Advice

why is it when someone
asks you for advice, you
freely give it, trying so hard
to be diplomatic, yet honest

listening and listening
as i do, as this is me
so understanding i am
allowing the conversation to flow

and then it happens
they just don't listen
coming back at you
over powering the conversation
defending themselves
disagreeing with all you say

and in the end doing
exactly what you told them
not to do

i just don't get

why ask?

is it just to hear the words
or is it just to be impossible?

no more words from me as
all they want me to do is listen
and so i shall~~

Yahooo!!! Doing the happy dance :D Oh, and I got This Owl Says, too?!!? Oh happy day!!

Good morning Owlettes!! The sun is shining here and we are suppose to reach 50 balmy degrees here - all the better to melt some of this snow!!

CAROL - Great blog. I have a former friend that all she did was dole out advice. She seriously had issues with control - not only with her own life, but everyone else's, too. This is part of the reason we are no longer friends. I try not to give out advice unless it is asked (specifically because of this person). I just don't think I need to be telling someone else what would be best for them - because truth be told, it probably was something that was best for ME.

I hope everyone has a great day!!!

ZONA - Please keep me updated. I hope you kick that headache soon!! Actually, you better not be reading this (cuz the dr. said to stay away from the computer), but when you're feeling better and go back and read the missed blogs, I want you to know how much I miss you - and will say a little prayer for you today. ((((HUGS)))) 2 U!!

Good morning!

Congrats Jodi!

Carol, I think when that type of situation happens, the person asking for advice just wants reassurance and validation.

Probably they have already made up their mind, but just want to know someone else who's opinion is valued agrees with what they think or plan to do.

I will have to think about this to see if I have an example to post.

Will be back later, after work!

Have a great day everyone!

Oh, how could I forget. Welcome to Jennifer! I think you'll like it here! :)

Oh, Carol this blog totally fits with my frustrations at work.

You must have been reading my mind.

However, I am going to concentrate on the beautiful sunny day today and my zipper.

My zipper in my pants will not stay up.

Have you ever had a pair of pants like that?

iteach said...

Yeah, Jodi on being first.!

JoeyfromSC said...

Morning ladies!and whabbear! LMAO

WOW, you describe how I tend to do at times Carol! I can't believe I'm admitting this! I usually KNOW in my heart what I NEED to do, but can hardly ever let my stubborn self do the right thing!:(
I love advice, but seldom seem to do what 5 different people are all telling me TO DO! LOL
Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate advice, but I am just so frickin' hard headed! It's like when I hear what they're telling me to do, suggesting, etc...I KNOW they are RIGHT! What is my problem?lol

My head is not on right!

Hope y'all have a good day...I have not slept well!

JoeyfromSC said...

EBJ: omg you summed up more eloquently how I feel! LOL
Congrats on first Miss "Joey and Jodi have the same peace tee" Jodi! LOL

Good morning feathered friends!

HODI...congrats on 1st and QOTD!

ZONA...I didn't know you were ailing. I wondered where you were yesterday. Get some rest and feel better soon.

JOEY...Sorry you are struggling right now. Hang in there.

EBJ...Good Morning!

ITEACH...Good morning!

CAROL...interesting topic. I can't stand unsolicited advice! I hear it and wanna do the opposite! But if I ask for it, I take it in and really try to decide if it is the right advice for me and if I can actually do it. As far as giving advice, I try to wait until I am asked.
I have a friend that will go on forevah about a problem...ask my advice...then totally disregard it. SO I don't bother...even if asked.

Have a great day!

Sandie said...

Congrats on first, Jodi!

Carol, I agree with east bay j--I think many times the person just wants to be validated.

I am the kind of person who talks out my problem with lots of friends and sometimes end up taking one's advice, merging several friends' advice or taking my own advice. It's never meant to not listen or appreciate their advice, it's just part of my process to do that.

I'm sure you're a great listener,
Carol!

iteach, your zipper won't stay up! Yes, I've had pants like that, too. Annoying!!

Zona, you have a headache? I'm so sorry--feel better soon.

Joey, it takes a big man to admit he's hard-headed!! LOL

Zona--feel better soon...

I must have a face people can talk to... because every where I work it seems I am "Dear Abby"...I give advice when asked for... and when they don't do what I said .. they always come back and say..." Damn Yoyu were right.. I should have listened to you".. I tell them it is just that people have to make their own mistakes .. or they wouldn't learn by them!!!

Sandie said...

Mornin' IBB! I must have the same face because that is forever happening to me, too! My husband teases me all the time because we'll go somewhere and before you know it someone I've never met is telling me their life story. I don't mind as I enjoy listening/talking to people but I get teased about it all the time. I've been known to spend hours on the phone with someone who called our number by mistake. LOL Once I called to cancel my aol account and ended up talking to the rep for over an hour--he told me about his girlfriend, his family, etc. I swear I don't know how it happens!

ibebold said...

Too Funny Sandie...
I get the teasing too....

Good morning,
Yay Jodi for #1

Carol, A really great blog. I think personal advice, or opinions, should be asked for and not offered. If I see someone I care for floundering, I have a tough time not offering my opinion. I've always liked the expression, "My opinion and a $1.00 will get you a cup of coffee."

Waving Good Morning to:

And zona, hope you're feeling better.

I wonder how all the 11 new babies slept last night. Welcome to the world, little ones.

LOL Ronnie!!!

JoeyfromSC said...

LOL@Sandie! I do the same thing..I can be on a business call and if the person is talkative already and friendly, it's amazing the conversations I can get into with perfect strangers! LOL

I remember a lady at the cable company in SC talked to me about her family, job, etc. haha
Fun times!
Hey, it beats the A-holes you get 99% of the time! I really love when I get a hot sounding guy! OMG, I always chicken out and wished I would've hit on them haha..Well, I do but am very subtle:)

goldie said...

Good morning hooters! Congrats Jodi on 1st and saying of the day!

I am careful with advice. I always try to preface it with "in my opinion, or if it was me" I never want to say "if I was you, or you should". And I really try to NEVER give advice, even if asked, about relationships. That will come back and bite you in the ass for sure. Sure as shit you say something that sounds negative and they resolve it and you are the bad guy.

I do agree that most people who ask just want validation for what they all ready have decided.
Now that all being said- I freely give my opinion and advice if ASKED to my kids. They are no immune to being asked "have you lost your frigging mind?"!

Hope you all have a great day. I am all alone in my office today- so popcorn will be popping and the radio is on high!

JoeyfromSC said...

Hey Goldie! Your default looks like "CruOWLA Deville"! LMAO

Jennifer said...

Morning all! (iteach...don't tell on me and I won't tell on you...about "blogging" on work time)! ; )

I have to agree with ebj, joey, and Sandie, that sometimes people just need to talk things out loud (and to someone). I never become offended if someone doesn't take my advice. If it helps them through the "process" (as Sandie said) then I am glad to have been there. I do think that when people ask for "advice" they may already have an idea on what to do and may just need to be "validated" (as ebj said). Perhaps they are looking for someone to agree with their idea of what to do? Besides, isn't "advice" more of an "opinion" anyway? I would just feel "honored" that someone values you enough to ask (whether or not they listen to you). I do agree it can be frustrating when it's more of an obvious situation. But like IBB said, people need to learn from their own mistakes (and maybe next time they WILL listen)!

Does that make sense? Sometimes I tend to drone on and on and I'm not sure if I make sense... ; )

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning and thanks for the thought provoking blog Carol.

Jodi - Good Morning, lst on the blog and the first message I read on myspace. Thanks for the kind words.

Happy Morning to East Bay J, iteach, Joey, Maureen, Sandie, Ibebold and Ronnie. Did Carol get you thinking so early this morning? I don't get asked for advice often. My youngest daughter always asks me what she should do but after 37 years I have learned that my answer had better be what she wants to hear. I usually just do a lot of listening and agreeing with her. I guess I am her "sounding off board". My oldest daughter has a mother-in-law who constantly gives unasked for advice to anyone she talks to. I think my daughter and I will get extra jewels in our crown in heaven for 'biting out tongues' constantly. I don't think there is anything more annoying than 'unasked for advice'.

RonnieGirl said...

Waving Hi to Goldie and Joey,

Just a little tid-bit...
I have a family member that thinks she knows everything, so she always is offering unsolicited advice and opinions. I just say thanks and walk away. I hate that.

I decided a long time ago, our family doesn't need an encyclopedia set, we have Ally!

Good morning Tink and Jennifer!!

Hope you are having a good day.

Good Morning Goldie - I love your expression, "Have you lost your friggin mind"? It gave me my first smile of the day.

Jennifer - I enjoyed our many messages back and forth last evening. I feel like I know you already. You are a great addition to the nest.

It is still early here so I am waiting to hear how my daughter's arm feels now and how long the pain block lasts.

I am also waiting to hear how my cyber daughter Zona is today. Fine I hope.

Lynn D said...

Good Morning Owls!

Bono: Congrats on the pitter patter of all of those puppy feet!!

Jennifer: Welcome to the nest!!!

Tinka: So glad to hear your daughter is doing well after her surgery!

Scirish: Saying prayers for your friend. I am so sorry you are hurting sending (((Hugs))).

I know I am forgetting something here and I apologize. I thought I would be able to catch up yesterday when I got home. But what I thought was allergies is a full blown head cold!!!

I told Mr. Lynn D that I have had the bronchcial crap and now the head cold. The only thing left is the nether regions and I just want to say if my Hoo Hoo gets a cold someone just shoot me and start singing way over yonder!!

Carol interesting blog. I try to let people use me as a sounding board, but if it is something that I just can't bite my tongue about I have been known to question their sanity in very strong language. Doesn't happen very often but if I don't speak up it will wear at me like a blister that gets bigger and bigger.

I will try to keep up with you guys in between sneezes. Hope everyone is having a great day!

None of them listened to me!

LOl at Joey and Whabbear.

Tink- glad I made you smile. The funny thing is (and I swear on my grandaughters little head this is true)- my son just called me to ask me my opinion on something- and I kid you not- I said "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FRIGGING MIND????"
He said, "geez, tell me what you think Mom". But then he said that is why he called me, because he knows I am going to tell him just what I think because I was asked!

Zona and Lynn- hope you feel better. Lynn- I will say a little Hoo Hoo prayer for you.

Tinkatia said...

Lynn - I am sorry you have a cold. Drink lots and curl up in bed with a good movie. If that is impossible then take echanachia.

Whabbear - Sweetie, That is not true. I take everything you say as the bible truth. I do everything you tell me to do - well almost everything.

Jodi said...

LOL @ LYNN D calling her cooch a Hoo Hoo!!! Make sure to cross those legs when you sneeze!!!! Oh, and I just made a fresh cup of hot green tea for you!!! I swear that is the only thing that has gotten me thru this winter that refuses to end.

JOEY-MY-BOY-WITH-THE-FLY-PEACE-T!!!! LOL @ "CruOWLa Deville! When LOVEY first made that pic I called her GOLDIE OWLIECOW!!!

WHABBY - Sometimes I think you are the sole voice of reason here - so I do value what you have to say. Other times - I just enjoy your sly sense of humor!!! BTW how is HUZ's hand?

Jodi said...

GOLDIE - Can just picture you doing the happy dance with your tunes cranked up!!! While the cat's away.......LOL!!

Lynn D said...

Whabbear you offered advice to me? Sorry my ears are plugged from this damn cold and I guess I didn't hear you!

Tinka: I will be drinking hot beverages and and dragging my hindend around today but will be napping in between.

Goldie: Thank you for saying a prayer for my Hoo Hoo! It can use all the help it can get!

Jodi Hodi: Thank you for the hot tea. The legs are crossed but I sure get funny looks when I try to walk that way! LMAO Oh and congrats on 1st!!!

Carol Thank you for the blog and the TOTD.

Jodi Woo Hoo! You got a twofer today. Congrats on #1 and on Owl Says.

Whabbear Thank you for the advise.

LynnD If your Hoo Hoo starts sneezing, we will have to alert the media. LOL I hope you feel better soon.

Please don't let me get sick just in time for the big Custard meet! That would really suck, and not in a good way.

I try to stay out of the advise giving business. I might give my opinion if pressed or say what I would do for myself. If someone is really obviously screwing up, I do have to speak up. It depends, too, on what kind of relationship I have with that person.

Glynis said...

Good Morning Owls...
I am so overwhelmed with my job today. I want to call and tell them I am not available until next Monday, but my job isn't that sort of job.

The ironic thing: my job involves giving advice! There is one issue I am dealing with right now and all the advice is going in one ear and out the other. I spent WAY too much time on the phone yesterday and at 8:30 this morning it started ringing again.

Carol, I honestly believe that people will ask and ask and keep asking for advice until someone says what they are hoping to hear!It must stem from childhood, where a child will ask mom for something and when she says no... they go to dad. And then to Grandma. Until they find someone who says yes.

OK, I need to go back to work and dealing with these people's problems. And offering advice that they will not hear.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Hi everyone. Advice is tricky. If I give it I worry if it was the right advice. If I except it I worry that I will disappoint the person who gave it to me. I don't think this was the response you were looking for Carol. Sorry.

Sorry I haven't been very supportive to you all lately. I'll leave some tylenol, kleenex and a large pooper scooper for the puppies. ((HUGS))

Tinkatia said...

Shirley - So happy to see you posting. I do the same thing. I worry about the fact that maybe I gave the wrong advice. As you say it is a tricky thing. Some people are good at it. I am not. I don't think I will ever be called

Hi Shirley,
I tried to sing you a happy song last night. Sorry that I didn't know all of the words but it's the thought that counts!!

RonnieGirl said...

Good morning, Dreama, Glynis, Goldie and Shirley.

Glynis, I agree, it probably does all come from childhood. I embroidered a small picture for my kitchen that reads "If all else fails, ask Grandma", and one of them does.

Dreama, No we didn't go there this trip, we stayed at the house. I'm only 50 mile from Galveston and we go there and Seabrook for dinner quite often. After Easter, I'll be spending a week in Rockport, which is my most favorite place of all on the Texas coast.

Shirley, As smart as you are, I would think your advice would be taken with opened arms. Love the gift of the pooper-scooper you left for the furbaby nursery.

I'm having big problems with myspace, is anyone else?

Jennifer said...

OK...I'm a "newbe" here...what is "This Owl Says" thing about? (I get the being "first" thing...I bow down to you all as I am NOT a morning person so I doubt I'll ever be first)! ; )

RonnieGirl said...

Tooo easy! #50.

Tinkatia said...

Dreama - I knew you would be the one to pick up on that funny mistake. You are a hoot.LOL

Ronnie - Myspace is fine but I am finding it slow to get on the Night Owl site lately. I never had that trouble before. Am I the only one?

RonnieGirl said...

Jennifer,

When someone says something that's usually of the nasty flavor, they get nominated for This Owl Says.

I love the fact you admit you're not a morning person.

Ronnie

Tinkatia said...

Jennifer - The funny thing about being first is the fact that it is quite often a Night Owl who has not been to bed yet. To be first on the West coast you really have to be up early.
I must get some work down. It is almost time for lunch and a nap and I have been playing on the computer all morning. Retirement - ah it's a hard life.

RonnieGirl said...

Tink,
I'm okay here, but myspace is soooo slow and acts like i'm on dial-up or something. I defragmented twice yesterday and it's didn't help.

You said you were doing you Easter decorating, me to, but not too much this year.

And i was talking with Teacher, Tink! OMG Sorry, Tink.

kahonugrl said...

Tink: You think thw West Coasters have it bad, how about us in the middle of the ocean?? I got a 3rd when I was on my trip, that's the closest Ill ever be to first....lol

Tinkatia said...

Ronnie, Since I made the biggest typo error of the day I resign from my teacher position. Who ever heard of 'biting out tongues'? Only Dreama that's who.
Myspace is always having troubles lately. Maybe we are too hot to handle.
I wish Easter was always in April. Then I can decorate for St. Patty in March and Easter for April. They are almost over lapping this year.
Slim Fast and Nap Time - Be back later.

Tinka, so glad to see you today--I hope your daughter is much better.

Ronnie, the next time my kids have a project I'll ask you to look it up in the ally . . .

Hey Whabbear! I always take your advice! After all, you can read the stars . . .

Lynn D, I am so sorry you're sick again! That stinks.

Glynis, I hope your day gets better!

Dreama, my own hotline! That's funny! Wouldn't it be nice to really make money just rambling my opinions? HA!

just_lin, keep washing those hands! You can't get sick!

Goldie, you reminded me of when we went to a Rain Forest Cafe when my daughter was about two. The thunderstorm sound came on and she screamed and threw herself on the ground like we were being attacked! I felt so bad for her but it was kind of funny!

I have advice to give the Blogspot, but I can't do it without 4 letter words LOL. I finally made my way back here!

I have had a couple of days of limited computer time. I had a sore hiney from falling (better than sick hoo hoo LOL!!), also my Aux. Pres. didn't take my advice to get her flu shot, and has gotten very sick, so I have to do some running for her. The one shot would have saved her the 6 shots, 3 Dr. bills she has gotten so far!

Jodi~ First & second!! Must be you survived your Birthday.

Carol, I try not to give advice that can come back & haunt me! A long time ago A friend asked me what I thought of a young man his daughter was seeing. Well, I had first hand knowledge of a lot of his deeds, some from his own Mother. I told him that this young man would be the last person I would want MY daughter to marry.
Guess what, they got married. Thank goodness he doesn't mention it! His now SIL is a great Husband & Father . He is still on the rowdy side and heavy drinker.but they seem to manage.

And I've had so many smiles looking at the great multi-pup photo comments y'all sent. SHIRLEY, can you imagine the workout that pooper-scooper will get? I love it when you swoop into the nest and make me smile and laugh. Daughter was obviously up all night and says today she feels like she's running a laundromat! I have new pictures from today. Will try to get some up soon.

BEAR~~For the life of me, I can't remember what advice you gave so many of us. If it was 'blanket advice' I must have been hiding under the blanket ;o) at the time....or worse yet, under the bed! Please repeat, as I know it must have been good!

I have been in a witchy mood today.

But you know what that mood is gone.

You know why?

I just had a conference with my new student's mom.

My new student has not been in school since September. They have been in hiding in fear of "boyfriend" who did abusive things that I cannot print.

My new little student has exactly only one pair of pants and one shirt. She only owns the clothes that are on her back. They ran from the state of Ohio.

I have no idea how long she will stay with me, but I will just love her as best as I can until she leaves.

I got on Myspace just fine a moment ago. Maybe you need to delete all of your cookies and help it run faster unless you got phished. Typically hackers just mess with SPAM but don't change your password. I hope you resolve it.

Well, I'm off to read--I'm almost finished with a really good Maeve Binchy book called Light a Penny Candle. She's such an awesome author.

I had fun listening to all of your advice about advice!

Goodnight owls--sleep well.

Jodi & iteach: I would LOVE to get in on your "get together"! Can I, huh...huh???

Kgirl: I hope you didn't take "offense" to my crabby "sunny day" comment! I don't like to be hot or in the sun! I really do get serious head-aches on sunny days (as well as cranky)! I feel energized and happy when it is gray out (I KNOW it's weird...but I have met a couple people like me). Perhaps I lived in western Europe (like England or Scotland) in a previous life??? Does anyone else here relate???

kahonugrl said...

No offense taken. Hey there are plenty of shady places, overcast even. Ill just stick you up in the mountian where it rains and your head will be in the clouds....... HEADACHE FREE"

I am off to bed to watch the last two episodes of season two's GW. After that I will be in withdrawal mode.
Good Night everyone. Stay safe.

I don't like bright sunny days. It hurts my eyes and gives me headaches.I enjoy cloudy days. Many people get depressed with gray skies, but not me. I also dislike hot days. I don't perspire enough and hot days can cause me to pass out or feel nauseated.

DreamaTexas said...

Tinka
enjoy GW. I missed Lost tonight, but I am getting lost watching Lost with all of the twists and turns.

don't go too fast while on that Nyquil. I fell and messed my elbow up and it still hasn't healed.

Hi everyone.
Just a quick fly by to thank everyone who has left messages and comments of support on my myspace page. It has been quite overwhelming. I am trying to step back and see what you see but the picture is a bit fuzzy.
I'll leave some more kleenex and tylenol for those who need them. ((HUGS)) for everyone. Thank you.

k off to home....try to get back on laters....

TinaHO, JodiHO, and MO....lol

you three know the digits.

"Lost" was good, I cried.

Dreama: Isn't it sunny in Texas? It's nice to know someone else who appreciates a nice cloudy day (and NO I am not a "goth" or "vampire" either)! I have been this way my whole life! I even wear shades on cloudy days (due to the glare)!

Shirley: Hang in there...it will come into focus...you just have to look at it longer! Also...don't be afraid of meds. I have to take Paxil for Anxiety. There is NOTHING to be ashamed in taking medication to help you cope!

Bon'O said...

Hi Shirley....don't be gone long!
p.s. stop by MySpace and hug a pup! I just got 3 new videos of them today. As I was just telling Tink by mail, 1 day-old puppies are like 1-day old humans....adorable in motion, but not very photogenic!

Thanks Sandie, MaryMi, Jodi and LynnD for responding to the 'Adopt-A-Class idea. Jennifer (iTeach) had a meeting tonight, but got back to me right away saying she loved the idea. God knows we love HER and what she does for the kids.

iteach said...

Bonnie, after I pick up the house, I have to check out your videos.

I have been so busy lately that I forgot about the puppies.

I can't wait to see them.

Bon'O said...

ITEACH~~Haven't mastered uploading the FlipVideos to MySpace yet, so right now there are just a couple not-so-great photos. They'll get more photogenic soon, once they stop trampling over each other to get 'dinner'. One of the 2 golden males is definitely out to prove he's the 'Alpha' dog.

iteach said...

They are so beautiful Bonnie!

Oh, man I really need to be cleaning!

Hey everyone. I just got home from seeing "The 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and I loved it. They chose 4 members from the audience to join the cast for the first part of the show and it was a hoot.

Jodi: glad to see you survived your birthday and you were last and first and got QOTD too. Wow!

Ronnie: Where do you get a cup of coffee for $l.00? I have been having problems with MySpace too. I couldn't even get logged in on Tuesday.

Tinka: I'm gld to hear that your daughter is doing well. I will keep her on my prayer list. Thanks for the pretty comment you sent me today.

Bear: I'm sure I listened to your advice....

Lynn D: Sorry you are sick again, but take care of that Hoo Hoo.

Bon: That is a great idea to adopt iteach's class. Count me in.

Zona: you better not be reading this!

I give advice only when I am asked and I don't check to see if it has been followed. I agree with those who said people usually just want validation, so I figure they are going to do what they want anyway. I do have one son who asks me for advice and usually follows it, he tells me. The other two sons NEVER ask me for advice and I don't offer it.
