Comfort Foods

there are times when i just
need my very favorite comfort
food of all times "french fries"
with brown gravy and ketchup

yep, thats what does it for me!

the most fattening of all foods
just makes me feel wonderful
it warms my heart and my arteries

once a week, usually on saturdays
is when i allow for this tasty treat
and when they arrive at my table
there is nothing anyone can do to
stop me, i dive right in!

comfort foods are needed at certain
times, as for me it gives me that
extra boost, so well needed at
weeks end, and when every last
"french fry" is gone from my dish
i accomplished what i set out to do

the feeling: satisfying
the taste: delish
the after: bloated

comfort foods, they just make
me smile!

:O)

How in the Heck did I miss that Scrish lost 5 lbs??? Way to go!!!

Sandie: Doing a happy poop dance in honor of LUC!!!!

BarbWa: LOL you would be so pissed if someone jumps in! Glad I got here at the end!

Tinka: I am thinking sign me up for the Owls Hawaii trip! I am dreaming of beaches and warm weather today!

Nowmercy: Man you are a healthy eater. You make me feel guilty!

Hi Iteach!

Zona: I think you partied too much with the working girls last weekend! LMAO

I don't do lent but wish all of you who do good luck!! If I did I would give up Brussel sprouts!

Tinkatia said...

Yes Lent starts tomorrow and then it is only 40 days until Easter. It sure is early this year

Maureen - I am awake and I didn't blow away. It sure is windy though. Would you really consider coming to Hawaii with us next spring break? It would be a hoot to meet K-Girl.
By the way when are you going to start a myspace again? I miss your pretty page.

Dreamatexas - Please blow some of that 86 degree heat our way.

Goldie - No I don't get cranky from giving up chocolate. Only lack of sleep makes me cranky.

I must go make my pancakes and get ready for my computer meeting tonight. I would rather not go but I would like their opinion on the myspace problem I had this week. I also must set my tape for American Idol and House which follows. It's a new one.

Lynn D - I hope you decide to go to Hawaii. That would be great.

Whabbear - Would you and Huz meet us in Hawaii next spring break? (09)

Zonababy - Love and (((hugs))) to you.

goldie said...

lynn honey, you have to give up something you really LIKE- no fair on the brussel sprouts (unless of course they are your favorite food)

scirish said...

Quick post...haven't caught up on the comments yet but I wanted to share..

I went to go vote and both the check in and check out person told me I was the only one on my street to vote...How sad is that??? I feel like knocking on everyones door and screaming..."get involved, this is your future too!" Of course I won't do it...but the economy is going to hell in a handbasket and people are too apathetic to vote?

Sorry for the rant...I just had to vent somewhere!!

Maureen said...

LYNN,
I love, LOVE brussel sprouts. Try roasting them. Yummo!

I had worked in a residential treatment center for kids and we made them thier meals and ate with them. They had to be well rounded and nutritious. Some of these kids never had a fruit or veggie. On the nights we had brussel sprouts, I would push them around my plate and I volunteered to do the dishes so that the kids wouldn't know I never ate mine. A few years ago, I was invited to a friends mom's house for dinner and she made them. Ewww, but I couldn't hurt her feelings and I tried them...WOW! I even asked her if I could take some leftovers home!
Now I LOVE them. If ya ever come over for dinner, I will make you mine and you can try one...or 5 like I did!!

BARB in WA - Congrats at 200!

Tink:

I love how you are bringing this all together. I would be happy to host a "night owl" luau and meet any fellow bloggers that are interested in making the trip here to the islands.

The believe in a previous post you mentioned the month of February....a better time to plan for would be March.

Although our weather is nice, Dec-Feb (early Feb) is our rainy season
and I would want you all to have the best weather possible.

OOH, this would be so much fun to meet you all in person!

Bring on the Pueo's (Hawaiian for owl)!!!!!

Turtle~

Tinkatia said...

K-Girl - Yes I first said Feb but then I thought of spring break (March) when the teachers could come. I am really excited about this. It would be fun if we could get more than a few. We have a year to work on it. It would give us something to look forward to next January and February. There hasn't been much to look forward to this winter.

scirish said...

Thanks guys for all the encouragement on the 5 lbs...It was unexpected and great!!!!

IBB~It's Weight Watchers and I really like it because there are no "forbidden" foods, you just have to watch your points. It has been a good tool for teaching me to eat better. Most days I'll go for the healthy stuff. There are some great recipes so you really don't feel deprived.

Just Lin~I love the online version! There is a "points tracker" that you use to put all your food for the day in and also an "activity tracker" for all sorts of stuff...not just workouts. It is better for me as I don't know if I would be able to make the meetings all the time. There are all sorts of resources too, such as recipe finder, message boards and such.

Zona said...

MAUREEN: No laughing, but how do you roast brussel sprouts--exactly? I like them to begin with, but this sounds interesting and I want to do it right.

LYNND: I was surprised at the effect of the 'flash'...imagine! ;)

BARB/WA: Missed the march--had to feed the pup! And me too as an after thought. Congrats on 200!!

Paul Franson said...

Okay owls ... since I'm having a quiet afternoon, I read most of today's comments and thought of lots of things to say as I was reading but now I'm lost.

Scirish - congrats on the 5lb loss! I'm doing WW at Work and I think I lost 5 pounds for the month of January. I say *think* because I really only pay attention to the weekly counts. They tend to hover in the .5 to 1.5 area. I figure slow loss is better than no loss. My goal is to be a lifetime member like Tinkatia.

Jodi - can I get a teensy bite of that casserole?

Amicus - glad your dad came through surgery okay.

Sandie - so glad Luc pooped out his rock. Is there anything we won't go through for our beloved furbabies?

I've forgotten everything else ... darn this leaky brain of mine, LOL!

So who is going to play Julie the Cruise Director for the owls' trip to the islands? I am SO on board with this!!

Yayyyy!! It's finally time to go home. Next stop, treadmill and then I get to veg out in my big, ugly, but oh-so-comfy easy chair for the evening!

Take care folks. Here's hoping tomorrow will bring another slow day so I can hang out with y'all!!

Hugs,
Caryn

Dianne/Denver said...

Yea for Luc going poop. All that poop talk makes me feel like flying over the nest again....ok, I won't!!

Scirish: congrats on losing 5 pounds. That is a great in a week. Next week if you want to lose one more...Iteach told us to weigh without underwear!!

Dianne/Denver said...

K-girl, I am on my way for some of those pancakes. I always just like the ones at I-Hop during the holidays---pumpkin or carrot cake, but your's sound much better. JODI: Didn't you say you made bananna ones the other day?

BARB: I always loved hamburger gravy over mashed potato too at school. I used to like S... On A Shingle too when I was married to a Army guy that hated it.

Dianne/Denver said...

Tink: We have a place called Gunther Toodies and they serve french fries with gravy and call them Elvis Fries!!

Lynn D said...

Goldie: Damn there is always a catch!!! I fess up I hate brussel sprouts. The smell reminds me of diaper changing days!!!

Mo: If you make me brussel sprouts I hope you have a dog that I can feed them to under the table.

Scrish: I will have to check out the weight watchers online. I tried going to the meetings. That was not my thing. I did not mind the point system tho. Just got lazy.

Hi Dianne: I am waving and ducking at the same time! LOL I hope you are feeling better!

DonnaJean: If you are reading I am thinking about you and Laurie!

I am still reading my book. So I am going to kick back and curl up. Mr. Lynn D is away so I have control of the TV too!

Maureen said...

ZONABABY,
I always try to buy little tender ones. Then I cut them in half, sprits them with olive oil or olive oil pam, and toss them with salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. Throw them on a sheet pan and toss it in the oven. Keep an eye on them and when they carmelize, they are done.

I do that with mushrooms, asparagus, squash, zuchinni, red taters, onions, fresh green beans and cauliflower, too!

WEIGHT WATCHER's is an amazing program. It affords you the freedom to never crave anything, because you can eat everything...in moderation and in appropriate portions.

Sandie said...

Thanks Carol, Lynn D, Caryn and Dianne/Denver! Luc is acting like it never happened!

iteach said to weigh in without your undies??? Shoot, I even take off my nail polish when I weigh in!!

Tinkatia said...

Paul - If I can make it to life-time member of W.W. so can you. I failed 3 times before I finally made my goal. I am determined now after 10 years to never let my weight go 'wild' again. The secret for me was to be reasonable with my 'goal weight'. If you set it too low and you fail, you give up. See your doctor for your best goal weight for your age and build. My second secret for me was never to eat after 6:00. That of course doesn't apply if you are at a party. I used to graze after dinner finding things to eat that I didn't need and really didn't want. I was just bored. I have stopped that.

My meeting was cancelled because of the storm. The wind is very high and the rain is heavy. It's a nice night to be inside. I have watched A. I. and I am taping house. I enjoyed my pancakes with raspberry syrup. Not exactly a dinner, especially not a W.W., one but I enjoyed Fat Tuesday. I think I will wait a while before I make my Hot Cross Buns. It is hard not to over eat them especially when they are warm with frosting.

Tinkatia said...

Dianne - Where do I find Gunther Toodies to get me some Elvis Fries? I bet they are delicious. Do I have to go on a plane to get there?

iteach said...

Hi Everyone!

I am still trying to decide what I am going to do about lent.

I always like to do two things.

1. Do more of something

2. Do less of something.

I need to hurry up and decide what i am going to do.

Anonymous said...

Sandie....yay for Luc!!!

Tinka....must be a Canadian thing...we ate at least once a week that same hamburger and gravy and potatoes that you described. My mom called it Hamburger Hash!

Comfort food...funny, I have been thinking about that a lot lately. My Mom died 24 years ago and she was a great cook but it was fairly traditional fare she cooked up. I am a vegetarian now and sometimes I find that suddenly I am craving certain foods that I wouldn't normally eat now and they are always foods that I loved as a child...peanut butter cookies, tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, apple brown betty (did anyone else call apple crisp that?). When I really look at why I am craving what I am craving, I always find that it is not the food I have been missing, but instead it is my Mom. And making and eating a little taste of the food that I loved and grew up with as a child is the easiest way to keep her close! And true to its moniker, it truly is comfort food.

Sandie said...

I'm so tired, I'm off to bed.

Thank you so much, you wonderful owls, for all your support for me yesterday and today! I'm really sick of talking about poop and I know you all are, too!!

iteach, good luck with your lent decision!

Goodnight. I hope everyone sleeps well tonight.

iteach said...

VIG- Good insight on missing your mom when you are craving those foods. :)

I have a confession to make, I don't like gravy.

Another reason why I am weird.

kahonugrl said...

K outta work, gonna take a ride over the mountians to the lil shack called home.

So glad Amicus Dad is doing well, that Luc dropped the rock, that Paula kitty is doing good, hoping all that are not feeling well feel better, and wishing DonnaJean a flu free year now that her arse has been kicked by it.

be back later, maybe with some sweet corn....bread!

Carol, I have another idea about a blog, but it will take me a couple of days to write it.

I will send it to you by Thursday.

iteach said...

MEK just posted a new blog! Go to Myspace and see it. I am so proud of her. She got an upgrade.

Tinkatia said...

VIg - You are so right. When it comes to comfort food I think it all goes back to a time when we were eating it with our families and we all felt safe. Of course that isn't in every case but I think if you went through the list of comfort foods that were listed today most of them came from our childhood. We called it 'apple brown betty' too and I still make it once in a while for my grandchildren. We always had apple trees so we ate that a lot. More memories.
Speaking of memories I am feeling a little sad tonight because my mom for the past 3 days has managed to get her coat out of the closet, puts it on and waits for someone to take her home. I have spent 3 days trying to convince her that she is home but to no avail. I wish I could get a cot and stay down there with her but of course that is out of the question. Hopefully tomorrow the mood will have past and she will be content to be there. It is such a cozy room and she is surrounded by all her treasures. I have it decorated for Valentine's day. It is just hard to see her not happy.

Hey hooters!

I just read thru the blog comments, wow we all have some great comfort food! Yum.

Sandie, YAY for Luc! SO glad he passed his rock! Good boy!

VIG your post was very sweet and made me get a little teary. I thought it was just beautiful.

JL thank you for the idea of warming up Paula's fluids! I have the bag laying on a heating pad as I type. I hope Paula will find this a little more tolerable tonight.

Thank you to all who continue to wish Paula well, it means a lot to me!

My parrot right now is yelling PARTY PARTY PARTY, don't know what makes him say it or why, but it cracks us up. We wanted him to say it during our Super Bowl party on Sunday, but he was pulling his shy act with so many people he didn't know.

Have a nice evening!

goldie, tell your BIL it doesn't count if he complains about giving it up. He is supposed to abstain in silence! I don't give anything up, but if I did, I would not complain. lol

ZONA, your comment to JustLin was a riot ~ ...."gave me a chill, say it one more time ok"! SO FUNNY

Ah Tinka....special hugs for you and for your Mom. Your Mom is so lucky to have such a caring daughter!!!!

Tinkatia said...

VIG - Thanks for the words about my mom. Mothers are so special. They are such a strength for us when we are growing up. Then the tables turn and we have to be their strength. God love them all.
I am tired and I am off to bed.

Included in my prayers are -
Amicus' Dad that he continues to recover.

Ibebold that she can hold up under all her recent tragedies. We have to get her eyes 'unpuffed'.

Donna Jean, that her flu leaves her and Laurie is on the mend.

All of our friends who have suffered these past weeks with the flu.

All of our little 'fur babies' that have swallowed rocks and need to take Meds.

Anyone lonely or hurting tonight.

God keep my mom safe and content tonight.

See you all in the morning when Lent begins and there is no more chocolate for me until Easter.

Love, Tinka

IBB: I wish I could give you a big hug and make you laugh!

DIANNE: Will you stop just swooping around and land for awhile? Sheesh, I miss you!!

ITEACH: Did you decide what to do less of and what to do more of? You could probably apply them to the same thing--different areas, if you tried! ;)

GRANDMA MOSES: I waited all day too! ;)

TINA: 2.5 hours...

MAUREEN: Thank you so much for the instructions! I think I will try all the things you listed!

EJB- after reading MEK's blog I think she heard your parrot yelling, Party, Party , Party!
Glad Paula is doing better.

ibebold, I am so sorry for your saddness. I know we are not MEK, but we will be here for you..

grandma moses, my BIL doesn't complain about giving up chocolate- he is just so damn cranky when he does. I couldnt' live with him, well actually I couldn't live with him even when he eats chocolate, but I love him anyway.

Vig- we always had apple brown betty when I was growing up. It was different than apple crisp a little bit. As I recall, the recipe my mom made used orange juice in it. And I loved it!

I feel so much better now. Thanks, Birdee, for the well wishes.

Sandie: I have to add my congrats on Luc finally unloading that rock. And LOL @ removing your nail polish before you weigh.

Sandie: Doing a happy dance for you and Luc! Sending lots of belly scratches for him.

Tinka: You always make sure your mom's room is full of love and decorated for the holidays. You're such a great daughter! I hope she's feeling better tomorrow. {{Hugs}} for you both.

SacBarb: Glad you found an outfit for the wedding!

Ibebold: My heart goes out to you and your best friend. That's so much sadness to have to endure in such a short time span. Prayers and hugs for you both.

Another Thank You to everyone I mentioned this morning! Your thoughts, prayers, and hugs have meant a lot to me.

I'd also like to send Hugs and Thank You's to:
Grandma Moses
Ibebold
BonO
Dreama
Maureen
Caryn/Outatuune

My dad is doing great, and if everything looks good in the morning, he should get to come home tomorrow. YAY! :) He's my hero and my rock so when something isn't right with him the rest of my world seems out of sync.

Much love to all you wonderful Owls! This nest is full of kindness and compassion!
