
Mo: LOL loved your blog!! Brings back memories!
I do remember learning to ride a bike. A boy cousin my age put me on his Mom's three speed bike I was about 6 or 7 and then he gave me a good push! I could barely reach the pedals and steering was a challenge. I fell off several times. Then it was the final push as I stood up peddaling as fast as I could. We lived in Seattle at the time in the Greenlake area and there was a hill... I was flying racing down that hill right into a main busy road!! I made it to the other side and crashed!! But I survived!!! Wahoo LOL No helmets for us either and I was wearing a dress.
Then there was the wagon. Same cousin and it was my turn to push!! Same hill I pushed and ran and pushed again racing down the hill... until it was going so fast that I was being dragged behind. Did I let go!! Hell no! That would have been smart! I still have a faint scar on my wrist from that one!!
I have more stories and you know it seems like it always involves a boy cousin daring me to do something stupid!!! Geez was I gullible or what??
EBJ: Thinking of Paula today!!
Whabbear: You collect nothing??? Not even pocket protectors, or special pens and pencils, paper clips? What about shot glass from the LoneStar or beer mugs??? Amazing!!
Bono: I am going to look up those plates today!
IBB: I cheered when they voted that dumbass Fairplay off!!!
Carol: Rest and take in fluids today!!
Ok going to do some research be back in a bit.
Morning Owlettes. Oh, and good night- I failed to wander back to the computer last night.
Congras on 1st scirish, hi lynn!!
Tina~ the answer is NO- I will never get tired of Jodi's potato salad.
Lynn, I think I am way past therapy.
Mo, great topic. Yes there are a million things I did as a kid I wouldn't do now. Most involved being on a bike. But I think I was at my worst when I was a teen and rode in cars with idiots. Holy crap, how I lived thru that is beyond me.
Maureen: I think we all believe we are indestrucable as kids and teens. I had a yellow 'sting-ray' bike that I would race down the street when I was seven. I'd get going as fast as I could and then let go of the handlebars--my hands above my head in triumph as I sailed down the street. It would either be a rock, or a stick or just bad balance that always tripped me up. Over the handlebars I'd fly--leaving the skin of my legs and elbows on the asphalt. I didn't do this once or twice--no. I think at least a dozen times. I never learned.
I borrowed my best friend's pogo stick--and pogo'd down the street..barefoot. Yep, lost part of my big toe in the springs. The kids on the street followed me as I limped home. They let my mom know I lost 321 drops of blood.
I use to like to sit on the roof with my friends and look at the stars. Did I climb down the ladder like I climbed up?? Nope--jumped. Running jump. Broke my ankle.
How 'bout the time I decided the German Shephard in the backyard of the house behind my aunt's, looked hungry? I knelt down next to the hole in the fence with a brownie. He rushed the fence and bit me--his upper teeth scraping down my forhead--his bottom ones catching me under the top lip. I'm lucky he didn't eat my nose!!
Oh I was a walking accident waiting to happen..and I did just what I needed to do to fulfill my destiny!
SCIRISH: #1 and the daily definition..way to go!!
LYNND: Mornin' Sunshine!
Maureen: It was fun returning to those days--a lot more fun because I actually survived! Oh, and my brother encouraged me to be a daredevil too!
HI GOLDIE! It's gonna be 76 here today, so I guess I am actually going to wear my flip-flops again!
Now that I have mulled over the subject, I have decided it was much more hazardous for my siblings than myself when I was younger.
I mean who didn't encourge their younger sister to take away the dogs food after dad said to stay away? Just a few stitches...
And timing my brother and offering up a bet as he raced down the pee gravel road he was forbidden to go on with his bike? Just a few stitches....
My most daring thing (that haunts me to this day and I never even got hurt)was catching bumble bees in a jar, shaking them silly then releasing them and watching them try to fly away. I never got stung.
BUT- as an adult, I have a phobia of bees. Totally scared to death. An irrational fear that they all remember me and are going to get me!
Morning zona!
zona- why dont you just stick a knife in my heart? LOL
Wow scirish Good on you. Both 1st on blogging, 1st on WOTD and 3 out of the 4 first comments.
lynn d - Tomorrow you must get up 3 minutes earlier.
Good Morning to the other two Early Owls, goldie and Zonababy.
Zonababy - You are really an Early Owl because you are on a different time zone.
And now to read my morning newspaper called "Childhood" and drink my Tropicana. I don't know why I bother to get the other newspaper. I never seem to read it.
Great blog Maureen. I love reading all the stories. I wasn't a dare devil as a child. I was always too fat and scared to do anything. I remember my brother and sister asking me to go sledding with them (we had one of those long wooden sleds), but before I could get my ass down on the sled they would take off leaving me sitting in the snow.
I also remember our Dad taking us to an outdoor pond in the woods to skate. Again my brother and sister, being the loving siblings that they were, would push me out on the ice first to make sure it was safe. Once they determined it was safe for them, my brother would offer to pull me along the ice by holding onto his hockey stick. Of course he would promise to go slow (I couldn't skate very well)but then as we got going he would speed up then whip me (like they use to do in roller derby)and send me flying down the ice screaming until I fell.
Of course I can laugh at all this now. I mean picture this...a fat kid with snow pants and one of those parkas with the furry stuff around the hood, a scarf wrapped ten times around your neck and those bulky winter boots. I mean you could hardly move at the best of times. Now put this kid trying to sit down on a sled and picture her on skates. You have to laugh. That's all I got people. Have a good day.
I have fissiled my pants laughing at all the daredevil stories!
ick...that sound dirty!
Good Morning Shirley.
Maureen - I just loved your blog. I feel like I knew you as a child. I can just picture you doing all those stunts. I can also see lynn, goldie and Zona - all as little dare devils on bikes. You really get to know people in the Owl's Nest.
My childhood sounds so boring in comparison to the others. I was born 18 months after a brother who was born with spinal bifada and lived only 72 days. I was born a 'near miss' spinal bifada with a large soft spot (covered with thin tissue) on my back. I also had a heart murmur and the doctor said "Don't let this baby cry". I am sure he would never have said that today but I am talking 100 years ago (well not quite). Anyway I don't think my feet touched the floor until I was three. We lived in a home with grandparents, aunts and uncles all under the same roof. I was literally passed from person to person. They didn't have bubble wrap in those days or I would have been wrapped in it. Is the picture emerging as to why I am so weird today? Probably. Anyway I had a very overly protective childhood even after the soft spot healed (almost) and the heart murmur went away. Then I went to a Catholic Academy run by nuns where we had to be young ladies at all times. The only sport we were allowed to play was badminton and some of us played it 4 hours a day. I never owned a bike or skates. Oh my God this is boring. I never had a curfew but always came home early for fear of worrying my mom. My sister was always nearby to protect me.
I gave my children a lot of freedom. My oldest daughter was a gymnast and my heart would almost stop when she would fly from one bar to the other but she won a lot of gold medals in B.C. and she was happy. When she went to Nursing School they had to write their auto-biographies. She showed it to me. She wrote about the dare devil things they did on their bikes and the rocks they dove off. All the things I didn't know about and and I am glad I didn't. I thought I had a wonderful childhood, playing dolls and having tea parties. Maybe I didn't. Maybe I missed a lot.
good morning Tink and Shirley.
Oh my gosh shirley, I so remember being bundled up like that. Snow pants and boots and mittens and that scarf... Regardless of your body size before being bundled up- everyone waddled. I watched a home movie the other day of myself and my little brother skiing. I was 6 an he was 3. Amazing we ever got back up when we fell!
Hey Tink, what you missed was stitches and ice packs and lectures that you "could have killed your little brother" or yourself! My brother still shows off his scars that are "heidi's fault" LOL
Insane things as a child. Who me. Aww, never. Yeah right.
When I was 3 years old I used to sing into the box window fan. My Mother always told me I'd get my fingers cut off sticking them inside the fan. I was told to stay away from that fan. Did I listen? Nope. Finally it happened and my pinky finger was 3/4 severed and I was rushed to the ER with a towel wrapped around my finger. My pinky finger is just fine today. Thank you very much for asking.
Then at age 5 1/2 I was watching the circus on TV with my family. I decided I wanted to become a tight rope walker. I went into mine and my sister's play room and tied my jump roap to the back part of 2 chairs. I then climbed onto one chair and stepped off onto the rope. Needless to say the chairs collapsed and once again I was in the ER. This time I had broken my right arm.My cast was cool and everyone signed it.
The last crazy things that I recall doing were when we moved to WVA while my Dad served overseas during the Viet Nam era.I convinved my 2 friends to explore mountain caves and have a picnic. We were told to stay away from these areas because there were bears. Did I listen? Nope. Two bear cubs wondered up to our lunch. We thought they were so cute. We were thrilled until ooops here comes mama bear. We ran for our lives. We lucked out that day. Then winter set in and it snowed. My twin cousins were spending the week end. I suggested a hike on the trails on the mountain. They didn't think it was a good idea. I convinced them this would be fun. Well, I guess we were 10 minutes into our hike at the top of the mountain when I slipt on the icy snow and I went over the mountain sliding and gaining speed. I tried to catch every brush and pine tree as I flew by. I could hear my cousins screaming. My sister never freaked out. She just understood this was me, her sister and I always seemed to survive. Finally I slid belly first into a pine tree and it stopped my descent. OMG, that hurt. After I caught my breath I slowly got up and climbed back up to the top of the mountain. Once I made it back up to the top I told the girls lets go spend the day indoors in the play room instead.
I'm starving so I'm going to go make breakfast. I'll make enough for all.
Swedish crepes topped with powdered sugar
warm blueberries,
strawberries
hash browns
fresh OJ (my Dad has orange trees)
fresh ground Brazilian coffee called a breakfast blend (it smells so aromatic)
dreamatexas - my favourite, crepes with strawberries. Did you mention whipping cream? I love that too. You forgot tea for Tink.
SCIRISH~~~
Congrtas on # 1 and wotd!!
YEA!! EBJ-- on this owl said..
Hello LynnD--
Goldie--
Zona--
Tinka--
Mo-
Dreama--
Shirley-- and all to post while I am writing and the rest of the day~!!!
Well my daredaeevilness was mostly on bikes...
My first one was just hitting a curb and flipping over the handle bars... whe n I woke up I was in mom's lap om the front porch.. the neighbors were all around .. theywere eating popcorn( like watching to see I if woke up was a show)well I did wake up I was ubout 5 years old.. I had my first black eye... and A friend of my grandmother sent me a pressed and framed Blackeyed Susan.. I still have that flower pressed and framed in the same frame ... it is very old now... but I get a laugh out it to this day..
The one I remember most
is the kid across the street had a stingray, with banana seat and the ape hanger handle bars ..and I thought it was the coolest bike on the block!!!
He finally let me ride it one day... we were all going to the school yard to play.. it was only like a block away... but you had to go down hill through a park and into the gravel playground...
Well I went flying ... I was having the time of my life until I hit the gravel playground and realized the bike had no brakes!! I must have spun 3 or 4 times on my side...
Well you know I was barefoot too...
Needless to say... the skin from my knees and elbows was in the gravel.. and my pinky toe got caught in the spokes... I was bleeding everywhere... I just started limping toward home...My sister got mad at me because she had to push 2 bikes home, up hill... until she got home and saw how really hurt I was...
No stitches... but I have a nasty scar on that toe!!! and knees and elbows always healed...
And my dumbest dare devil act was,,, you know how in the circus they walk on a rolling barrel... well I tried this with a roll of barbed wire!!! Yes my first stitches... but we tried to hide in from my mom... at least my Grandma tried to hide it... she and uncle Jack had it all wrapped up before mom could see it... well Granny K had a doctor appt that night and I got to go with... 7 stitches... and it is still an ugly double scar!!!
The same summer ... I was at a parade ... we got there early( the Firemans parade) and we parked on the side of the street .. we were in the bed of the pick up truck... I went to let the tail gate down... in those days tailgates didnt stop on their own you had to hook the chains to the side of the truck... well being a city kid in the country ...I didn't know this ... I held onto that tailgate and it threw me head first into the asphalt.. Knocked me out... mom said she was holding me in her lap and when the parade started and teh sound of the siren from the first firetruck I was up aand watching the parade like nothing ever happened..
We are very lucky to be alive after child hoods like that ...
But you know we did it with out helmets and knee pads and elbow pads... I laugh when i see kids riding there bikes these days... we survived and it gave all of us a little extra character !!! and another TOTD!!!!
Mo~~
What a great topic... I am having the best time remembering all this stuff!!!
scirish~ No longer first time virgin!!
Mo~Yes, it's a wonder we survived those crazy invincible years!
I'm off to town, I have so much to do today but will be back to read and comment.
Jodi~(area 51) you cracked me up!!Had to replace my panty liner LOL!!!
Ooops, I was in such a rush that I did indeed forget the whip cream and tea for you Tinkatia. Shame on me!I am brewing it right now!
Hi everyone above me. I need my caffeine so that I can remember all of the names. I hate to do a shout out and then realize I've forgotten a name or two. Then I feel terrible.
ibebold - I cringed when I read about your cuts and bruises. You are lucky to be here writing about it. You could have been a statistic a couple of times. We would have missed your great stories.
dreamatexas - The whipping cream was great and so was the English tea.
scirish Congrats on #1 and WOTD. Aren't you a smarty pants.
EBJ Congrats on "Owl Said". You're not a fan of Rob and Ambuh, I assume. Too funny.
Maureen Loved, loved, loved your stories. You really go for it, don't you girl? As do a number of our owlettes, it seems. Good for you all. I have appointments to get to today so I will have to come back later and make a small contribution to this great topic. Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday.
Congrats on 1st scirish!
Oh dang....I forgot who had QOTD. Well congrats to you too! LOL!
Welcome home MEK!
Lets see. I did stuff that I still don't think was THAT bad. Like jumping off cliffs into the man made lake/pond. I young guy made the mistake of diving off the cliffs and broke his neck. He survived but was paralyzed from the chest down. I never dive off anything, but I'm more than willing to jump.
We used to climb up on our roof too. We had a pretty high up 2 story house built on a slight decline, so one end of the house was really really high up. Freaked me out to stand on that end of the roof, but you know, I did it anyway. Makes my legs cramp just thinking of it! When Mt St Helen's blew I climbed up on the roof to get a perfect view of it.
So that's about it. My older brother was way more of a daredevil. He used to walk the train tracks looking for stuff. Now the train tracks are no where near where we lived. Come to find out years later that he got caught several times on tressels and in tunnels. One time when he was caught in a tunnel he thought for sure he was going to die. Stupid kid.
Well....I have a ton of sh!t to do today! So I better get busy!
Have a great day all!
Barb
crap.....
Congrats on the blog today mo!
Sorry. I knew I was forgetting something!
YAY!!!! I wasn't the only insane kid!! Thanks all for your stories...I was laughing my ass off reading them.
GOLDIE, OMG...I did the bee thing, too! It was a maynonaise jar, then I would would stand in the doorway, shake it up, loosen the lid and toss it on the grass. I loved wathing the bees fly in dizzy circles!! Until I had the dream...never did it again! And I shall save that dream for another day, but I still remember every detail of it!! Hmmm, maybe it's a Wisconsin thing!!
DREAMA, thanks for the breakfast. Yummo!
TINKA, you had a loving childhood. You were over-protected because you were so precious. Still are!
Believe it or not...I have never had stitches! Maybe should have, but never did! Yep, broken bones, but never stitched up!!
SHIRLEY, maybe we were sisters! I looked like how you described as a kid, too! I hated the galoshes! I wanted shoeboots like all the other kids! And I never seemed to have the "other" mitten...always only one hand stayed warm!
THANKS ALL for seeming to enjoy my blog today. {{{HUGS}}}
Maureen - Your blog was great. We are learning so much about our owls today and I bet there are a lot more to come. No you weren't the "only insane kid". (I can't wait to read Bear's)
I read these stories and imagine how busy all the guardian angels were back then. You would have had about 5 of them yourself to never need stitches.
Thanks for the kind words. I did have a wonderful childhood. However, I didn't know the excitement I was missing.
By the way you always say the sweetest things. Could that be because you are a sweet person? I think maybe I hit the nail on the head with that one.
It's time for lunch and a nap. Since nothing is being offered and I am too lazy to make something for everyone, I will have my usual Slim Fast. See you in a few hours.
Another fun TOTD, Mo. Thanks for the launchpad to more fun stories.
Scirish ~~ wtg! Happy Saturday Owls everywhere.
My only 'near death' childhood experience also involves a bicycle. Although we lived 80 or so miles from Portland, I had won the bike (and an electric range for my mom!) in a Portland Oregonian newspaper's coloring contest sponsored by an appliance store. The bike was my first --- and only until an adult --- and it was a bit too big for me. That didn't stop me from pushing it up a steep, rutted and boulder-laden logging road which I would then descend at breakneck speed. Actually succeeded a few times, but one try sent me flying over the handlebars (seems to be a repeated theme here today), landing on a pile of used bricks at the base of the hill.
Assorted scrapes and bruises of course but the main injury was a very deep gash from a brick edge to the lower left shin. Long story somewhat shorter..........after 3 weeks of 'healing', I awoke one morning with a fever, nausea, and a fall from bed when I tried to get up. A trip to the hospital, tests and x-rays showed I had developed osteomyelitis, a severe bone-decaying staph infection. The external healing hid the severe internal damage. Won't go into the weeks of therapy required after reopening the wound to scrape the bone. TMI and not entertaining in any way.
Daughter had a similar experience but with no dramatic injuries. Her over-the handlebars incident involved a face plant into the daphne bushes and stone corner of the house. I can still see the rear bike wheel spinning in the air with the rest of the bike and daughter buried in the bushes. She came up laughing and unscathed....I lost 10 years, gained first gray hairs!
How rude of me...not feeding y'all!
(Sorry, Tinka!)
being lazy myself...
Deli trays - meats and cheeses
lettuce, sliced tomatoes, onion slices
cole slaw
macaroni salad
potato salad
wheat, white, rye and sourdough bread
condiments
soda pops
teas
coffees
beers
cookie tray
eat up!!
Bon Oregon - You also must have had a lot of guardian angels. Boy yours was a close call. How many grey hairs did that give your mother? More than one I bet.
Maureen - I feel badly waiting for you to feed us after you took the time to write such an interesting post. However feeling badly won't stop me from picking some potato salad, meat and tomatoes to go with my Slim Fast. You are a doll.
Good Afternoon Owls!
Well we have some dare devils! LOL
Tinka: If you had been my child going through all of that I would not have let your feet touch the ground either!!!
Shirley: Fat snow suit kid here too!!! Except I could never find my gloves or mittens and always had to wear a pair of Dad's socks on my hands!!
I did remember that I used to love to climb trees!!! I was good too. Until I decided to climb one of the neighbors Poplar trees! These trees were huge. His house was the oldest one on the block. I think it may have been the original farmhouse in that area before all of the other houses were built. This was when I was about 10 or 11 and we had moved to Aberdeen WA. Anyway I climbed and climbed I know I was up at least as high as the second story roof because I remember looking down on it.
Well if any of you know anything about Poplar trees the higher you go the thinner the branches. I hit a thin one and down I went. I don't remember much of the fall, But I do remember the landing when I hit the street pavement side, flat on my back!! It knocked the wind out me! I remember just laying there as all of the neighborhood kids surrounded me and just stared. I don't think anyone thought of going to get an adult. I finally got enough wind to say "I can't breathe"! The butt head kid from across the street said "If you can say you can't breathe then you can" and ran off laughing his ass off! I tell no sympathy! Now I think how lucky I was not to hit my head, or break any bones!!!
Oh the butt head kid from across the street was 2 years older and damn cute!!! Think Rob Lowe cute!! So I was really embarrassed too!
I showed him tho. I used to play football with all of the neighborhood boys (as most of the neighborhood was boys) they let me play because I was fast!!! Little did they know I would let Rob Lowe butt head tackle me all the time! I was about 13 then!! I got the last laugh!!! Hehehe Geez like I could not out run him!
Thanks for lunch Mo!!!
Responding to Area 51: I "wonder" if Tina ever made it to bed!! And in response to your question---It was kind of funny today..MrDianne asked me if I wanted some custard for lunch today--said something about me mumbling it all night! :)
Hi LemonDeb...great to see you!
Congrats scirish for being FIRST!!
Maureen, thanks so for this blog! I loved reading about everyone being daredevils, well almost everyone.
I never had stitches or broke a bone. I never even learned how to ride a bike or swim. Sounds like a terrible childhood, but I loved it. The only thing we caught in mayonaise(sp) jars were fireflies when we went to visit cousins in the country, quite tame.
Just want to say hello to all the owls.
Tina, ty for the wishes for a great weekend, same to you. How is your son doing with his new license? A seasoned driver by now?
Congrats, scirish!
Afternoon, owls! Wow, 'weenie, this IS bringing back memories! I've totally enjoyed all the stories!
I grew up in Ontario's Beaver Valley, amidst farms, apple orchards, ski hills, and Georgian Bay. There were plenty of opportunities to invent ways to have physical fun! Got example, we strung ropes between apple trees once, and then hooked binder twine over the rope and slid down the rope, from one tree to another.
My friends and I loved jumping into the hay from lofty perches in people's barns. In one barn, we once attached two ropes to the ceiling and attached car tires to the other end. We'd take off from hay bales, riding the ropes, and try to impact each other like bumper cars.
None of these things every led to serious injury. I always hated physical pain, so I stayed away from the more extreme pastimes, like ice hockey!
Probably the most dangerous thing we did was the following (I wonder if any of you ever did this)? We discovered hyperventilating, and got into that for a little while. The technique was simple: squat down, take several very deep breaths, then exhale, abruptly stand up, whereupon a confederate would grab you and squeeze your midsection.
The result: a brief period of unconsciousness, which we thought was a real trip!
Crazy, right?
Shirley: LOL at your mean brothers!
Goldie: I never heard of doing that Bee thing! Amazing!
Bon'O: Horrifying! LOL!
Lynn D: I know... absolutely nothing! So weird. I didn't even have any interest as a kid in building model cars, which was almost a prerequisite for boyhood!
From A51: Greetings, Lemon Deb! Welcome to the nest!
Just doing a quick fly-by. Did anyone send out a search party for Lemon Deb? Didn't realize until reading the last couple posts that she flew in to Area 51 this afternoon.
Here we re, LD, over here in the next tree....waiting to welcome you with open wings! Hoot, hoot!!!
February 9, 2008 5:08 PM posted in the 'other tree' too, just in case.
Here we Are.
Good afternoon all you lovely owls.
Maureen, Good job on the blog. I loved reading all about your and everyone else's adventures. I was not a very daring child. I don't really know why, just boring I guess. My sis and bro were 13 and 10 years older than I, and we moved away from all my cousins when I was 4, so I didn't have anyone to encourage me.
I did do some stupid things as a teen, like picking up sailors from the downtown Los Angeles bus station. That must be where I got my penchant for a man in uniform. We also picked up several hitch hikers. Wouln't do that today!!!!
But, I did raise 3 boys, (4 if you count my husband) and they had some scary 'adventures' probably best saved for another time.
Carol, I hope you are feeling better today.
scirish, congrats on #1 and WOTD.
Goldie and Mo, both of your pictures are probably up in the equivalent of the bee post office, so you SHOULD be wary of all bees.
scrish
Congrats on first!
fun....
mo
Thanks for your blog today, it brought back lots of memories.
I was not really a dare devil, as I was like Shirley, chubby...
Could not really do the things other kids did, as the extra poundage got in the way!
Funny tho, I remember being bundled
up as Shirley described, which only made things more difficult.
whabby
I used to do hyperventilating as well, the only difference I think is we used to drink first, and then one by one do the deed to each other! Now that I think back, that was a crazy thing to do!
I can't believe you used to do that as well, I have never met anyone in my adulthood who used to do that as a teen.
Well we don't have politics in common, but at least we passed out together! :O)
lemon deb
How did you sneak by us?
Welcome to the nest, Stop by more often as I so enjoy your posts!
everyone
I saw enjoyed all your stories today, it has been a gloomy rainy day here in NJ. So it was good to sit back, relax and read.
I am feeling a little better, it has now gone to my ear, my right one to be exact, when I swallow a shooting pain begins and then crawls up and then explodes!
Oh such fun!
Eunice
Shout out to you, love your pic!
:O)
scirish
Congrats on wotd!

:O)
I am going to change my myspace page, It is time to move on! I love those Giants tho!
I am off to look for a valentine day layout!
Btw,
Does anyone remember "Due South" it was a old TV show shot in Canada about a Mounty and his Side Kick Ray. Well Ray was played by David Marciano he is my 1st Cousin. If you go to myspace you will see a pic of him as he left me a couple of comments. He was also in "The Don" "The Shield" and others, His myspace page is viewable to all so you can see what else he played in.
David and I grew up together and spent many summers at the Jersey Shore, It is a great memory of ours and we chat about it often. He is living in LA with is family, So we don't see each other often, However when he does come to NJ, we try a spend some time together!
Ok...myspace layout here I come!
:O)
night.owls.sb - You are so right. This nest has been so entertaining on a very boring winter day. It has been a great read. I am looking forward to seeing your new page.
We haven't heard from Birdee, Lovey or Amicus yet about their dare devil childhoods. I guess we have more to come.
night.owls.sb - I just went to your myspace and it's lovely. So bright and cheerful. That didn't take you long. You are an expert.
Good evening feathered friends!
I guess it's dinner time...
Spiral sliced glazed ham
Macaroni and cheese (extra ooey-gooey!)

CAROL, your cousin was on The Shield???? I love that show and Michael Chilkis totally turns me on!!!
SACBARB, roflmao@ our pictures on the bee's post office wall!! And picking up sailors? LOL! I have a couple of stories, but again, I'll save those!!!
When I was younger I went on a picnic with our bikes with my brother and the neighbor boy. We took cheese sandwichs and they decided to grill them. Our picnic was in a field. Needless to say, the field starting on fire. We were scared to death (probably just me) and the two boys stomped out the fire with their shoes---then they decided to do it again. Same thing....I remind both of them to this day about how they almost set the town on fire!! I was a whimp and afraid to do anything that I might get caught at by my parents. On the other hand, my children were not like their mother. I am still hearing stories 35 and 39 years later that I don't want to know!!!
I am really enjoying everyone's childhood memories today. Mo, it was a great topic and gives us all smiles for the day. Everyone does so great with their topic of the day---thank you. One more thing, we sure get to eat good around here! Breakfast is almost making me get up early---almost!
Carol, I never thought about my "wanted" picture being up. I am going to need a wig and some big sunglasses now so they don't know it is me!! I am thrilled that you did the same thing MO. Now when PETA or whatever comes after me for my confession you can keep me company in my cell.
Dinner sounds yummy by the way...
Happy Saturday!! :-)
Congrats Scirish - we broke your FIRST cherry today!! :-)
I am still trying to get caught up from being gone!! WELCOME to all the new nesters that have landed - jump on in and enjoy the nest!!
We just got home from our golf meetings and picking up our uniforms for the tournament - stopped and ate at the Cracker Barrel - LOVE that place!!
Mo - your blog today was great - only funny thing - I keep remembering all the daredevil stuff my siblings did - SO happy that IBB shared her non-balancing act on the roll of barb wired!! My grandmother tried as hard as she might to NOT let my mother know what happened - I must say - IT WAS NASTY!!!!!!!!
I was the prissy kid, she was the tom boy - BUT - I had my fair share of going head first over handlebars - have two scares on each knee to show for it..
BUT - my most FAMOUS "bad" thing was (and YES, this involves IBB) - every summer, we went to my mom's mom's house - which was on a hill and they had an old General Store building next door - there was a long, winding gravel road that lead to a creek! For entertainment, my older brother, myself and my little sister (IBB) would go down to the creek to play and we'd float sticks under the bridge to the other side and try to catch them - well - on the way to the creek - there was a car junk yard thing - and my brother and I would pick up pieces of tire rubber and throw them at our little sister (yes, IBB) and yell, SNAKE!!!!!!!! and just scare the living shit out of her...... SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, one day, we are all playing catch in my grandmother's front yard and the ball went into the gravel driveway and as I (YES, MEK) went to pick up the ball, I see a rubber tire piece, SOOOOOOOOO, I decided to "get her" and went to pick up the "tire rubber" and yell SNAKE, instead - JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO SNATCH IT UP..(yes, I had my little hand just about ready to grab it) ....... IT'S eyes opened and it's tongue came slithering out and it REALLY WAS A SNAKE!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG - i screamed louder than you could ever imagine - my uncle came outside and shot it - i would NOT stop screaming and crying - until my mother threatened to take me in town for a shot - and I shut up!!
SO - the moral of this story - is that teasing my sister came back to bite me in the ass!!! :-)
HA 50
Thanks for that delicious dinner Maureen.
I need to make a note to self not to type before morning caffeine because the word slipped comes out as slipt.Ding, ding, ding. That's me tapping at my tin head.
mek
There you are!
I missed you!
I am going to read your comment now!
I missed the happy hour bell!!
AND, I think I woke this a.m., with such a bad headache cuz I did NOT drink last night!! :-)
Hey Cpgem - hope you are feeling better - again - MANY THANKS for everything you do!!
OH - and to add to my obsession from yesterday - when I got to my card clinic - I had forgotten about my Close to My Heart order - it came in - SO, now I have more to put away!! LOL
I loved reading about all the "collectors" that we have - made me feel great - as I'm sure all the stories today are making "weenie" feel!!! :-)
Amazing how many bikes are involved.
My Mom had tons of birthday cake left over so I brought some to you owls for dessert tonight:
triple chocolate cake with morsals and fudge
buttercream frosted vanilla cake
Oh my goodness - my little story was REALLY long - sorry about that - and I shortened it up!!
Dreama brought cake - I could kiss you - I have had such a craving for cake lately!!! THANK YOU
Yeah!!!!!

Thanks Dreama!!!!
Hey MEK---
cpgem... good evening!!!
I must add to MEK's story.. That our uncle was asleep upstairs.. and when he heard that blood curdling scream.. he shot out of bed grab his gun and came running... he thought murder was happening... and He worked for the sherriff's dept!! so he had guns close!!!
Any NASCAR fans... Bud Shootout tongiht ... Right now as a matter of fact!!!
Mek - I loved your snake story. Yes it is amazing how many stories involve bikes. I guess that's why I never got to have one.
Maureen - I love macaroni and cheese with biscuits. That's comfort food for me.
Dreama - I hope your mom had a great birthday. Tell her we loved her cake.
night.owls.sb - I went to your page a second time and the layout was changed again. If I may have a vote I liked the first one best.
With all the talk of collecting yesterday and I didn't mention my collection of Elvis memorabilia.
Dreama, do you think he would have noticed that? I wouldn't want to offend his spirit.
well Off to watch the race on the big screen... this is why we got a 52 incher!!!
ibb
Well, Hello there, enjoy the race!
mek
Ha, the snake came back to bite you in the ass! So funny....
dreama
Loves me some b'day cake, thanks for sharing!
tinka
I changed it again, I get crazed over my silly myspace page!
And yes your vote always counts!
IBB - okay - THAT was the BIG part of the story I left out - I really did feel sorry for my uncle - he didn't know what was happening outside - LOL - oh Lordy - it's like it was yesterday -
he, then threw the snake into the back of his pickup truck - and it slithered around in there until sundown!!
AND - I have the BIGGEST snake phoebia in the WORLD!! I can't even hold a magazine with a snake picture in it - can't watch them on tv - OH GOOD GRIEF - and I LIVE in rattlesnake country!! Knock on wood - I have yet (that being the operative word) to see one..
Well I come to check in and I find out SacBarb picked up Sailors???? Whew that woman! No wonder she lives up to her cougar rep!! LOL
Carol has a famous cousin!! That is so cool!!
Whabbear and Carol to weird when I was about 14 or 15 we played the passout game. I only did it once or twice. Kind of freaked me out!! I had totally forgotten about that.

I love me some cracker barrel, the closest one to me is in Mt Arlington NJ which is 40min away, So I don't get there often. I only go for breakfast tho, and I take my parents, it is a nice ride up route 80 and my parents love it!
cpgem - our nearest CB is almost an hour away - so we never go either - but this golf tourney is WAY up north and we'll be putting over 100 miles on the car every day - but it is WELL worth it!!
and - we'll hit cracker barrel several times during that week!!!
Lynn - I had a great day today. We were just lazy and basically did very little. I needed a day like that. I talked to my kids in Hawaii. They are having a great time. I hope we can get a few owls to fly over there next spring break.
ZonaBaby - I am missing you today. Where are you little one?
MEK,
You made me realize that I'm glad I never had a big sister!! Bahahaaa!

Did you/mr mek attend a convention in San Diego?
cp- now THAT was funny - go ahead, twist away!! just don't spill
cp - he worked, I played!!
going out, there were only 20 people on our plane, coming back it was over sold... I would much rather be going there, than coming here -
mek
I had sent some clients to san diego on the same week you were there and they were attending a convention, so I did not know if is was the same.
there were several things going on from meeting people in the hotel.
we stayed at the Bay Club Hotel. was really nice.
the whole staff asked me when I was coming back!!! ;-)
even have several email addresses to keep in touch!!
mek
yes sure it was nice, you got a suite, folded toilet paper, and lots of drinks...Who can ask for more!
Did you ever meet up with a blogger?

mek
Oh well there will be others, I am sure of it!
Geez, my ears are ringing...weird feeling!
cp- it might be that bell that I just will not put down!! LOL...
oh and I KNOW there will be other blog buddy meetings - you can count on it!!! :-)
Hey, I'm back and I'm trying to catch up on all the comments. My hair is now redder and spikier. I like it. It gives me a bit of attitude, especially while wearing these cowboy boots. No lie.
IBB - don't spoil a race - Tina usually tapes them!! and she will be pissed if you ruin it for her!!
Just Lin - glad you got your hair colored and spiked - YES, that is how IBB wears her hair!!
Hiya dear hooters!
Scirish, way to go on being #1 this morning! One of these days it'll be me, I swear! haha!
Just Lin, no I am not a fan of Rob and Ambuh (that is my impression of Rob saying Amber). My huz and I had enough of them all the times they were on Survivor, then a couple times on Amazing Race, then some other shows.
We felt they way wore out their 15 min. of fame!
We are really big Survivor fans, tho, and are really confused by their choice of "favorites" this season. I'm wondering who's favorites they are?
Oh well.
I have to give the topic of the day some thought. I was way more daring in younger years, my best friend and I did things, mostly in late teens/early 20s that I am pretty appalled at now!
We had lots of male friends who I guess we trusted and we never got into trouble. I think given the same scenarios now days, things would be way different.
Today my Paula had an appt. at the vet. They drew her blood and then called me this afternoon to report that her kidney function has improved tremendously! YAY!!
Her BUN last week was 65, this week is 43 (normal is 16-36).
Her creatinine last week was 4.1, this week is 3.4 (normal is 0.8-2.4). So we are heading in the right direction!
We have to continue giving her subcutaneous fluid at home, and another week of antibiotics.
Thank you everyone for your support of my beautiful kitty cat princess! She has been a real trooper with all the poking and stuff.
Oh, Whab and Carol, I remember trying the "pass out" game once as a kid. Too scary for me.
Have a great Sunday!
EBJ - great news about Paula - she is getting better!! YEAH!!! I also feel like Rob and Amber have been on WAY too many reality shows and just need to go away!!!
Hey owls. How's everyone tonight?
I went out for a while and come back to learn:
Carol has a famous cousin;
Mo brought dinner (yum mac & cheese);
Dianne almost burned down the town; MEK & IBB almost got shot;
Tinka FORGOT ABOUT HER ELVIS COLLECTION? How did that happen?
and I now know that Carol, MEK and Mo don't do Karaoke.
I love this place.
And Lynn D: True confession time - we "collected" sailors (going back to yesterday's blog) on a regular basis. :)
EBJ-- Great news for paula... I use to be a dialysis tech.. and those numbers are all too familar.. glad the tx are working ...
And I too do not understand "who's" favorites they are...
only like maybe James and Ozzie!!!!
EBJ: Good news about Paula kitty. I will continue to keep you and her in my prayers.
I never needed stitches or broke a bone until I was an adult. There were the usual scrapes from bike falls, etc., but nothing serious. Once, doing cartwheels on the front lawn on a warm summer night, my hand smashed a snail. That was pretty gross.
Buddy was a good friend of mine from age 6 until he passed away at age 50. He was able to talk me into anything and that remained true even in adulthood. Anyway, when we were 12 we were alone at his house. It was dark outside and he decided we should take his mother's car for a drive. He didn't want the nosey neighbor to hear the car, so we carefully pushed the car out of the driveway and then up the street until we were several houses away. Also, in his attempt to look like an old lady, he put his mother's scarf around his head and tied it under his chin. As we were driving around the neighborhood a car started gaining on us from behind. Buddy, afraid of what the headlights of the other car would reveal, pulled over in a panic and started yelling at me to pretend I was being dropped off. How exactly does one do that? Well, obviously you open the car door, which is what I did. Suddenly we were spotlighted by our own overhead light.....Two 12 yr olds, one who is male wearing a scarf! Then he started screaming at me to SHUT THE DOOR! The other car went passed us without incident. We were so shook up, we returned to Buddy's house, careful to stop a couple of houses away and then push the car back into the driveway.
Hi everyone!
You know Mo, I have been thinking about my childhood all day and then only thing I could come up with is the monkeybars.
While growing up I lived right across the street from my school. So at nighttime I played at the school playground all the time. I just loved the monkeybars. I was very limber back then and I could do a lot of neat tricks. It was a lot of fun.
My mind went right to the gutter after proof reading this comment.
It is a good thing Aunt Flo is packing her bags.
hey SacBarb and Iteach!!
good evening Iteach---
Limber huh!!!
Anyone else hungry?
Iteach - i have been eating tootsie rolls all night and i am NOT hungry - must be nervous eating..
IBB - maybe you should DELETE the spoiler!!!
IBB, I agree about James and Ozzie. I also like Yao Man (I'm sure I spelled his name wrong).
James is F I N E. Whew what a body on that man. I'd love to see him naked! I mean with those HUGE arms and BULGING muscles, can you just imagine what his *&$% must look like???
Maybe I don't want to see him naked, if he was tiny "there" then what a let down!
OK I think I've gone on enough here!
What are you nervous about?
Now that I posted my novel, I'll remark on some of your posts.
EBJ Happy Dance for Paula. As for Survivor, I think their definition of favorites is people that got the most audience response, good or bad.
Dianne/Denver I read what you said about Custard. I'm keeping my eye on you. LOL
cpgem8 So sorry you are a frog today. I hope you get over this quickly. I loved the show Due South!
Goldie You're going to need some mighty big sunglasses!
EBJ-- What do you think of Joel on the "fans " team...???
MEK I forgot to say Congrats on winning the last march. You and your sister don't give the rest of us much of a chance. :)
EBJ - LOL at wanting to see James naked!!! I have thought the VERY same thing!!! :-0
Iteach - I have NO idea - OH - could be the anticipation of the golf tournament happening - I was SO hoping to have lost weight for it - gained five pounds in CA - and should be doing great things - have already ruined several Lenten promises........ :-)
OH and speaking of Lent - Tina, I LOVE to watch people look at me after being to Ash Wednesday service!! when they "politely" tell you that you have dirt all over your forehead!!! LOL
I'm back! I'll have a diet coke and rum with MEK
So happy about Paula the kitty.
MEK? Your mother wanted to take you to town to shot you or get you a shot? This may have been where the drinking started. LOL
thanks for the cake and belated birthday wishes to dreama Mom
Crackerbarrel is just a few miles away and I havent been to one in at least 10 years. It was a great place to take football players to eat on the way home from games. Lots of food for them and I loved the shopping. Think I will have to venture back one of these days.
I can't do karoke either. Not allowed to sing in public. Ok, occasionally when I am piss drunk and in a group i will join in on "earls gotta die".
I found the perfect box to mail my babies valentines pressies in. And Oh I found the cutest thing for the wedding!
If I didnt tell before, my son and his fiancee are getting married in oct. The babies will be in the wedding. Brynn will be the flower girl and walk down the aisle with the brides mom. Gavin will go down the aisle between John and I. I like that idea. Once I got over babies first then marriage I am open to anything. ANYWAY- for gifts for the kids fisher price has a new calologue out which has Just married little eople wedding celebration. Too cute! going to be fun to give to the kids.
Ok, enough rambling...just wanted to pop in. Mr. Goldie is in bed and getting up early to test his students to see if they pass to the next level of his course. After the 4 hours of testing (nuts) they are going out to Pedros and invited me- but I think I am doing a day of what I want nice and warm in my own house. I'll be the good little domestic diva and have a fabulous meal prepared for supper.
IBB is Joel that other big gorgeous guy? If that's him, then I'd like to see him naked, too! Yowwwzzaaaa!
I am also a STRESS eater.....
so I basically eat ALL the time!! LOL
Just Lin - thanks!! I am a bit rusty - but I'll get back into the groove!!
EBJ-- Yes he is the Firefighter...
You what they say about firefighters!!!
They find um hot and leave them wet!!!
Oh My!!
Goldie - drinks are on me!!! You good little domestic goddess.. we'll have to try the singing after our round of golf!! :-)
and - mom was going to take me to get a shot to calm me down!! LOL -
IBB - really now!! I'm so embarassed.. HA HA..
guess I better not miss Survivor on Thursday night!!
I am a stress eater too.
I was so stressed about son't birthday party today that I put everything into my mouth.
iteach-- I am sure it was the perfect party...
Hi Goldie!!
Oh MEK-- you must watch... Survivor!!!
Mary/mi--
If you happen to fly by later... Have a wonderful safe trip... hope the weather is good for flying tomorrow...
Iteach - did you save some cake for me??!! I have really been wanting a piece of cake - at the cracker barrel they had a cola chocolate cake with ice cream and I did NOT get it - now all i can think about is the CAKE!!!
MEK-- I am making cupcakes tomorrow .. you probably don't want me to tell you what kind!!!
It was a very good cake.
Trader Joes Carrot Cake on the menu tomorrow. Baby back ribs, and cheesy scalloped potatoes along with a lovely tossed mixed spring salad. You are all welcome to stop over for some!
Can I drive the cart and sing while we are golfing MEK?
EBJ-- I too have some similar stories from from my early 20's.. I just don't think I can tell THEM in front of MEK...
I do truly feel lucky to be alive!!
After saying that I just undid the top button of my jeans. :)
cupcakes???????
I love ribs!
Its ok ibebold, go ahead and tell us. As the older sister(s) we can take it.
Besides I'm nosey and want to know..
MEK That is totally what I would do too, obsess over the cake I didn't have!
iteach LMAO @ unbottoning your jeans!
Yes, Goldie, you can drive - the things I do for my friends!!
IBB - I'm SURE you are making spice cake with coffee icing.. that is just NOT very nice!!!
and - I'm sure we BOTH have stories that we can NOT tell in front of each other!! :-) But - I'm sure yours are better...
oh - my internet went down for those few minutes that I have been away!!!
me too iteach. And I always buy them when they are on sale and then whip them out of the freezer when the urge stricks. It struck today.
me too iteach. And I always buy them when they are on sale and then whip them out of the freezer when the urge stricks. It struck today.

Packing is done, roots are covered, pedicure and nails taken care of..Whew!! All Hubby has to do is drive us to the airport!
Maureen, don't feel bad. My BOTD was last Sat. Not many posted then either. Saturdays are busy for our owletts.
DianeD~I was a woos too. I did like to ice skate a lot. I was always trying skating fast and whirling around. Many times I would land flat on my back with a thump to my head. I would lay there say my full name and get up. I must have heard some where that people would lose their memory when bumping their heads. I was such a drama queen LOL!!
LynnD~Loved your Rob Lowe story. Didn't he have 52"?
SacBarb~ I picked up hitch hikers too! Scares the bageebies out of me that I did that!
MEK~ I am so excited for you! Take some pics of you in your uniform with the walkie talkie thingies.
We live by a creek.
One day a huge blue racer came on our property to sunbathe on our wood pile. Our dog saw it and sniffed it. The snake bit him on the nose! Dog was ok. The snake didn't fare so well. Hubby was P.O. and killed it. Hubby held it up. It was over 6ft long!
Good night ladies. I am going to TRY to go to bed. Hubby is already snoring. Vegas here I come'''without my thong Tina!!
