Would you marry for money?

our daily blog is a question,
something for us to ponder
it is from Scirish

Would you marry for money

by Scirish

This was a topic for teens in the local paper.

I was amazed by some of the answers and thought maybe it would be interesting to see what we thought about it as adults.

Most of the teens said they would have to “like” someone to get married and money would be a bonus. Some said that they and the person they married would have to be equal money earners. The ones that broke my heart said that they didn’t care about what the other person did as long as they didn’t have to “live in a box on the street” or “dumpster dive” all their lives. Most of these kids didn’t know what love was. “Like” was ok for a marriage. One girl said she didn’t want to get married because she didn’t want anyone tying her down and she didn’t want to share any money she made. It is a subject that most of us were taught not to talk about, but we do think about it and apparently so do kids.

So, what do you think owls? Do we put too much emphasis on money? Not enough? How does money or the lack of, affect your life? Do you worry about your kids and money? How do love and money interact? Or do they?

FIRST TIME FIRST ON NIGHTOWLS!WOOHOO! LOL

I think a lot of people do marry for money and NOT really loving the person!:( It is a sad thing really.

I could never do it..No amount of money is worth the misery of being with someone you're not in love with!

Hi Joey from Va- Good Morning. I must feed my 'fur-babies'. They are looking at me and saying "Since when did the computer come before us?" I will be back after I have let them outside and feed them. I feel very naughty putting the blog first.

Hi Carol, Tink and Joey!!

NO WAY would I marry for money. I think about Jackie O whenever I hear that term.

I need to run to a meeting, but when I get back I will post more.

I so agree, I would never marry for money! Of course its always nice to have some (as birdee would know), however that would never be the reason for me.

I need the love, I need to feel it, I need to connect, hell I need the sex! And its got to be good...

Money can't do that!

I would rather live in a "outhouse" and be in love, than a mansion with no love!

Thanks for todays Daily Blog!

SCIRISH, great topic of the day!

I would not marry for money. I have had money and I have been broke and while not having financial worries was great, sharing love with another is priceless.

My mom used to say...the first spouse was for love and the next one should be for money! She was kidding (she never re-married)...my parents were not wealthy...but the love they had for each other (and us) made them gazillionaires!

CPGEM8 - HI!! How are you feeling?

night.owls.sb said...

I am just thinking some more...

Then there is the flip side:

If one is older and alone as their children are grown, (or childless) and they are struggling financially.

If they get a offer to marry for companionship and to help with the finances, Well then I would say do it! As it works for both parties!
Companionship~~Money a great duo!

Ok, just made a mistake with a name on a ticket, gotta go!

Have a great day all!

:O)

night.owls.sb said...

mo
Thanks for the grapefruit..

I sent you an e-mail...

:O)

Maureen said...

CPGEM8 - If ya accidentally put my name on a ticket to, oh I don't know, the Bahamas or Cancun, that would be ok!!

You made a good point about the elderly. But, sadly too many of the elderly find that if they marry, they lose benefits. And I have heard that in some cases that elderly couples even have to divorce in order to get care for a sick spouse. So damn sad.

LYNN - please come back out today.

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Glynis. I like getting up early. It's a good thing I do because my 'babies' love it. They are patient with me however if I don't feel well and need the sleep. They wait until my eyes are open before they ever disturb me.
Tango, Tia and Teddy have been fed. They have had their little run in the backyard and their ten minutes of training
"sit, stay, leave". I have my tall glass of Tropicana and I am happy.
Good post Scirish, very interesting and quite sad. Did any of us as teen-agers ever consider the possibility that we may have to live in a dumpster? Were there street people when we were young? I am sure there weren't in this city. It was so safe here. The summer I was 16 and working in the drug store I would sometimes be on the four to twelve shift. I would walk up town to catch the bus home at midnight feeling very safe. Now we have so many people, most of them on drugs, who live on the streets downtown, sleeping in dumpsters or doorways. It is no longer safe to be downtown at night. How very sad that is for our society.
We are the warmest part of Canada so the run-away teen agers seem to end up here. They don't realize how rainy and cold it can get in the winter.
I have digressed from the original topic. Would I marry for money? Glynis, you and I think alike. The first thing I thought of was Jackie O. No money in the world could convince me to live with him. No I would not marry for money. I am comfortable and my kids, the same as everyone else's kids in this city, will be well off unless the price of property drops. That's unlikely because they aren't making any more land. The median price of an average home here is way over the half million dollar price range. Most homes cost a million. Right now we have no inheritance tax so as long as their parents own a home most of our young kids will come into money.
Back to marriage, unless it is George Clooney or Vince Gill (sorry Amy) and they like older (but still kind of cute) women I will stay happily unmarried.
Breakfast time. Where are you Maureen? Will I see the menu when I post this?

goldie said...

Congrats on 1st tink!
Good morning owls!

My dad always said to my sister and I "you can love a rich man just as easy as a poor one". LOL

I went the poor route. Man we didn't have a pot to piss in back then. My sister married a man who was financially set and she lives the "good life", but she married him for love.-just got the money bonus.

I guess my answer is never say never. I will never be able to replace the love affair I have with my husband, if something should happen to him, but if somewhere down the line companionship and money came into play- I don't know that I would object.

Mo- I know a couple who really did have to divorce to protect their assets and get help for all their medical. They found love after their spouses died, married and then he got sick. Broke her heart to divorce him. But the only way to keep her from losing everything from a lifetime of hardwork. That is another story for another day- the awful system in this country to provide for the elderly.

Snowing again in WI- does it ever end??????????????

ibebold said...

GOOD MORNING OWLETTES!!!
And you know that includes you Joey!!

Tinka #1..Always!!! Congrats!!

Good morning

Glynis-

MO-thanks for breakfast..I too love some grapefruit!!

CPGEM- good morning.. hope you are feeling better.

Joey -Step away from the cake!!

SCirish.. HHMMMMMM food for thought... It is sad how the kids said they could marry if they LIKED someone...

The kids around here are way different.. they are falling in "love" in high school..and by the time they are 18-19 they have kids... but they are not marrying. they just shack up.. usually with a parent... Gee.. That doesn't make a tough situation harder now does it!!???

I myself... I need to feel loved and appreciated... money just doesn't seem to do that...
so I would have to say NO...
I would noy marry for money...

And on the elderly... they are the ones who should "shack-up" to share expenses..

Hello to anyone posting while I wrote my novel...

yummy -
Hot Oatmeal with bananas and brown sugar, toast and tea. That sounds great, thank you. You are right. I just checked my dictionary and all it had was 3 little words, Tina, Lynn and Jodi. Our three naughty girls are famous even in the Oxford dictionary.

night.owls.sb - I hope you are feeling better today.

Goldie - How sad for that couple to have to divorce in order to survive. Again, how sad for our society.

I must have breakfast and get ready to go shopping. I want to find some cute little gifts for my grandchildren for Valentine's Day. I will be back for lunch Maureen. I don't want to miss that.

Good Morning to all the little owls that must still be in their nests. They must have partied late last night. I think I will check out area 51 and then eat.

Would I marry for money?
Hell-to-the-f**k'n-ya!!!!!
Already did the whole "marry-for-love" bit. It's working out pretty good. So I figure if I ever find myself alone then the next time marry for money and it will work out good to....right??!!

Just kidding.

I have seen some marriages that were made for money. And let me tell you, I would not want to be stuck with those guys. Or any decent guy to be stuck with those women for that matter.

I do have one question though....
If you marry for money are you required to have sex with the rich old fart? Because the answer may just change my mind......

ok....gotta get ready for work!

goldie said...

25- Take that MEK!

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Ibebold and Jodi-
You are right. As the song says, ♬ ♫ "You Can't Beat Love" ♫ ♬

MEK in AZ said...

Good morning, Jodi!!

Good Topic - I was pretty much established in my life, career, etc. when Mr. MEK came along - I had pretty much resigned myself that I would NEVER get married. So, no, money had nothing to do with it.

goldie said...

Barb- you asked exactly what I was thinking!! If sex is part of the deal I would have to think about it.

Tink, yes it was sad. They were both in their 70's at the time. He has since passed away.
My mom is 76 and I wish she would find someone, but I want her find a rich man and shack up!!

Thanks for the nice comments on my new myspace layout (which I am still working on). Who would have thunk it- I actually did something on there after all this time!

~~ waving across the city to Jodi!~~

MEK in AZ said...

Good Morning, Barb in WA - you are TOO funny - Love ya..

Goldie - wow, a bitchslap this early in the a.m., I might have to go back to bed!!! LOL.. Congrats on #25!!! :-)

I was trying to figure out how to put my marriage into words, and I gave up - all I can say is that Mr. MEK is wonderful and I don't know what I would do without him.

Good Morning Barbara and Mek.

Barbara - I think the answer to the sex question is "Yes". They couldn't make enough money in my opinion.!!!!!! Yuck.

MEK in AZ said...

HA HA HA -- had to do that!!! Sorry!!! :-)

Oh - I really do need to get a life and get off this computer!!

MEK in AZ said...

At our little church here, there are SO many seniors that are "shacking up" because they can't "afford" to actually get married - I think that is SO sad.

When I was younger -there was a street in Denver that had these wonderful HUGE old houses and I would say - when I get older, I'm going to marry a rich, old man and live in one of THESE houses - I never did and never would have - but isn't that funny that I thought about it!!

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!! :-)

goldie said...

LOL@ MEK
Congrats on 30!

The problem is that at work I am on the computer most of the day- way to easy to keep a nest window open and pop in and out!

I feel the same way MEK . Well not about Mr. MEK, but about MR. Goldie. Thick and thin and all that rubbish and he just loves me, that is the best way to describe him. And I feel the same way. I may have days that I want to choke him out ;)- but I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Maureen said...

Hey Owlettes,

I have restarted my myspace again, but I was going very slowly. I haven't added very many people...still a little gun-shy!

My screen name is Pua'a Wahine and it is myspace.com/312451675. My page is pretty generic (again!!) and I have my friends and comments hidden. There are still people I would rather not know it is me!

Also, I admit up front...I'm bad at leaving comments!! Dial-up takes forever!

I wanted y'all to know...since I trust you guys!!

Good Tuesday morning, Owls!

Scirish:

Do we put too much emphasis on money?

Not enough?

Hmmmm. Tough question. I subscribe to the "Maggie the Cat" philosophy of money: "You can be young without money, but you can't be old without it", so I put most of my disposable income in durable assets. The trade-off is that life is such a crap-shoot. If I happen to die young, then saving and planning for the retirement years will have been a complete waste of time. And there ARE trade-offs. By the time I retire, I won't be able to do some things, like a strenuous hike up Mount Fuji, that I could do now.

How does money or the lack of, affect your life?

It impacts everything. Life is a series of choices and decisions, and many of them are economic!

Do you worry about your kids and money?

No! LOL!

How do love and money interact? Or do they?

Huz and I were, and are, a love match! I fell head-over-heels for him 11 years ago, and had no idea, and didn't care about, his financial status. So I would say, no.

With a caveat. I think the long-term prognosis for a relationship does have a financial element to it, especially when the two partners in question don't have children and aren't married in the conventional sense.

If Jim and I were really wildly different on our attitudes toward money, I'm not sure the relationship would have survived over the long term, as that initial ardor cools a bit and you really have to confront the question: Do I want to spend the rest of my life with this person?

MEK in AZ said...

Light bulb moment - i see what I did wrong!! :-)

Goldie - I'm so glad that you feel the same way about Mr. MEK!! LOL

Sandie said...

Scirish, great topic! I think it's really sad that some teen-agers are saying they would marry for money! If you're that young and saying you don't care about love, that's so, so sad. Well, really it's sad at any age.

I could never marry someone I didn't love. I'm so terrible at pretending. He would know in an instant that I didn't love him. Now, maybe if he didn't care about that and he had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel . . . show me the money! LOL

I do worry about my kids and money. I think my biggest mistake in raising my kids is that we give them too much, do too much for them. I worry that they will expect to always live like this and even though we tell them you have to work hard for what you have, they sure haven't had to do that!!

Tinka, I love your new owl! Congrats on first!

Joey, sorry I missed the cake last night--is there any left??

Glynis, have a good meeting.

Good morning, Carol!

Goldie, it sounds like you have a great husband. I do, too, and I'm so thankful for him.

Moweenie! You have a myspace again? Ummm, ahem, can I be your friend? I promise I'm not a weirdo. LOL

Sandie said...

Good morning, Whabbear! I agree with what you said. Money does play a pretty big role in marriage/relationships, especially when values are different. Don't they say that the biggest reason couples fight is over money?

Also, my husband is a financial planner and he says that sometimes he feels like a marriage counselor because by the time couples have run themselves into the ground financially, the marriage is in very big trouble.

One of his friends came to him after about 3 years of marraige... and asked him how he knew so much!!

MAUREEN glad to hear that you are back on Myspace. I don't blame you about being hesitant. It's creepy when you chat with someone for months and then learn that they aren't who they said that they are or are just a head case. Most people are normal and their photos are so much fun to see.

Good Tuesday morning all you wonderful owls.

I haven't read the comments but I will later. I have another busy day today. I am leaving soon to meet some former co-workers for a movie (Fool's Gold) and lunch and catching up. Then I have a sorority meeting tonight. I hope to catch up with the night crew later.

scirish: Good topic. I got married 3 weeks after I turned 18 and I never thought about whether he had money. He was 18 months older and had a job and the world was our oyster. We had some rough times financially, but I never wished for a 'rich' guy. Now, after almost 34 years I am alone and I do think that it would be nice to have a companion to do things with and to talk to when my girlfriends are not available. I also wonder if anyone will ever love me again. I don't think money would be a huge factor, but I would want my assets protected for my children. I have a friend that met someone on the internet and he conned her out of a lot of money.

It is sad today that there are so many young people that think they have to marry someone to get money. Do they just not want to work? Are they just lazy or do they not know that working can be a satisfaction in itself?

I could go on, but before this becomes a novel I will quit.

Have a great day everyone.

MEK in AZ said...

Whabby - GO to Cher - Huz will be sad that he missed it when you all get back and talk about what an excellent time you had!!!

Good morning everyone!

Congrats on being first Tinka!

Jigglin, good to see you over here!

IBB hope you feel better.

I've been married twice now, neither time were for money.

My current huz and I just bought a house together, which is a really good feeling.

We still own the house I had bought when I was just divorced from first huz.

We are working hard to pay the house payments and the responsibility of having a rental.

I don't think I could marry for money. I have dated wealthy men in the past, and now looking back, the 2 that come to mind first were not people I would have been able to trust.

One was a scout for the NY Yankees and had a big huge World Series ring he wore. I figured it was to let everyone know he had $$. He had a roving eye and our relationship didn't last too long.

There is a big Senior Citizen community near here, and lots of them come to the medical clinic I work in.

I am amazed at how many of the couples live together, they say they can't marry because they would lose their benefits (most are widows or widowers).

On another note, I'm also amazed at some of the goings-on over there. Lots of hooking up happening!!

And I've heard more than a few times of a single woman who lives in the community, who greets all the newly widowed or divorced men who have moved in by walking up to their house barefoot, with a bottle of wine and a smile!! LMAO.

Paula is sitting on my lap while I type, I guess she has forgiven me for giving her the morning antibiotic dose a while ago.

Have a great day everyone!

From the Confessions of an Addict blog...

MEK,
About 15 years ago, my grandma gave me some Currier and Ives dishes, and that started my collection obsession. :) I soon became addicted to the hunt for missing pieces to several dinnerware collections I had started. I was spending my days off traveling to antique stores buying more dishes I didn't need. LOL! I finally sold most of my collections on Ebay, but I still have my Currier and Ives and Old Curiosity Shop dishes. Those I'll have til death do us part! ;)

I thought I was an acrobat too when I was younger. :) I broke a finger doing an aerial cartwheel off the end of a balance beam, and I broke two toes on a diving board. Sometimes, I wish I was still that fearless, but with age comes the realization that we're not invincible. LOL! I don't even like roller coasters now, because I'm scared I'll be in one that will fall off the track.

OK, back from my BNI meeting. I had to give a presentation this morning, so I was up extra early just so I could feel sick and nervous. It went great though, so now I feel MUCH better. I hate public speaking, but I am good at faking it so people don't always know.

SO...marrying for money... I can't even imagine it. When I was a little girl, I used to pray a lot. And my prayer was simple. "God, give me someone to love who will love me too." I never prayed for a big wedding... I never prayed for a big house or a lot of money. I prayed for love! And when my prayers were answered, I hit the jackpot!

Nowmercy,
A few months ago, I hurt my back at work trying to lift a heavy dog, and it was a wake up call for me to start taking better care of my body. One of the things I did was add a monthly massage to my list of priorities. Wow, what a difference that has made! I can always tell when it's getting close to time for my massage appointment, because I can feel the difference in my body. I love my massage therapist! Your job helps make my job a little easier. :)

I still have two blogs to catch up on, but I need to run some errands before evening rush hour starts. Be back in a bit. :)

ibebold - I am sorry you are not feeling well. Drink lots, stay warm.

Jodi - Cranberry and orange bread. My favourite. Thank you.

Whabbear - I wish I could go to see Cher with you. I would even spring for the tickets. I would love to see her. I also wanted to see Celine in Vegas but that didn't happen either.

Jigglin' in Jax - Welcome. Is your eye on our little owls? Please don't scare them. Some of them like mine are still babies.

Dreama - Heard you had fun in chat last night. See anything good? LOL. I agree, all the money in the world won't buy happiness. Our city is full of old rich retired very unhappy people. They seem to be miserable no matter what the circumstances. The lack of it however can bring hardships. It is hard to be happy when you see your little babies going hungry.

Sandie - I agree. I think too many young people have been given too much and they expect it will always be that way. I am a firm believer in adult kids supporting themselves. I am generous with gifts for my kids and if they were ever in financial need I would of course help. I see a lot of adult kids of friends of mine who make a decent living but the parents still help support them. I think they appreciate things so much more if they have earned it. What's wrong with beginning with a "starter" home and an older car. I see a lot of young ones starting their marriages with new homes and cars because the parents made sure of it. I don't think that's helping them.

I'm so glad Rosie's blog led you to Ross' blog so I had the opportunity to get to know you. Thanks again for all the time you devote to the Owls Nest, because it has become my favorite blog! :)

And finally, today's blog...

Scirish,
I agree with Whabbear and others who have mentioned the negative impact financial problems can have on a relationship or marriage. I believe in love and think it's the most important element of a successful marriage, but I also think being financially responsible is important. That doesn't require wealth, but it does require wisdom, and that's something I look for in a man. :)

I wish I could have nice dreams like you do. Mine are all close to nightmares and I don't know why. So many involve teaching. Now I loved my job but my dreams are all upsetting. I am trying to get in to the school and I can't. Or I am trying to get up to go to school and I can't. I am putting on a concert and everything is going wrong.
I think I need a shrink

Thanks for the good wishes for my mom. I really think her heart is slowing down. She is wearing out and it's hard to watch.

Lynn - There are so many different BP meds. Make your doctor keep trying new ones until you get the ones right for you. Our family has had a difficult problem finding the right BP med for each one with High Blood Pressure.

Zona - I can still see my kids sittting in front of the T.V. waiting for their names. It never happened.

Wow, new nesters! Welcome! So, Zona - I DID get my name called by Miss Whatever Her Name Was on Romper Room. I felt like such a star - maybe that's when I became a groupie .... sorry, that's a whole other story (right, Whab?).

As far as the topic today - well, some people have actually accused me of marrying for money (mostly my bitch-in-law), but nothing could be further from the truth. He is a wealthy man, but that isn't why I married him. I can tell you for sure that money doesn't make you happy, and is no help when a marriage is in trouble. The only consolation is that if you walk away, at least you can do it in style. I much prefer to have my own money, and thankfully I have gone back to the profession I was trained for, so I can start to become financially independent again. When only one of the partners has the cash, they call the shots!

Anyhoo ... off to look for some tax receipts (damn, I have a lot of paper around this house!)

Good Evening Feathered Friends!

What kind of hello hole do I live in??? Snowed all day, at 2 pm it was 14 degrees...now, it is 34 (down from 37 @ 6pm) and POURING RAIN. My parking lot is a sheet of ice...I was this close to ending up in the side of my neighbor's house. If it continues to drop in temp, the city will be covered in ice by morning. gggrrrrrrrr.

Since lunch was kinda heavy here's a light dinner:

Hot Vegetable Soup (eat veggies...save a fowl owl!!)
Homemade croutons
Cheese platter
Fruit
Wine
Coffees
Teas
Soda Pops
and another pan of Goldie's brownies!!

I guess we'll need lot's of munchies later on! *wink wink*

TINKA - I saved you a plate of chicken, taters and bisuits. It's on warm in the oven!!
