Is it a Tale?

by nowmercy

I grew up surrounded by “old wives tales”. For example, if you swim after eating you will drown, stretch marks can open and you will bleed to death, you die for the moment you sneeze, and so on. Now I know they come from some kind of wisdom, but they did stick with me. What about you all? What old tales still come to you? Are you passing any on? What are the most absurd? What make the most sense? And while we are at it, how about superstitions? (I can see Whabby shaking his head, no really, I SEE you Whabby lol) I still grab a button going past a cemetery and knock wood to ward off something reoccurring.

Come on, think about it..I’ll bet the nest is a veritable treasure chest of tales and superstitions.

I can hardly wait to hear them all!

Good morning cpgem~~hope you have a good day. That would be fun working with the young couple on a honeymoon.

Good morning iteach..

Mek and #10, you're too much.

Wives tales...let me think.
Does jumping up and down after sex will keep you from getting pregnant.
Yes, I believe that's one, not sure if it really works, tho.

TINA - Congrats on first!!!

Good morning to ITEACH - I have been buying the same Vanity Fair bra for years. They fit well, don't cost a fortune, and is quite cute!!! If you want the model #, let me know and I will email it to you. I usually wait til Kohls has a sale (sometimes they have a buy 2 get one coupon or mail in). Have a great Thong Thursday!!!

TINA - You could put "living on the edge, but not over the hill yet" on that 40 card - if you don't use the headstone.

Wow...you people are first...just seconds ago I looked here and it was still yesterdays blog and now today's is up..and Tina (congrats on first), MEK and CPGEM, itewach and Ronnie you are already off and running. Awesome. And a very good morning to you and to all the owls that will be soaring in!

Childhood beliefes, superstitions, old wives tales..as much as I know these are not real, there is something in me that doesn't want to test the fates,so I:
-don't step on sidewalk cracks(break your mothers back),
-throw salt over my left shoulder when I spill it
-know that when my nose itches, I am going to kiss a fool (my nose has been VERY itchy over the years)
-know that when my palm itches, money is coming (still waiting!!!)
Well, haven't stepped on any spiders lately, so it isn't going to rain today...off I go to enjoy the sun. Have a great day, Owlettes and the boys!

CAROL - Holy crap batman - how could I forget to say "holla" to you?!!? Have a great day - it must be fun planning a honeymoon!!! Our honeymoon consisted of flying down to Brownsville, TX (we stayed at a little flea bag motel - that a lot of winter birds stay), but we had fun border hopping and spending time with my hubby's Grandparents (they wintered down there). Looking back - I don't regret a thing because Grandpa passed away the following summer.

So many people up early this morning.
Tina - 1st again. Are you trying to beat Joey's record? Good Morning Sweetie.

Good Morning Tina, Mek, Carol, iteach, Ronniegirl, Jodi, Vig, and Grandma Moses.

I came from Nova Scotia and it is full of superstitions and old wives tales. I grew up with
"Don't open that umbrella in the house". I was never told why". If two bad things happened to you then for sure a third bad one was to follow. If you dreamt about someone who had died you were sure to have another death in the family soon. I could go on but I won't until I remember a few unusual ones.
I am taking my 'fur babies' to the groomers. I hate those 4 hours they are gone. Even with my kitty the house is so empty. I had a pleasant school reunion yesterday except for the fact that at my age when you all get together there are always some tragedies to talk about. Everyone pretends we haven't changed a bit. That's always a joke. We really needed name tags. Have a good one all owls present and soon to be present.

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning East Bay J. I used to hold my breath every time a logging truck would pass us. I felt that kept the logs safely on the truck.

I always wear a new dress on the first day of school! It makes me feel like I am starting the school year fresh.

My mind is starting to work now.

Bon'O said...

Good morning everybody! Not even 8 a.m here so the coffee has yet to kick in and remind me of any superstitions I still carry.

Does anyone have the TV on? George W's on every channel(including E!) EXCEPT NBC. I find that curious. Instead Matt L. is interviewing Drew Peterson about his dead wives!

A reporter just asked "W" about $4 a gallon gas by Spring......"W" said it's the first he'd heard about it. Is that amazing? Of course, given where his head has been, his ears are probably plugged up. Anyone got a Q-tip?

I'll try to remember some good ones for ya, N/M, and come back later after I rinse the TV images from my early morning eyes. Have a great day y'all!!

Tinkatia said...

Bon Oregon - Good Morning. I was just thanking you for the great picture comment you sent.
I am afraid when George W is on TV I turn it off. I don't like to speak ill of another countries' president but I just can't stand to watch him.

Good morning everyone!!! Flapping and dipping my wing to you all.

Once again thanks to Carol for this nest, nowmercy for the topic and congrats to tina~ on 1st!

I really never grew up with any superstitions other then knock on wood. I use that one.

I am knocking on wood that this trip all comes together. #2 son called when he left San Fran. Should be in Denver any minute on his way to connect and get here this afternoon. Hope he gets a seat! Since he doesnt' book a flight (flying free on the airline) you take your chances.
Mom is on the way from her house (an hour away) so she will be here soon.
Decided to tell Grandma he was coming so she didn't have a heart attack when someone walked in the door this afternoon when she is at my house all alone... that would have ruined the trip!

May I just say once again how much you all make me smile and how glad I am to have found you. And I SO MUCH appreciate your comments and messages on myspace-even if I am slow to respond!!

JODI- dinner and cocktails soon!!!

Tina: First again???? When does this woman sleep??? LOL I guess that is what I get for sleeping in this morning.

Kgirlturtle: I love your quote of the day. I spit coffee and started to choke I was laughing so hard.

Old wives tales Hmmm

What comes to mind is Step on a crack and break your mothers back.

Don't walk under a ladder.

See a penny pick it up and all day long you will have good luck.

We used to put our hands on the roof of the car and Dad would honk the horn when we went through a tunnel for good luck.

I do have a favorite number if you count that as superstitious.

NowM: I have never heard the stretch mark one??? Ewwww I would be so dead if that were true! LOL

Ok going to catch up here and see what others have posted.

Tina~in_ut said...

50....what the heck~ :)~

Tinkatia said...

Nowmercy - I just dropped by again for a smoothie. I thought that would go well with my shredded wheat.

Tina - I was always told watermelons would grow in my tummy too. Also the green on the cucumber was poisonous. After my mom would peel the cucumber, she would scrape it with a fork.

One of the strange ones that my mom still believes today - If you ever talk about someone's face being disfigured (in a fire for example) you never touch your own face while you are describing it. I never knew the reason for that but I can still hear my mom's words "Don't touch your face".

Lynn D said...

Deaths occur in threes.

Stick your tongue out and it will wither.

I know the itchy palm means money coming but I was told one itchy palm means money coming and the other itchy palm means money leaving. I can never remember left or right.

Nice words of the day turtle!!! LMAO!
Tina is first again???? WTF????

Old Wives Tales. I really can only think of one. My mom used it all the time on us kids, and she did the same when she had a daycare with all her grandkids coming to her house everyday. Here it is....

Scenario: Kid toots

Mom then says: "A fart is just air passing over a turd. You need to go and try to poop."

God we still say that to her ALL THE TIME and we get her laughing so hard she crys! All the grandkids will say it in unison! ANd she just giggles and says "It's true!" We can't get her to stop believing that!

Zona said...

Good morning everyone! I am up so early for me, I don't know what to do with myself. Suggestions from TINA and JODI don't count.

GEORGE: Congrats on #1...who's that cute thang in the picture with you? ;)

MEK: HELP!! I made a card for TINA and it is awful! I need help..or it needs the shredder!

NOWMERCY: Having come from a Russian/Irish background, there are so many of these superstitions I have heard over the years. I just need to remember them.

One that my mom always warned about was not to 'mark yourself'. She would go as far as to slap your hand away if you were to say, for example "That guy had a big cut right here.." and touch your arm or leg..or God forbid, your face. The superstition was that you would get the same thing in the same place.

Another was more to do with my Catholic faith as mom insisted on annointing the exterior walls of the house as well as the doors with Holy Water to keep evil away.

I have always worn an Italian horn pendant to keep away the "evil eye", and tied a red ribbon on the rearview mirror to keep us safe while we drive.

Sounds nutty, but so far so good!

CPGEM8: Good morning to you! Do you know the Italian name for that piece of jewelry? I use to but have forgotten.

RGIRL: I don't know about jumping up and down after sex..but the laughter illicited if my hubby did it BEFORE sex would sure do a lot to stop pregnancy. And sex.

ITEACH: How are you doing this sunny morning?

VIG: Good to see you! I do the salt over the shoulder thing too. There is a debate in my family that if the left hand itches it means money is going out, the right and money is coming in..ever hear of this?

Time to split the post in two...

Zona said...

JODI!: ROFL! The cowboy boots...what a great visual!

Note to self: Read all posts before posting, this will avoid repeating what others have already said. Sorry!

TINKA: Hope today is sunny and bright for you. My next stop is the email I owe you. I hope GW gets there today.

TINA: Mr. Z came home and saw the card and immediatley started trying to help..I'm telling you, I'm in trouble here. Congrats on 50!

EBJ: Thanks for the link..I will check that out today!

BON'O: I just don't watch anymore.

LYNND: I believe that death occurs in threes..and the penny is supposed to only be picked up if it is face up..but hell, I need the money!

Waving with wounded wing (who knew making a card could be so frickin hazardous)to GRANDMA MOSES, GOLDIE, BARB/WA !!

Last night as we were coming home from dinner and a movie a black cat crossed the road directly in front of us. David turned around and went around an entire city block to avoid crossing the path of the black cat. I never have a black cat cross in front of me. He on the other hand seems to always get "jinxed" in this way. Of course I love black cats and their beautiful green eyes so I don't beleive in this superstition.

There's an old wives tale among Hispanic people. If you have a headache or not feeling well then put a red piece of thread on your forehead. My friend's Mom did that to me many years ago. (Actually I think your mind goes away from your headache and you're concentrating on the long red thread). There was another one about an egg still in its shell that would do something for you.. It's been a long time. I'll try to remember it. Hmmm...

Zona - I am so happy to see you posting. My imagination runs away with itself. I thought you were sick. Aren't I the worrying Mom? I got a chill when I read your post about your mom saying "Don't mark yourself". Did you read my post? I said almost the same thing. I thought I was the only mother who ever had that superstition. My mom was very serious about it.

Oh, just thought of two more. Must be the caffeine!

If a bird flies into your window and dies, there will be bad luck. I always thought "Yeah, for the bird!"

If you eat pork roast and saurkraut on New Year's Day, you will have good luck all year. Personally, I've experienced the opposite.

Helping a good friend get two vehicles from Los Angeles to Alabama. Her husband is stationed there going to flight school.

Its cheaper for them to ship to LA and drive then to ship all the way to Alabama. So we are making an adventure out of it. I also have family in Atlanta where I am flying out of to return to the island. Going to have a mini family reunion with them.

Maureen said...

TINA, Congrats on being 1st.

Fun topic. We have what we call Friedaisms, named in honor of my mom.

When you sneeze, pull your earlobe, to honor those that have passed away.

Never give earrings as a gift, or the relationship will end. Same as if you get earrings, you will no longer be friends with the person that gave them.

Drop a knife and you will have a fight with someone.

When you visit a grave, leave a stone on the headstone. It lets people know that the deceased had visitors.

If you give a wallet or purse as a gift, always include a penny. The recipient will have greater wealth.

KGIRL - have a safe trip. Have a lot of fun, take lots of pictures! I hope you can meet up with a bunch of nesters. And don't forget to take your Doc Martens...maybe you will find a pair of legs adorned with Jimmy Chu's along the way!

GOLDIE, have a great trip. Family reunions are so wonderful. I'm glad your son is on the way.

Thanks to everyone for your kind and often hilarious comments and messages you have sent me. I am trying.

Lynn D said...

Popping in for a minute.

Thought of another one.

Lift you feet when you drive over railroad tracks for luck.

I think this one was probably started by one of the hillbillies in my family as they always seemed to have holes in the floor board and you didn't want the ole feet getting caught! LOL

Kgirl: Wishing a very fun and safe trip!!! I am superstitious about that. I hope you get to meet MEK and other Owls in your travels! I still think your quote is hilarious!! Didn't offend me in the least!!!

Goldie: The count down is on. I can see how excited you are getting.

MEK: If you are still around what about a rodeo clown tag??

Zona: You are awake!!! I always heard that if a bird flies into your house there is going to be a death in your family. Weird!! Poor birds they seem to have a bad rep.

As far as spitting in the wind, I don't remember who posted that, but in my family it was don't pee in the wind etc... As this seems to be more of a common sense issue to me I have not spit or peed in the wind. Tho I have broke wind when peeing!

Barbwa: LMAO over your post.

Waving to everyone back to housework!!

Lynn D said...

Yay Mo posted!!!! Sending ((((Hugs)))))!!!!!!!

The purse gift my family has used as a superstition also.

But it was never give a purse, a coin purse, a wallet or piggybank with out some money included. Prosperity for the the person receiving the gift but bad luck to the person giving the gift if no money included.

You know I do this if I give one of these gifts and I usually put in a dollar. Inflation!

goldie said...

kgirl, I understand why you are going, I just don't understand why you are going- LOL Must be that I am in WI going to MN for a trip when I wish it was Hawaii. Except for the grandbabies part.

Zona- I have heard a whole lot of these old sayings but sauerkraut and pork????? Where the hell did that come from? I was thinking the same thing about the pig as you thought about the poor dead bird.

Hi MO!!! Waving to you- I have been a bit out of the loop, not sure whats up but hope you are well.

MAUREEN: Now I know why I never had my ears pierced, didn't want to lose any friends!

GOLDIE: My mom never said where the pork/saurkraut thing came from. She just insisted we eat it every year. We honored her memory by continuing to have this meal, and our luck just sucked. This year we had beef roast..and things are going much better. Sorry mom.

MEK: I say rodeo clowns, Boots, Saddles, Rope lasso, Kerchief, can of beer, cowboy hat, chaps (butt less or course) vest with fringe, leather gloves, steer, broncos, cactus, tumbleweeds, rhinestone cowboys, barrels....ok running out of steam on rodeo themes! LOL

♥LOVEY♥ said...

Mek do u print off papers n stuff to use for your cards?

Sorry I'm full of questions today.

MEK in AZ said...

Lovey and Lynn D -

I attend a monthly crop for scrapbooking and each month we do a tag exchange and each month they are a different theme - this month is RODEO (I got outvoted). While I love a good rodeo - I just don't own a boat load of rodeo themed stamps, paper, etc.....

All the tags have to be the same size - we have a standard template for those!! and I have to make 12 of them...

♥LOVEY♥ said...

Zona it's on your page hehe
