A Step Back In Time

IT IS POSSIBLE TO REMEMBER THE 60's~~
EVEN IF YOU DID EAT THE BROWNIES!!

A Step Back In Time

by Bon'Oregon

Since we all seem to be nostalgic for the GOOD OLD DAYS (whatever days those may be for each of us), I thought it might be fun to hear what, if anything, you remember or were told of that most eventful era, the '60's. Were you "at Woodstock"? ~~ Wasn't everyone? Were you told about The Sixties by your parents? Do you remember them with fondness or sadness? Where did you live? Has much changed there since? Do you still have trash or treasures from that era?

Here's a wonderful link with almost 10 minutes of 60's memories to get you thinking. Grab a beverage, turn up the volume and ENJOY a step back in time.......

Good Morning Scirish = You are first again. You are really an early owl.

Thanks for the blog Bon O.
I knew absolutely nothing about Woodstock except that there were a lot of happy people. I heard there were drugs involved but not violence. I will feed my babies and check out that site. I think I will learn from that. Be Back soon.

I was a child in the 60's so no Woodstock for me and no brownies until the 70's.

Hope everyon has a good day. I have pics of Jodi and I at lunch yesterday on myspace.

My damn IPS is really causing havoc - so hope I get to come back again today...

As I have mentioned before I was born in 1969, so I don't remember the 60's! However, I really enjoyed the mini-movie. My parents never really shared too many memories about the 60's (more about the 50's). However, my best friend is 53 and she often shares stories and memories from the 60's (at least the ones she can remember)! LOL!!! I do love hearing her stories!

I will be looking forward to reading all of your stories as well!

Great post Bon'o!

BTW...congrats on being first, scirish!

Morning to Tink, Lynn d, Goldie, and Shirley! Thanks for another great breakfast Shirley!

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Shirley - Thanks once more for breakfast. I would like boiled eggs, softly boiled please and an English muffin. I love English muffins with real butter and marmalade. You are a sweetheart. I smiled when I read "I don't remember the 60's". So many comedians use that line because they were drugged out in the 60's but you were an innocent baby.

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Jennifer - I hope you have a nice weekend. Keep busy. Have fun. I will message you later.

Now I have my orange juice and Shirley's breakfast (Thank you), I will check out that mini movie.

Tinkatia said...

Wow! Bon O - That mini movie was fantastic. I will watch it a couple more times today. The 60's started out so innocently and ended up in turmoil. It is sad to watch the innocence disappear. Up until President Kennedy was killed it was more like the 50's. Everyone felt so safe and optimistic. To watch the decade condensed to 10 minutes is an eye opener.
The 60's for me was a wonderful decade. I was married, moved into a brand new house, new car (65 Ford Galaxy) had my children in '65, '68 and '70. I was teaching part-time and loving it. My sister had 3 children in that decade, (earlier than I did) so I had 2 lovely nieces and l nephew.
In 1968 we got one of those combination stereo, record player and coloured T.V. that was pictured in the mini movie. The day we purchased the colour T.V. was a big day. It was a warm sunny June afternoon, a day when we would usually be out in the garden. That day we closed the drapes and watched T.V. all day long just because it was in colour.
My daughter was a year old when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. I woke her up and sat her with me in front of the T.V. so that I could write in her baby book that she watched the first man to walk on the moon. (It was a very fuzzy picture). She will be 40 this year and there hasn't been much change in moon walking since. I think the 60's were the happiest decade in my adult life. Thanks for the memories Bon O.

I am alone in the nest once more. I will check back when others have arrived. Have a great day everyone.

Barbara_in_COviaWA said...

I love that line in Field of Dreams where she says "No. You had to 50's and moved right on to the 70's."

Well.....let's see....I was born in 64' so most of my 60's were spent in diapers and then learning how to talk, walk, write my name, share my toys, be quiet during quiet time....etc. etc. etc. So Kinda boring.

Congrats on 1st scirish!

scirish said...

ok...I am assembled and ready for the day...

I don't remember much of the 60's either. I was on the cusp age-wise. I lived in a college town in PA during that time and remember many of the students protesting The war. I also remember hearing a lot about Woodstock and wished that I had been old enough to go. Several years later (early 70's) I went to Watkins Glen, NY (unbeknownst to my parents) for a similar event and had the time of my life.

Great blog...
I feel I was born 10 years to late...
I would have loved to have been at woodstock...
I was born in 1960... so I remember the later years pretty well... I do know that we moved to Colo Springs in 1962.....Academy Blvd. was a 2 lane dirt road from Templeton Gap to the Air Force Academy.. it is now (was in the 80's)..A six lane super highway... that if you don't fly you get run over... I remeber looking at the horse pastures on the way to church ... now it is all strip malls and housing...

Good Morning Owls. It is freaking snowing here again. Enough already!

I was born in Dec. 1965, so I personally do not remember the 60's. However, I love the music from that time. Just this week, my daughter asked me if I had ever heard of anyone called The Beatles. I practically spewed coffee all over the car. OF COURSE I know the Beatles!! I came home and showed her the long list of Beatles songs I have on my iPod... and then asked her to listen to my favorite Beatles song, "Let It Be". You know what she told me? "No Mom, that's by the Jonah's Brothers." WHAT???? We went back and forth and then I told her "not only did the Beatles sing it first... they wrote the song!"

"oh."

I can remember when I was a teen and going on about how cool it must have been to live in the 50's and 60's (based on my Happy Days knowledge) my parents reminded me that it wasn't all fun and games... it was a time of war and protest.

I wish we had more protest now a days. It seems like we have lost our voice and not as many scream out about social unjustice. Or it doesn't make the evening news.

Welcome to the Nest, Gardenergirl!

Congrats on first and second, Scirish!

BonO...well done! Fabulous topic! How great it is to think back to a time that has some very strong memories attached to it. And that movie was great!

I was born in 1959 so the 60's were my growing up years. Where I grew up in Canada, we had four channels and three of them were from the US so my awareness and remembrance of what was happening there is stronger than what was happening in Canada at the same time. My Dad watched Walter Cronkite every night before dinner. I was four years old and I remember the radio being on and my Mom's stunned reaction when she heard that President Kennedy had been shot. I remember being allowed to stay up to watch Ed Sullivan when the Beatles were on. I remember it was my 10th birthday and my first pyjama party and my brothers were glued to the radio and t.v, to hear what was happening on that muddy farm in Woodstock, New York. I remember how they went nuts to buy the Woodstock album when it came out. I remember staring at the moon when the astronaut walked on it and wishing I could see that. (well, actually I think I got my binoculars out trying to see it...okay, I wasn't the smartest crayon in the box!) Oh those were the days my friends..we thought they'd never end, la la la la.....

Jennifer said...

Glynis: You are so right that we seemed to have lost our "voice"! It is sad that protests of any kind now are just a joke.

I am happy to see lots of people in the nest now. I always seem to 'hit' the in between times.

Ibebold -I am glad your friend Alice is getting good news. I pray it keeps up. I am going to watch the video again too. I love the Elvis part.

Glynis - You were born 3 months after my son. My goodness you are so young and yet your daughter sees you as being from 'the olden days'. I guess time marches on. I still think of my son as being a boy.
The 60's were full of war and protests but I know in Canada the 50's were a pretty innocent time. No-one locked their doors. We played outside from morning til night coming home only for meals. We would sleep outside in tents in the summer. I loved the 50's.

VIG - You are so right. We knew so much about the States and so little about Canada. I was in University before I knew much about Canadian history.
Have fun saving the trees. I wish I could be with you.

Jennifer - It was fun 'talking' to you this morning. ((((Hugs))))
back at you.

Ahhh, the 60's! I was born in 58, so, like TN-VIG, came of age in the decade. The personal memories are all of growing up in a small town on Georgian Bay, Thornbury by name. We moved from there to Toronto in the fall of 1969.

I remember there were some older kids from Thornbury who got into the hippy movement, and they were the talk of the town! One, named Brian Stewart, got the nickname "Hippy Stewart" (he later went back to school and got an engineering degree).

My cousin, Cathy, was at the University of Toronto in the late 60's, and she used to tell me about the big changes on campus, smoking pot, forcing the administration to allow co-ed dormitories, and the like. I was fascinated!

Those are some of the 60's memories. But, there's no doubt that the 60's also had a tremendous impact on my entire life.

How so, you ask? Well, as most of you know, I'm a NASA scientist who also likes to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, smoke pot, party, and reap the benefits of the 60's sexual revolution by living as an openly gay man.

Talk about two very different set of influences from the 60's! I read a very interesting article several years ago where the author compared the two big events in the summer of 69, Apollo 11 and Woodstock. His point was that Woodstock was the antithesis of Apollo, the one being the product of laziness and sloth, the other the product of hard work, committment, and dedication.

I resonate to the philosophy of the hippies, peace and love and sex and drugs and rock and roll. There's a good chance I would have been a hippie, if I'd been about 10 years older. But, at the same time, I've dedicated most of my professional life to advancing the goals of that Apollo program, with all the work and dedication that such a job entails.

So, I guess, when it comes right down to it, I'm a walking example that Apollo 11 and Woodstock were NOT as mutually exclusive as that author argued. They CAN be synthesized! LOL!

SacBarb - she paid to use a computer to get caught up on the blog and answer myspace messages and the computer that she is using has the blog and myspace BLOCKED - needless to say - she is NOT a happy camper right now.. she said they should have a sign posted telling you that those sights are blocked BEFORE you swipe your credit card!!! (poor thing) - they hope to find a cyper cafe soon..

She is having a great time and asked to tell everyone HELLO!!

SO - she is waving hello....

they are on the big island today and are going to see a volcano - it has lava flowing and Sharon has never seen that.

She misses us all!!!!!!!!

From A51:

All right, Gardenergirl! Welcome to the ranks of the Owls!!

scirish: Sorry I didn't post yesterday... I had to drive up to San Francisco right after work to attend Huz's annual employee dinner (he works for the city of Daly City, right next door to Just Lin in Pacifica).

But, sadly, I don't have any arts and craftsy-type ability whatsoever! None! Zilch! :(

whabbear said...

MEK... OMG... there's an article in today's SF chronicle about the current conditions at Kiluaea (sp?) volcano. Sounds like Sharon's going to have an amazing experience!

On a trip to the Big Island over 10 years ago, we walked for over a mile on a frozen lava field, at night, in light rain, to watch magma flowing out of a tube (like water from a fire hose) and emptying right into the ocean.

That was an absolutely surreal experience! I wonder if Barb and Sharon will be able to do it?

Tinkatia said...

Mek - Hi, I am loving my T.V. I didn't see that dateline special. I guess I missed something good.

Whabbear - Loved your post. Maybe it's a good thing you weren't 10 years older. You got to benefit from the revolution but you weren't involved in it. Your brain might not be as sharp as it is today if you were in the middle of LSD period of time. I think we lost a lot of brilliant people because they did not know the risk of drugs. It took a few years before the risk became evident. I can think of at least 10 besides Janis Joplin who became tragedies of the time.
I think I will watch the video again. That was fun. Have a good afternoon everyone. I will be back in a few hours.

Wow good to see so many up and at'em this morning (afternoon here)

Shirley, Great breakfast today. Brunch for me lol!

Scirish~ The same thing happened to my messages yesterday.

Tinka, I love Marmalade. I just bought a new jar yesterday.

BonO~ Alas I was a child of the 50s,60s,70s,.... I was post Elvis.

I have experience tie dye, madras,go-go boots, whacky tobacky, cancans, saddle shoes, the twist, the boogaloo, bunny hop, hitch hiker, jerk, rock & roll. I was in the 9th grade in Latin class when Kennedy was assassinated. We went to church on a reg. basis, never locked our doors. We lived in town and freely walked the streets at night. Gangs were unheard of there. I spent a lot of time at our soda shop drinking cherry phosphate w/coke. Our drugstore had a soda fountain. We had huge bonfires before Home coming games. Those nights were magic! And one more thing. I remember wearing my "steady" boyfriends class ring with angora wrapped around it to make it fit. AAAH the memories keep flooding back! Sorry for the novel!

whabbear said...

Tink: I think you're absolutely right! The 60's revolution had such a down side, much of it involving drug use. I wish all those artists had had more of an anchor in their lives, something to pull them back from the excesses of the period.

Mary: Please! More memories! More!

Ahhh the good 'ole days! Things were much more simple then and people weren't so mean!
(Think The Andy Griffith Show)
Our family LOVED this show growing up and still does to this day!

Good afternoon everyone.

IBB- so glad you are back, and that your friend is better. Hugs to you- I missed you.

MEK- I watched it last night. I think the thing that struck me was how the power of suggestion can overtake other things. They thought it was their daughter. A part of me still doesn't understand how you don't know your childs face, or scars or birthmarks. But I GET how they wanted it to be so they accepted things they wouldn't if thinking clearly. Powerful stuff and so happy they are still in contact and friends.

Tink- glad you got a new TV and are enjoying it.

Waving back to Sacbarb(thanks MEK)

Heading off to take Pepper for walk in the sunshine and then off we go to Mom's birthday dinner at my Bro's. Hour drive there, and have to take her present and set it up on her patio.

Have a great afternoon and evening folks!

Hi Owls! Mid-day here and no snow yet, but it's in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow, with lows in the upper 20's. The latest we've EVER had snow before was March 22 in 1962!

Speaking of the 60's...I really enjoy reading the recollections of those who've swooped in with their memories so far today. I submitted this blog to Carol last Friday or Saturday, suggesting it might be best for a lazy weekend day. Then I remembered that many of our Baby Boomer Owls who would have the MOST interesting stories were going to be away (RonnieGirl, JustLin, SacBarb, etc.). So, many, many thanks to you~~and I hope to see more of your personal memories...or hear the (sugar-coated) version you got from your parents! It certainly was an eventful decade of innocence and decadence, jubilation and tragedy. I'll try to get back later today to (as K'girl would say) 'talk story' about my own memories.

Goldie~~Did you notice 'your' brownies in the upper right corner of the Blog Photo? :o)

AND, yes~~Mary/MI, Whab, MEK, Tinka, etc. I'm sure you've only scratched the surface. Do tell MORE!

Just another reminder to GO DARK for EARTH HOUR tonight, 8pm local time.

Oh Bonnie, Bonnie, Bonnie!!!

Honey, you are talking "My Generation" (song by The Who, from 1965)!!

I was born way before all of you little babies out there! So the
60's to me were my formative years, my high school years, graduating class of 68', Summer of Love, either in Woodstock, (which I did not attend), San Francisco, or LA, which is where I grew up.

My experiences varied. At times I was a "Surfer Girl", (ie Beach Boys) hung out at the beach all the time, Santa Monica/Venice mostly, but of course Huntington Beach and Newport too.

Then came the times of "experimenting" with pot, reds, whites, LSD, and a few other un-named substances!!

Griffith Park In Los Angeles was THE place to be in the late 60's. Love-Ins by the Carousel, tambourines, Love Beads, Long Hair, leather fringed jackets and purses, meeting people you didn't know and actually going to their places to "crash" and not being molested or murdered!!! Boy was I lucky! It really ws the "Summer of Love"

It was also "The Summer DonnaJean got Arrested"!

Since Bon'O saved me the embarrassment of having to write a whole Blog about it, I'll give you the short/medium version of it! While funny now, it wasn't so funny back then!

It all started out so innocently! My frind Cindi and I wanted to go to the Rose Bowl for a huge concert, where there was going to be about 50-100 thousand people. The Rose Bowl can hold alot of people!

Bands, every one of the legends where going to play. The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream Big Brother and The Holding Company. So many wonderful Bands!

Since we didn't live very far from Pasadena, we took the bus, and figured out that we would either hitch-hike home if it got too late, or take the bus back. Neither of us drove at the time.

So we got dressed up in our "finest" Hippie attire. Cindi's favorite look was that of an Indian Princess! She had very dark complexion, long hair, and was very pretty. So, she put her hair in braids with beads, had some sort of "leather type dress" and sandals. And of course the requiste head band, worn around the forehead!

Me, I just put on some bell bottom jeans fringed with some furry little beady type things, funky looking blouse, left my hair long and straight, though I did also wear the head band, Love Beads and sandals. We looked quite cute, we thought!

So off we went, with very little money, but of course our little "stash" of some pot and reds. (reds are sedatives, but they gave us a high, go figure)

Once there it was CRAZY. People were smoking everywhere, jugs of Red Mountain wine passed around to whomever wanted, pills, pot everything imaginable was there for the taking, and sharing. Some money passed hands, but not much.
Music, drugs, love. That was what is was all about, Man!! PEACE! MAKE LOVE NOT WAR!

Sometime near evening, and the time for the event to end I lost Cindi! I was scared. I think the wine and pills finally got to me! No more was it fun fun fun, but help, help, help!!

So a couple of guys decided to "help" me get myself home. Yeah, right.

As we were leaving the Rose Bowl a couple of police cars pulled up and stopped us. Of course I was so very stoned I was mostly incoherent, and the Police, figured out what was happening pretty quickly.

So, they put me into the Patrol Car and took me to the City Of Pasadena Police Station, where they booked me for being under the influence of drugs & alcohol. Thank Goodnes I did not have anything in my possession! I have no idea what happened to those guys.

It was quite scary. And ladies, get this, it was also "my time of the month", and that was not a good time to be locked up, if you know what I mean.

By morning, I was finally able to tell them who I was, (somehow my purse was no where to be found) and they called my beloved Uncle Jim. I begged them not to call my father. I have mentioned my relationship with him in earlier posts.

Uncle Jim came and rescued me! I was quite a mess. Still very high, dirty, etc. He took me home, didn't judge me, but told me that he had told my father what happened. I was so scared. But, for once in my life, my Dad actually came through for me. Since I had just recently turned 18by one month, I was going to be tried as an adult. But, my Dad happened to know a lot of cops. How, I'm not sure, but they were able to reduce the case back to juvenile court, and besides a very stern speech from the judge, my case was locked up or frozen or whatever they call it!

And my Dad, Grandmother and Uncle, never mentioned it again! They were so loving to me. I will always appreciate that. I think they knew that some Guardian Angel told those Policemen to stop these kids and check out what was happening. Who knows what would have occurred had I gone off with them.

Yes, I still smoked pot, and took pills, but not to the extent I did that day, and eventually by 1970, I met my wonderful husband and was married and my drug taking days were over!

So, except for that horrible day at the Rose Bowl in the Summer of 1968, the 60's were alot of fun!

High School was OK, I wasn't a cheerleader or anything like that, but I met lots of wonderful people, had lots of fun at the beach, etc.

So, now you all know the story of DonnaJean's Arrest!!

I have told this story to my kids, just to show them the scariness of drugs and alcohol. My middle daughter had to experiment for herself though, and had some rough times. But now, after rehab she is 5 years sober, is married to a wonderful man and has a beautiful baby girl.

So sorry this post was so long, and if a few of you fell asleep during the reading, I don't blame you!

Oh, and for Cindi, that girl was alot smarter than me! She didn't get quite so "high" as I did, and took a bus home! We still communicate with each other about once or twice a year, and reminence about that day!

Peace and Love to all, DonnaJean

Happy Hippie Saturday to everyone!

BON'O: I was just a kid in the 60's and I think my folks were thrilled about that! I could have gotten into some serious trouble as I was curious about everything. Instead, I just rode my bike and played softball and kickball and swam. I do remember Nixon running for President and was aware of Vietnam. I wore a POW bracelet for three years. I still have half of it, as we broke them if the soldier on the bracelet was killed.

My mom was into the crafts of the sixties. We made tie-dyed t-shrts in a big soup pot. And melted and dripped crayons down the sides of wine bottles for candle holders. And incense! There was always sandalwood incense burning. My brother had black light posters and a lava lamp. He also had those speaker boxes that changed colors with whatever music was played. And it seemed to always be "In A Gadda da Vida"

It was an innocent time for us. And a fun one.

I'm off to read the posts now.

Dang!! It took five tries to get back here! I wonder if anyone else is having the same problems?

SCIRISH: Congrats on FIRST. I hope your back is feeling better.

TINKA: My sixties were like your fifties. We played outside til nine pm in the summer, the door was always open and everything seemed so much quieter..at least to a kid of eight.

GOLDIE: Mt first album was the Monkees too! I played it to death. My brother liked the Beatles and he just cringed when I blasted "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" and "Auntie Griselda".

IBB: I am so happy to see you back and posting. Missed you. So sorry for what you have been through lately. I am glad to hear of your friends positive report.

GLYNIS: I felt the same way when I went into Barnes and Noble and asked for a book on Frank Sinatra. The teenager behind the counter looked totally confused and asked me how to spell his name.
When my nephew was starting first grade, he was telling me all the supplies he needed. I said "Did you get paste?" He looked up at me and said "What's paste?" Ok, I'm officially old now!

VIG: I remember sitting on the floor watching President Kennedy's funeral. And "Those Were The Days" was one of my favorite songs. Ok, give me a break, I was like 8. I'm sure you remember more than me, you are so much older after all! ;)

Part 2 on its way..I hope..

Pssst...Boomers~~**whispering**Do you think we should tell ZonaBABY why Mom always had sandalwood (or God forbid, patchouli) incense burning?

Mary/MI said...

I loved reading all your posts.

I think I had a pretty sheltered life in as far as the politics whirling around me in the 60's.
My parents were very strict, but I still managed to have a normal teenage life. I went to sock hops where the boys would gather on one side of the room while we gals stayed on the other side. Some of the boys would ask the girls to dance, but the girls eventually wound up dancing with each other.
I remember the circus coming to town which was held under a tent, riding on the carousel, rollerskating at the palladium, marching in our high school band, going to away football games on the high school buses, ironing my curly hair until it was straight, spending time with school friends at the local lake, and of course, those ugly gym uniforms!

Zona said...

BON'O: Mom was strictly a Pall Mall Gold lady...see Easter pic...it was as she got into her own 60's that she wondered about what she called "wacky tobacky"..

Mary/MI said...

Mr Mary is licking his wounds. He went outside to fill his cig. lighter with butane and spilled some on his hand. Like a goof he didn't wash his hand. All of a sudden I hear this clapping sound, now I know our beloved Spartys lost their basketball game yesterday so he wasn't clapping for them and he's not into racing, and the dog is outside, so I check in on him, yup, he lit up a cig and poof! hand on fire! He was clapping trying to put the fire out. His only thought was "this is my bowling hand!" LOL!
Poor baby! smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette.... no sympathy here heh heh

Bon'O said...

Mary/MI~~Did you have to remind me of "gym uniforms"? I immediately got a visual of me in my maroon short shorts and white snap-front short-sleeve shirt. That led to the painful memory of red-faced runs around the high-school track, spurred on (almost literally!) by our teacher, Wendy Jerome, wife of Olympic track star Harry Jerome. That woman was possessed! As long as we're remembering '60's accomplishments (and especially to honor our Canadian Owls), here's a bit about him from Wikipedia: (Imagine having his wife for a P.E. teacher!)

Henry "Harry" Winston Jerome (September 30, 1940 – December 7, 1982) was a Canadian track and field runner. He was the grandson of John Howard, a railway porter who represented Canada in the 1912 Summer Olympics.

Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, he moved to North Vancouver at age 12.

He competed in college for Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon. He competed for Canada in the 1960, 1964, and 1968 Summer Olympics, winning 100 metre bronze in 1964. He also won the gold in the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and the 1967 Pan American Games. During his career, Jerome set a total seven world records, including running the 100 metres in 10.2, 10.1 and finally 10.0 seconds successively, despite suffering an injury so severe at the Perth Commonwealth Games in 1962 that doctors initially believed he would never walk again.

After retiring from athletics in 1969, he was invited by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to help create Canada's new Ministry of Sport. Jerome held a number of senior positions in the ministry but resigned over the government's cancellation of a large-scale public-private partnership he had negotiated with Kellogg's to promote youth participation in athletics.

In 1970 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2001 he was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.

The Harry Jerome International Track Classic - a prestigious track and field meet held annually at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, British Columbia - is named in Jerome's honour. The Harry Jerome Sports Centre, home to the Burnaby Velodrome, in Burnaby, British Columbia is named after Jerome, as are the weight room at his Alma Mater the University of Oregon and the track and field stadium in Prince Albert. The Stanley Park sea wall in his native Vancouver is graced with a 9-foot bronze statue of him. The annual Harry Jerome Awards, the national awards dinner for Canada's black community organized by the Black Business and Professionals Association (BBPA), is named after him.

Harry Jerome died of a brain aneurysm in December 1982, at the age of only 42.

BonO, That was amazing.I can't imagine having his wife for a teacher!
I love to read Bios. I think the first one I read was on Albert Einstein. I am in complete awe of how people have come to accomplish so much. The book " A Beautiful Mind" is one of my favorite "people" books.

I just got a look at Mr Mary's hand. Yikes, it's awful! Now I am feeling bad. Any good burn suggestions out there?

BonO, By "amazing, I was talking about Mr Jerome, not that it was amazing having his wife for a teacher LOL!

Zona~~You've got mail. Hurry with the 15 degrees. It's snowing!

Mary/MI~~ (from Mayo Clinic site:

For minor burns, including first-degree burns and second-degree burns limited to an area no larger than 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) in diameter, take the following action:

Cool the burn. Hold the burned area under cold running water for at least five minutes, or until the pain subsides. If this is impractical, immerse the burn in cold water or cool it with cold compresses. Cooling the burn reduces swelling by conducting heat away from the skin. Don't put ice on the burn.
Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage. Don't use fluffy cotton, which may irritate the skin. Wrap the gauze loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin. Bandaging keeps air off the burned skin, reduces pain and protects blistered skin.
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. These include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Never give aspirin to children or teenagers.
Minor burns usually heal without further treatment. They may heal with pigment changes, meaning the healed area may be a different color from the surrounding skin. Watch for signs of infection, such as increased pain, redness, fever, swelling or oozing. If infection develops, seek medical help. Avoid re-injuring or tanning if the burns are less than a year old — doing so may cause more extensive pigmentation changes. Use sunscreen on the area for at least a year.

Caution

Don't use ice. Putting ice directly on a burn can cause frostbite, further damaging your skin.
Don't apply butter or ointments to the burn. This could prevent proper healing.
Don't break blisters. Broken blisters are vulnerable to infection.

WOW! I LOVE reading all your stories!! How fun!

Whabbear: I had no idea you were a scientist for NASA! (My dad would LOVE to talk to you some day...he has always been an amateur astronomer. He even built a very cool telescope once! (But he traded it for some radio parts as we was also a Ham Radio Operator)!

Zona, Donna Jean, Mary, and Bono...Love your stories too! Actually I love them all!

Well, I'm off to dinner with my best friend. She has another friend of hers over. They were both in teenagers in the 60's! I'll have to have them reminisce for me! My best friend is still a bit of a "hippie" and loves to garden....hmmm...perhaps I should look more closely at what she "grows"!

I am so "innocent"! REALLY!!! I never even TRIED pot! The worst I have done is drink (under-aged). I guess I lived a very sheltered life (and I'm OK with that)!

PEACE, LOVE, and ROCK & ROLL to you all!

Wow, I truly feel like I have won an academy award or something! Thank you, CPGEM, for the "this night owl said" honors. My first time...so exciting. This has been a monumental week...I lost my virginity twice...first for winning a march and now for "tnos". Very cool...but exhausting..I must go lie down!!

BonO...Harry Jerome's name is one that we who live on the west coast of British Columbia hear alot about because of the statue and his track meet and sports centre, but I am embarrassed to say I never knew all that much about him. Thank you for providing such interesting information! And what a PE teacher you had....wow!

Hi Tink...hope you are having a restful day! I agree and it was the same for me..I didn't really learn about Canadian history until I took history as a minor in university. Sad!

It cracks me up that on the day that we are talking about the 60's and the word protest has come up a time or two, that I was at a protest today. It was a huge rally to protect the ancient forests - the big, beautiful old growth trees. It was really well attended and I always love walking behind the drummers kind of dancing down the streets of Victoria chanting hey hey ho ho... . Alot of the people who have kept their lifestyle from the 60's - the true and wonderful hippies- came from the islands surrounding this big island. And there were a lot of young people there who probably heard about it from a Facebook site....which was great to see them there hopefully learning about something really important to be saved and protected. But it made me realize that I am officially an old fart. I looked around and saw many people at this protest drinking coffee out of disposable cups and papers with info about old growth forests being thrown on the ground, yet people were there to protect the trees that are being logged to make those paper cups and paper. Huh? And I wanted to yell to all of them -what are you doing......but I didn't...I old fart seethed for awhile and then kept on dancing! It was a good afternoon!

Ok I will try again I have been foaded 3 times in the last hour!

The sixties what I remember is hazy but I will give it a shot.

I remember a local TV kids show called JP Patches my brownie troop was on it but I had mumps and had to stay home. I remember my parents watching the news and whispering about Vietnam. I remember they watched Ed Sullivan and barely remember the beatles and all of the crazy commotion around them.

I do remember that one of my Uncles Leslie Murray was and still is MIA from Vietnam his body was never recovered. His name is on the wall in Washington D.C., the whole family went into mourning at that time. Also another Uncle Vincent Murray lost both of his legs in Vietnam and was sent home.

Every one in my family would watch anything that had Elvis, Tom Jones etc...

I also remember I had to wear alot of dresses as pants were just not the thing for little girls at that time.

Mom died in 1968 and Dad did his own dropping out.

Some of my older cousins were experimenting with mind bending drugs, Acid, Speed, Heroin. I only know this from later as the family whispered about it in corners and at the kitchen tables, where I and other cousins tried to eavesdrop and look inconspicuous. One of the cousins died from an overdose.

I do especially remember playing outside until it was dark and no one worried. Hide and seek in the dark was the best game ever.

Ok off to read and catch up!

Thanks, Joey! And, I know I already sent this to you in an e-mail, but I'm so glad you've returned to the blogging world! You make blogging more fun both here and in Rossland!

Jennifer: LOL! If you're interested, check out my MySpace page:

www.myspace.com/whabbear

I blog on astronomy topics; the latest batch has been a long time coming, and is still brewing, but one of the installments was "published" here in the nest as the first guest blog.

But I'm not really an astronomer! I just play one in cyberspace! LOL!

Is you Dad into the space program? Please tell him to write his elected officials that he supports NASA! :)

OK, another memory from the 60's. We owned a powerboat that we'd use on Georgian Bay in the late 60's, and I remember clearly, one fine summmer day, coming up on a boat that was flying a swastika, and was filled with hippies.

OMG! My parents were just beside themselves with outrage. They were both quite conservative (my Dad is a WW2 vet), and they looked on the whole hippie movement with horror anyway. Plus, my Dad associated the anti-war movement with the draft dodgers who had moved to Canada, whom he absolutely despised.

Hmmmm. Tink, the more I think about it, the more you are right. I would have caused my parents enormous grief if I'd been older during these times!

Meanwhile, I've been gobbling up people's stories about the 60's today! DJ, what a great narrative! Very interesting! Bon'O, thanks for posting the blog topic, and how great that TN-VIG protested today!

Waving to MEK, IBB, Mary, Zona, Barb in WA, Glynis, and Dreama!

Sorry to hear about Mr Mary's hand... burns are just about the worst! :(

Bon'O said...

Keep those stories coming, Owls. You impress me so!

LynnD~~Who in the PNW could forget J P Patches?! And what joy in being a child when parental supervision needed only to be a stern "Be home before dark".

Living a somewhat sheltered life, I felt the entire world was an innocent wonder to explore until the assassination of JFK. I remember well sitting in Home Ec class, making a pair of baby doll pajamas, when the announcement was made and we were sent home to remain glued to the TV for 4 days. On the 25th anniversary, highlights (seems like the wrong word to use) of those 4 days were replayed. I recorded it, but didn't even need to watch. I still carry the images of the gunshots, Walter Cronkite removing his glasses, looking at the clock for the exact time, and announcing to the world that JFK had died. Then the image of little John-John's salute, Lee Harvey Oswald, subsequent assassinations of MLK and Bobby. It all still plays like a video on my eyelids as if it were last week. Nothing in American life was ever quite the same after that.

VIG~~What synchronicity with your activity today. Yesterday was our annual Volunteer Beach Cleanup Day, today was opening Campaign Headquarters for May primaries (finally!). It's really refreshing to feel like there ARE things we can do to renew activism and involvement like 'back in the day'.

So many of you lived the sixties!

Great stories and Donna Jean you were a wild one! LOL

Mary keep an eye on Mr. Mary's hand that sounds like it could get nasty!

I do remember one xmas when we lived in the Fremont area of Seattle. It sticks in my memory because my cousin David had a bike that was army green and looked like a little motorcycle. Well his parents (and Mine) had very little or no money. They had bought David a new bike and wanted to get his sister her own and could not afford it. So they painted his army bike pink and put a basket on it. The whole family gathered xmas eve. The big presents were always saved for last. I distinctly remember my cousin who was all of 4 or 5 at the time taking one look at that bike and saying "Why did Santa paint David's bike for me?

I was 2 years older and remember thinking she was so cheated out of a new bike.

I don't know where that came from but the memory just floated up from somewhere. I think that was probably xmas 1968 or 1969.

I also remember that one of my Aunts and Uncles had a 1960 something thunderbird and it was pink! LOL

YAY! 'teach in the house!

I was just starting to prep dinner and the mind wandered to "Bonanza", the first hour-long TV drama in 'living color'. Haven't given it a thought forever, but suddenly I could hear the theme song and see the burning Ponderosa map at the beginning and the beautiful technicolor pine trees surrounding the big compound. All that COLOR was so incredibly beautiful! Almost as beautiful as Michael Landon!!

Then I started chuckling...how did Pa Cartwright end up with one fat jolly son, one skinny stern son and one total hottie? And what the Heck was with Hop-Sing?

That made me start thinking of my all-time favorite '60s series, Route 66, and my first idol crush on George Maharis. OMG, I was so in love. They came to Astoria OR where we lived then to film an episode centered around the fish canneries. Talk about a tweenager's dream--to actually SEE him up close in that Corvette!

It was many years later that I had to do a little self-analysis, trying to figure why I was so attracted first to him (who knew he was gay back then?), then later to Johnny Mathis and George Michael........Whab, I think I must have been a 'fag-hag' before I knew there was such a thing!

MEK in AZ said...

Sorry, I disappeared - seems I tried to slice the top of my finger off with the lid of a can today -!!! OUCH!!!!!

anyway -

I grew up in a VERY strict household (IBB can attest to this) - my father, being in the military, ran a VERY tight "ship" - we lived in Colorado Springs for most of the sixties..
We had ONE tv and it was NEVER on during the dinner hour. You watched what your father wanted to watch and the kids were the "remote control" - We watched Walter Cronkite, the Ed Sullivan show, Gunsmoke was one of my dad's favorites. Barely got to watch tv during the week, cuz you had homework and early bedtimes..

My mom made most of IBB and my clothes - we usually got to pick out the material that we wanted, but mom ALWAYS had the final word. If we were going downtown - we had to wear dresses and our good shoes - AND girls had to wear dresses or skirts to school, boys had to tuck their shirts in..

When we answered the phone - it was always.. (whatever rank my dad was a the time) Major K's resident, this is ME. Our phone calls were limited to 10 minutes and you had to use the phone in the kitchen - heck, we only had TWO, one in the parents bedroom and the kitchen.... AND, it was really exciting when we got the 6 ft extension cord and could actually walk out into the living room!!

Mr. Mek is home with dinner - I will be back!! to finish my wonderful - ha ha - memories!!!

Mary - Even though you are much younger than I, we shared many of the same experiences. We both even like marmalade. I hope Mr. Mary's hand will be all right. He could be sore for quite a while.

Whabbear - You are right. Everything was so very new to many in the 60's, they didn't survive. They needed an anchor.
My reason I thought maybe it's a good thing you were too young for the revolution was because my ex always felt badly he missed it. He said he would have tried everything. The way he loved to spend every Friday night at Cocktail lounges I believed him. He would never have been as successful in life if had been involved in drugs.

Joey - I watched an "Andy Griffith DVD while I was having my rest. Those shows never grow old.

Bon O - Great Blog. Yes I just scratched the surface of my memories. I will see what others write before I add more.

Donna Jean - Loved your post. You could write a book with your memories.

Zona - I was waiting to see what my cyber daughter did. I love the fact you were into crafts and playing outside until dark.

Jennifer - I too have never tried pot or any other illegal drug. My dad always told me if I tried them once I could be instantly addicted and my life as I knew it was over. It was such an exaggeration but I believed him.

VIG - I am glad you may have saved some trees today. Good for you.

Lynn D - J.P. Patches was my niece's favourite show. You are the only other person I have ever known that watched it. She loved her J.P. Patches.

As teachers we were not allowed to wear pants to school until the 70's. They had to be pant suits, not a blouse and slacks.

I didn't watch the video again before my rest so I think I will now. I have bookmarked the site.

Bono: Early Fag Hag and didn't even know it! LMAO Oh the Ponderosa! I remember my Dad never missed Gun Smoke! Later in life I always wondered why Miss Kitty was OK but say the word prostitute and all hell broke loose! LMAO

MEK: I remember those phones ours was in the kitchen and that is where we had to talk for everyone to hear! And yes those long cords!! always tangled but ours stretched out the patio doors when you wanted to be sneaky!

This was not in the 6o's but early seventies. My Dad got our first remote control TV. Does anyone remember those? It turned the TV on and off and changed channels. It made a clunka clunka sound when you would change the channel it kind of was like a bulky garage door opener. One of my step brothers at the time realized that if you jingled a set of keys if front of the TV that changed the channel too! LMAO we would do this when dad was asleep on the couch with the remote tightly gripped in his hand! He would wake up and see what was on and shake the remote! LOL

Waving at Zona and Vig and Whab and Jennifer and Iteach and hell anyone else I missed.

Thank you for the SacBarb update MEK!

The best part JP was waving back at us like a mad fool! I remember being amazed that he drove a car like real people!

I am enjoying reading everyone's stories!!

We had to go to church EVERY Sunday - my dad played golf and mom and the kids went to church - IBB described the ride to church just as I remember - the two lane dirt road with the wild horses - we always 'dibbed' which one would be ours one day!!

Dad watched golf on tv when he got home from playing golf - the kids were the ones that 'fetched' his beer when he needed another one.. so I do remember Arnold Palmer, Jack ,etc. NOW, I'm a huge Tiger fan!!! Our household did evolve around ALL sports!!

We had family meal time every night - each one of us kids was asked how our day was and we to tell something - then, you didn't speak unless you were spoken too. It was a HUGE treat to go to the A&W Root Beer when it opened - each of us got to get a hamburger (cheese, if you had been really good), a small fry and a drink - sometimes they would splurge and you got to get a milk shake!! Us kids had to eat in the back of the station wagon......

GOod grief - I'm not thinking these are really GOOD memories, just how it was......

maybe this is why I can't remember ALOT about my childhood - I do know that my father was gone alot - he would get sent on remote assignments, that we could not go - so my mom was left alone to raise us - back in those days - there was no support groups for military families - they just dealt with it. and were expected to.... no questions asked....

We had to walk to school and had to walk home for lunch and then go back..... our school did not have a cafeteria - those that had "special circumstances" brought a brown paper bag or a lunch box.....

I'll think of some more- I'm sure this is really long by now!!!

MEK: Have to say it..one of my best memories of all, Friday night at the A&W RootBeer stand. It would still be hot out and my dad would take us all for a huge mug of Rootbeer. Nothing better.

When my Aunt moved in with us, she introduced us to Boston Coolers..or Rootbeer Floats. She'd line up eight glasses and plop in the vanilla ice cream then fill it with the root beer. Next the straw and a spoon. I don't think there was a word spoken for 15 minutes. Seriously good stuff!! :)

The reason we had to answer the phone SO politely - the General might have been on the other end!!

Lynn D - yes, those cords always got tangled - then it took 15 minutes to unwind them - we would stretch it as far as we could to be "private"!!

We played outside all the time - I remember mom telling us to "go play in the street" - cuz that is where kids played... you came in for dinner and then back out to play until dark...... (if your homework was done - otherwise, you were inside)

also - if you did NOT eat everything on your plate - you sat at the table until you finished or bedtime - which ever came first...

Goldie: First albums... I clearly remember my sister negotiating with my mother to split the cost and enable her to buy her first album (she's a year and a half older then me)... it was "Help"!! And we used to have babysitters in the mid sixties, of course. One of them once regaled us with stories of how she and her friends tried to hide in the Toronto hotel rooms where the Beatles were going to be staying. We were totally bug-eyed!

MEK: Did you not have any of the root bear floats at the BABB? I remember you were kind of hung over that day, so not drinking much at all... is that how you avoided them? LOL!

East Bay J said...

Speaking of the Ponderosa Ranch, you can (or used to be able to) tour it. It's in Incline Village, Nevada.

You see the actual film set, even Hop Sing's kitchen! There is even a life=size mannequin of Hops Sing, slaving over his stove.

You can see Lake Tahoe from the ranch, and enjoy a "Hossburger" at the restaurant.

It's really a fun way to spend the day. I heard that it had closed, although I'm not sure.

Whab we will make root bear floats in your honor at the BABB. Those were sooo good :)

MEK~~At least you had 'real' sports and got your news from Uncle Walter. I had the same military (WWII Marine) and religious upbringing, but the news was delivered by the curmudgeonly Chet Huntley and David Brinkley and Saturday night TV was Lawrence Welk and Wrestling! I have to admit for a while I would have killed to be Janet Lennon of the Lennon Sisters.

Bon'O said...

EBJ~~Just caught up with the last few posts after dinner. Sounds like Whab would prefer the 'Hossburger' LOL!

I never go to the Colony, but had to pop over there to 'lurk' at the Yellow Party. Looks like Joey's having a good time! Joey, did you save US some lemon bars?

We watched the mickey mouse club and I wanted to be Annette.. American Band Stand - oh my...

I remember getting the little 45's when a song came out - I remember being able to buy a TON of candy for a NICKEL!!

Whabby - LOL - I did NOT partake in the floats at the BBQ - YES, I was hung over from those TALL rum and cokes from happy hour the night before!! :-) but I sure had a blast!!! :-) and yes, I was NOT drinking at the BBQ -

My name is MEK and YES, I was hung over!!!!!!!! and very proud of it!!

Hey, did anyone else get all their cosmetics from the Avon lady when you were a kid? I remember my first lipsticks. Wasn't it called 'Cameo Pink'? And 'Persian Wood' fragrance, Skin*So*Soft bath oil? Wasn't until many years later when Dad discovered what good bug-repellant it was for hunting and fishing trips!

MEK in AZ said...

Bono - YES, the avon lady actually RANG the doorbell and had all her goodies in her little makeup case - none of this throwing a brochure on your porch and running!!!

BUT - we were NOT allowed to wear makeup until high school and then - it was just eye shadow....

my mother NEVER wore makeup - just lipstick....

Wow, it has been several hours since I posted "my story"! Laurie and I have had a very slow relaxing day, and now I thought I would fly in and see what is up!

All your stories about the sixties are lovely, and resonates so much with me! The TV shows, the playing until dark, etc.

That was the EARLY 60's for me. You all know now what I was up to in the LATE 60's! And seriously, I really wasn't all that wild. Just a few little times I messed up! Mostly, I was a good girl!

SACBARB and SHARON UPDATE!!!

I talked with Barb earlier this afternon, and they did not go to the volcano today. They are going next Thursday, and decided to take a Tour instead of drive there themselves.

I think that is a good idea. We drove ourselves, and it was a very long day! But it was easier on the kids being in our own van. But if I were to do it again, alone, I would definitely take the Tour Bus.

They are staying in a very nice Wyndham Resort, and today were taking a drive up the coast along the beach.

Just like MEK, she told me how pissed she was about paying money and not being able to get on to the sites she wanted!

I told her about a couple of places I found in Kailua-Kona that had internet access (you don't need your own computer) and hopefully that may work. Maybe we will actually hear from her soon!!!

She so enjoyed her visit with Turtle! She said it was so much fun, and Sue took them to a nice place for drinks and they could see real "turtles" and a dolphin. Most of you have already seen the
pictures on MySpace.

She sends her love to all, and like I said, maybe she will be able to conect with us soon!

~~GardenerGirl~~ Hi girlfriend!! I have missed you! You were so sweet to Miss Laurie and myself over on the R blog earlier this year. I am so glad you made your way over here too! It's fine to go back and forth between blogs. I do, and so do a few others.

There are NO rules here on the Owls Nest, except the ones mentioned earlier about being
non-judgemental and kind to all, so come on in!

~~Whabbear~~ I think you got the best of both sides of the 60's. That is what makes you so wonderful. So many advances in the Space Program during that time, and then also the Peace Movement began. So many horrible things too though happened. The assasinations of our Wonderful President John F. Kennedy, the most wonderful Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King, and then, OMG, I was watching this on TV, the assasination of another man destined to become President, Robert Kennedy.

I think alot of the song by Billy Joel " We Didn't Start The Fire".

Yes, as the mini-movie says, the
60's was the end and beginning of an era. We will NEVER go back to that time. Peace marches, people sincerely standing up for whAt they believe in.

Kent State! Anyone remember that?? (yes, that happened in May 1970) but, because of the 60's revolution!

~~Tinka~~ I am so happy that the
60's were a wonderful decade for you. You have a totally different take on that generation than most of us. And I am so glad you enjoyed the Elvis part of the movie.

~~Jennifer~~ Being born in 1969 must make all of these posts seem so foreign to you. But, I am glad you saw the movie. I emailed the link to my daughters, both born in the 70's so they could see the reality of the 60's.

So much of the rights and privileges people of all races, nationalities, creeds, sexuality, etc, came from the 60's. I stand here PROUD to be a part of that generation!

And as I have ALWAYS said since the Sixties,

Peace and Love to All,
DonnaJean

ALso - you NEVER knew your friends parent's first names -cuz it was always Mr. and Mrs. - NEVER ever addressed them with anything else.

In fact, still to THIS day - I call some dear family friends Mr. and Mrs. - they are trying SO hard to break me of it - BUT - I can't..

Sir and Maam - still do that!!

I was SO naive growing up and still, in some ways, am!!!!!

MEK in AZ said...

I asked Mr. MEK what childhood memories he had of the sixties -

His first response was - remembering when Pres. Kennedy was shot -

then he said - he and his best friend used to walk up and down the railroad tracks and put pennies on the track for the trains to run over. then try to find it afterwards.

said they used to cuss up a storm along the track - cuz you could NOT say those words in front of your parents..

(these are things i never knew about him - how fun!!)

Donna Jean - Yes I had a different take on the 60's than all you youngsters. I was in my 20's and paid little attention to things on the news. I was more intent on getting my babies to sleep through the night and making sure they got plenty of fresh air. Every one would wheel their babies to Safeway each day. The baby carriages would all be lined up in front of the store while we shopped. No one worried that they may be stolen. Babies also needed fresh air when they had their afternoon naps. Ourside most home would be a baby carriage on the front porch with a baby wrapped warmly sleeping inside it. Can you imagine that happening today?
In 1960, we had a rotating T.V. antenna. It wasn't remote. It faced 3 different directions depending on whether you wanted to watch CBS, NBC or ABC. If you wanted to change channels someone had to go outside and rotate the antenna.
It wasn't a hard thing to do and was quite often my job. My dad had conned me into thinking only I could do it really well.

Zona - Didn't the A & W root beer taste better in those days? I think it did.

Mek - I sold Avon the year I taught kindergarten only in the mornings. I didn't enjoy the job and made very little money.

I was teaching up in Northern B.C. the day Kennedy was shot. There was no T.V. in that town so we listened to the radio. We were all so worried it might be the beginning of W.W. 3. We found out later we were the only district in B.C. that did not send the kids home. We kept teaching even though we were all in shock.

Be back later to read more.

I finally just read all the comments, Thanks to all who shared!

What stuck out the most was JFK, I was two or three yrs old when it happened, however when I grew and the story was told to me, it had such an effect on me. I think because when my mom told me she was crying.

It is so good to think back and remember~~

Earth Hour is over. Reading by candlelight for an hour was quite lovely.

I just reread all the posts today. It is has been such a far out and groovy look at a far out and groovy decade!

Zona...yes,because I am so much older than you, six whole days in fact, I am sure our experience of that decade must have been quite different. I do remember however, the tv on for JFK's funeral. I also remember A&W rootbeer in the frosty mugs! And rootbeer floats and playing outside until 9 in the summer (and then when the Mom was calling from the doorstep of one's house, it was time to run home immediately) And riding bikes, and playing softball and tie-dye and incense and hey, man...I think that even though I am much older we had very similar lives in the 60's!!! Cool!

Bono...beach clean-ups, opening campaign offices, and earth hour...volunteerism and altruism at its finest! Good on you!!!

Tinka...hope you are having a relaxing Saturday evening...I bet earth hour contributed to that. Great!

Door to door salesmen and service people....I had forgotten about them. I remember now the Avon lady coming to the door and vacuum salesmen and the Fullerbrush man (I don't know if that was a Canadian thing or not) and we had a milkman, and a breadman and and a laundry guy who came and picked up and dropped off my Dad's work shirts and lab coats. My Mom could just call up the small store at the end of the street and the bagboy would run what she needed down the street to our house. And she would just go and pay off her bill at the end of every month. Wow...definitely different days then now!

Does anybody remember the Ted Mack Amateur hour?It was on Sunday afternoons before Walt Disney! I used to love that show!!!

MEK in AZ said...

Good Night, my friends..

Goldie - while watching the Dateline story again - I also was wondering why these people didn't notice - but as they said -they didn't know there was a "puzzle" and that hundreds of people had been in and out of the room - EVEN Whitney's own friends.... and they were told she would be in "altered" state - SO - i guess you just keep believing - AND, this will teach us all NOT to let the President of the University do the 'identifying the body" --- very sad!!!!!! for all involved.

I hope everyone has an excellent Sunday!!

Be at Peace!!!

Ok, may I first say, Thank You!!! There are so many familiar names I see here, it's like a bunch of old friends! You are all so welcoming, and it's much appreciated. Thanks to all of you who said, "hey!" Lynn, Whabb, Joey, Dreama, iteach anyone else I'm leaving out, thanks so much!

To the TOTD...I was born 2/9/64, and for any diehard Beatle or Ed Sullivan fans, you'll no doubt remember that night was the debut of the Beatles on the Sullivan show! While mom was pushing! My little bit of infamy....

My mom often says that she was too busy raising kids in the 60's (sister '57, brother '59, me '64), so it's her reason to not remember much about the war, the hippies and Woodstock, or the great music that was evolving. Now that I'm a mom to 3 boys, I'll probably use them as an excuse to not be more informed about our terrible war going on now when they are adults and question me incessantly about what my generation was doing to invoke peace. Oh well, we do our best...or think that we do.

Some of my really fond and vivid memories of the 60's -70's, however, are:
- "Kids, go warm up the TV!" Mr. GG and I still jokingly say that to each other when we're ready to watch the rare TV program with the kids. We're a bit fanatical about The Office and have all 3 seasons on DVD.
-Baskin Robbins or 31 Flavors - a rare and special treat! Mint chip.
-Barbie dolls. The "Julia" Barbie Doll I got at a neighborhood department store in La Canada, CA when I was about 6 or 7. I'm caucasion, but I loved Diahnn Carrol. The Julia doll was so unique because of her dark color and I was entranced.
-The Friday night line up on the console TV: The Brady Bunch, Partridge Family and Love American Style. We never missed it, all 3 of us kids. We laid on the floor with wet hair from the bath, in our pj's, with a bowl of popcorn dad cooked up on the stovetop. Good times, good times...

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

GG

Iteach: I am a slave to the Sunset Garden Book, which divides areas into zones. I'm zone 22. It's good that you're doing research on your particular area. There is no substitute for one of the most important golden rules of gardening, which is to put the RIGHT plant in the RIGHT place. I've tried to coax along the not-so-right plant in the wrong place and it's seasons upon seasons of toil and trouble. The joy of gardening is to enjoy the space once you've planted it!

Have fun!

Thank you all so much for really getting into the TOTD with me, today! I was SO worried that, with many of our Boomer-Generation Owls away, it might be a real bust. But, what a 'trip' it has been. Love you guys!

VIG~~Your post about Sunday afternoon TV brought back things I'd almost forgotten. The highlights of Sunday afternoon at our house were 'Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom' and Allen Ludden's 'College Bowl'. Does anyone else remember that show? It was a Q & A knowledge competition with teams from colleges all around the country. Each show had a video promo from the participating campuses. I think that's when I first became serious about getting an education. Before that, school was just an enjoyable social gathering interrupted by those darn classes you were expected to attend.

G'GIRL~~Glad you feel welcome in our cozy nest.

JENNIFER & ITEACH~~Best for the first day back after Spring Break. **Tylenol**

Special hugs to AMICUS, BIRDEE, and LOVEY for brighter days ahead.

Being born in 1962 my memories of the 60's don't relate much to the news etc until late in the decade.
I think I was too busy playing "kick the can" "hide-n-seek" and such to remember.

But I do have clear recollections of sitting in front of the TV and watching Neil Armstong walking on the moon in 1969 (of course) and also remember the trail of "The Chicago 8", the Black Panther members who we're tried for the rioting and such. I guess it was about that time that I started paying attention to the news. My dad was big on making sure we knew what was going on around us....

Great TOTD and loved everyones stories.
