Random acts of Kindness

such a very endearing story
and so very glad she shared

Random acts of Kindness

by East Bay J

One day, a couple years ago, Mr. EBJ and I were home, we were just hanging out and talking. He got up and went into the kitchen, and looked outside. He turned and immediately started to go outside. "There is a bird splashing in the pool" he said.

I went out with him, and saw a tiny bird, flapping hopelessly. Mr. EBJ grabbed the net and carefully removed him.

We saw that his tiny claws were both stuck into some "peanuts", the styrofoam packing material. This is what kept him from drowning, we were just amazed. Where did he find the styrofoam? Could he have landed in the pool and luckily there was some that happened to be floating? Or had he become stuck somewhere else, and flown into the pool?

The poor little creature was exhausted, he was breathing so hard, and limp.

I got some towels from the kitchen and started drying him. I thought he was going to die.

We sat in the sun with him and carefully rubbed him, he continued to lay there with his eyes closed, struggling to breathe. It was just heartbreaking.

Mr. EBJ went inside to get the phone book, to see if there was some sort of wildlife place we could call. We didn't know what to do with him.

After a while, probably 20 minutes, he opened his eyes. I noticed his breathing wasn't so labored. I continued to rub him gently. He was drying off! And he seemed to be responding!

The little guy started moving around, and spread his wings out. We both thought he was trying to dry them. He pooped into the towel, I took that as a good sign! His breathing seemed to become normal!

I put him in a clean towel, continued to rub. He seemed to get stronger and stronger, then he stood up!

He flapped his little wings, and made a small peep. Mr. EBJ took him, he was going to put him in the ivy growing on the fence, to see if he could stand on his own, and if he was steady.

I think we probably both held our breath, but the little guy stood there and flapped some more! He looked strong and looked like he was ready to fly.

We backed off to see what he would do. We were ready with our towels if he were to fall. To our delight and amazement, a few moments later he took off and flew. We watched as long as we could, convinced that he would be ok.

We both cried and I don't think the smiles left our faces for hours. We were so happy, the feeling we had was priceless, and the feeling from helping that little tiny bird left an enormous impact on both of us.

Have you ever had a moment when you helped someone or something that you never told anyone? Have you stopped at an accident and helped? Have you rescued a cat out of a tree?

Has someone helped you and you want to share?

I would love to hear our owls nest random acts of kindness stories!

Wow Lovey was first!!

Hi Ibebold!!!

EBJ: That was a wonderful blog to wake up to this morning! It was so well written I was holding my breath for the little bird.

I don't know if these qualify for random acts of kindness. But I do little things all the time.

Like letting other cars out into the flow of traffic. Sharing a smile for no reason. I have been known to hand over change in the grocery line when someone is short. Just little things but they always make my day when I do them.

Where I live we find lost animals all the time. You have to be careful though because you never know how the animal will react if you try to catch them.

I have saved one of the neighbors Goats that have gotten out into the main road and a cow or two! Mr. Lynn D has saved more than one injured bird from the dogs and neighbors cats.

The little things just seem so comforting!

Hi to anyone who posts after me!

EBJ very good post.

I have been pondering about it while my students are in music class.

Most of my students are economically challenged. They don't own beds and sometimes don't know where there next meal is coming from. So I have tried very hard over the years to surprise my children/students with little gifts to help ease their pain.

It is very easy for me to do random acts of kindness for my students and strangers. It comes natural.

But you know what?

I am not very good at doing random acts of kindess with the people closest to me.

Why?

I don't know, I guess I take them for granted.

This is a good reminder for me to also spread random acts of kindnes to my husband, parents, and in-laws.

Thnk you EBJ.

HI IBB, Lynn, Iteach & Joey, the earlybirds.

And Carol, thank you for posting that!

I thought we had taken some pictures of the bird, but I can't find them.

We still wonder how he got stuck in the styrofoam. It was his lucky day, tho.

Hope you all have a great day!

Good Morning, everyone that has posted and those yet to rise!!

Lovey - congrats at FIRST!!

EBJ - thank you for sharing that heart felt story!! I am SO thankful that the little bird survived...

RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) - I really love to see the reaction of people when you do something nice for them, especially strangers, they always think that you want something - but they wouldn't be "RAK's", if you expected something in return!! :-)

Just Lin - I literally LMAO when I saw you won "100" at 200!! Congrats!! We are all anticipating your exciting reunion!!

I'm off to handle "Mission SI", run other errands and pack a suitcase!!

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!! :-)

EBJ...you're a good and kind person and I love what you and your husband did for that bird.

Good Monday morning Lovey, IBB, Joey, iteach, LynnD!

I think of a random act of kindness from a few years ago...that still effects me more than it ever could have affected the person that I gave a little assistance to. I was in Vancouver in a very wealthy part of town...Vancouver is a gorgeous city, but like all cities has its share of social issues. I was at my very favourite healthy store of all time and outside the store was a young woman who could have been one of my nieces...youthful but instead of a face full of hope, one full of despair. She was obviously homeless and was asking people for their leftovers (doggy bags) from the lovely restaurants they were coming out of. I went into the favourite store and bought her some fruit, nuts, a muffin and a drink and took it out to her. She said thank you and grabbed it out of my hands. She shoved that food into her mouth like she had not seen food for days and maybe she hadn't. I, in all my privileged life, had never seen such hunger...that beautiful young woman was starving. It still blows me away when I think of it and it has changed how I see people that are "begging" on the street, and when I can, instead of money, I give food.

Good Morning Feathered Friends!
LOVEY...1st!! Hoot Hoot! I hope you have a marvelously mischevious Monday!

EBJ...great story. I could picture the little bird in the towel as you rubbed life back into it. Super Blog.

ITEACH...I am so sure you give your students more then even they know at the time. And it is more then the things you can give them

My friend teaches in the inner-city. Last year, he "adopted" a family. His wife works in a large office and her office also adopted that family. Together they filled multiple pick-up trucks for Christmas. They gave the family furniture, clothes, toys and school supplies. And filled the fridge and cupboards with food.

LYNN...you perform random acts of kindness every Wednesday at your local foodbank. And I know you do more...just because you are you!

HI to IBB and JOEY and all that posted while I typed!

My random act for now is to serve breakfast!

Scrambled Eggs or Egg Beaters
Warm Croissants
Hash browns
Thick sliced bacon
Vegetarian Bacon
Grapefruit
Asst. Berries with or without a yogurt sauce
Juices
Coffees
Teas
Waters

Enjoy!

wonderful TOTD.
I rescue stray dogs off of the streets. I have done this for years.Every once in awhile these dogs do have tags and it is rewarding to reunite someone with their beloved pet. It is always rewarding to find them homes and get them off the streets. I still recall one Sunday afternoon years ago going for a drive out in the country. I saw this odd little creature walking beside the road. It swaggered into the center of the road and then just fell down. I stopped my car and picked it up. The little dog was gray and its fur was matted and covered with stickers and burs. She was very weak. I rushed the little dog to my parents home and with my Mother's help I was able to get the wee thing hydrated and then food in its stomach. We got the stickers and burs out of its coat and did the best we could with the matting. The next day I called a groomer and made an appointment. I brought in the litle dog and left her to be professionally groomed. I made sure that the groomer understood that I didn't allow this to happen and that I had found her.The groomer called me at the end of the day to come pick her up. They brought out this beautiful little poodle with pink bows in her hair. She was so breath taking! I shook my head no and I said this is the wrong dog. She is beautiful but she isn't my dog. The groomer smiled really big and said yes this is the same gray dog with the matted hair and underneath all of that matting was a poodle. I was so stunned. She was now healthy and beautiful. I decided to name her Crystal because she was delicate like fine crystal. The next day I took Crystal to the Vet. I was told that she was about 18 months old. Crystal lived a blessed life with us and along side her sibling, a mixed breed Pekingese named Peanut until she passed away at age 14. Peanut was only 9 months old when she was found tossed out along side a lonly stretch of highway in Florida.Peanut was with us until age 16 years.

Good Morning Owls!

EastBayJ: What a great way to start a Monday morning! That was a beautiful, heartwarming story. Thank you for writing the blog, and a big hug to you and Mr. EBJ for saving the little bird.

I have good and bad memories of animal rescues. Images of those I couldn't save still haunt me at times, but in my heart, I know I did everything I could. I've often put my own safety at risk to help animals in need. Last Spring, I stood in the middle of Rt. 3 to stop traffic so a Momma duck and her babies could safely cross. They were trapped on the median. Some people might say that's crazy, but I can't drive by and do nothing.

The worst argument I ever had with my aunt was over a turtle. We were coming home from the mall, and the turtle was trying to cross the highway, but she refused to stop. As soon as I got home, I hopped in my car and headed back, but it was too late. The turtle didn't make it. :(

One of the best things about being a groomer is I often get to continue seeing the dogs and cats I've rescued and fostered, because their new owners bring them back to me for grooming. Knowing I'm going to see them again makes saying goodbye a little easier when they leave my house to go to their new homes.

I'll be back later to catch up on reading everyone else's stories. I have an appointment to get fitted for contact lenses.

Hope today is the start of a great week for everyone!

Hi AMICUS! I loved your duck tale!
I "adopted" a duck at work that was nesting her eggs. I fed her everyday and gave her a bowl that I filled with clean cool water. She even let me get pretty close to give her her food and water. Then I watched her little ducklings grow as they all swam in the pond at work.

DREAMA...It's a beautiful thing to rescue those poor abandoned pups. I was once at a restaurant and after we ate, we were standing out front talking. A beautiful dog wandered over to say hello. He had on a collar, but before I could get to it, he moved on...and then tried to cross the street. Well, he got hit by a car. Miraculously, he got up and immediately came back to me. I comforted him and was able to see there was a phone number on his tag. I called his owner...they lived behind the restaurant. They were all in the yard and didn't turn on the electric fence, so he went for a stroll. I talked to the owner everyday for a week as the dog improved and was fine again.

EJB, what a heartwarming story and great blog!

I saved a bird once, too that flew into the glass on my front door. He hit it so hard that he looked dead--blood was coming from his beak. But he was still breathing so I put him in a shoe box and kept him in our garage overnight. The next morning he was all bright-eyed and standing in the box! So I took him outside and put him on the porch and within an hour he flew away!

Dreama, I also seem to collect stray dogs. Three times since we've moved here we've kept strays until we've found where they belong. I just can't stand to see a lost dog!! And Dreama, I loved your poodle story!

And Lynn D, I also love giving people coupons, extra change, helping with packages, holding doors, etc. It feels so good to do that!

I'm not a bit surprised to hear all of these owl random acts of kindness--I already knew all of you were special that way.

EBJ: What a great story! Thanks for sharing and putting a smile on my face!

We have a homeless lady, a double amputee, who hangs out in her wheel chair in front of the Lone Star on Sunday afternoons. I always make a point of giving her a dollar. She is so nice and friendly, and I love being able to help her a little.

Great TOTD>

Several years back I was at the local pharmacy picking up a prescription. Everything is slow in Hawaii so I needed to wait. I sat down and watched as a young mother walked up with a script to fill. I guess because she had a sick child they filled her almost immediately. When they called her up they also called out my name. I was at the window to the left of hers. Apparently her insurance had lapsed and she did not have the funds to pay for the script. I dug into my pocket, knowing I only had a $5 dollar copay on mine and then leaned in and asked how much the childs meds would cost the Mom if she paid cash. The girl looked at me in disbelief. She said she could not discuss it as it was a breach of "whatever". I asked to see the manager. The manager came over and I explained that I was not trying to get any info that I was simply trying to pay for the meds that the mother obviously could not afford. By this time she was beginning to walk away. The manager said it would be about $35 dollars. So I threw two twenty dollar bills on the counter, told the manager to run after the woman and I turned and walked out of the store.

Several days later I got an envelope from the Pharmacy (Longs Drugs) and inside was a card signed by all the the clerks, pharmacists and the manager. Also inside was a $50 gift certificate.....with a simple note saying thanks for your random act of kindness, it did not go unnoticed.

So there you have my most memorable one not involving a four legged furball....

Hello owlies, hooters, hoots and have dressed feathered friends! (put a thong on lovey)
Great blog today EBJ. I was so happy at the end when the bird made it!

I have been held hostage all day by my damn job. This is the first I have been able to land in the nest. The nerve.

We were at a $3.00 toll when the lady in the booth told us that the guy in front of us paid our toll! So we paid for the person behind us. Hope they kept it up down the line for awhile.

A few months ago I was going to work and it was pouring outside. As I rounded the corner about a block from home I saw a little black cocker spaniel in the street. I knew he didn't aound me, so I jumped out and he came right to me. I put him in the car and called the number on his collar and got voice mail. Left a message then knocked on doors in the neighborhood until I found where he belonged. The daughter was visiting with new baby, had thought the dog was in garage but never shut the door. Grandma answered the door, came out to get him. Do you know the owner never even called back to say thanks? That dog would have been toast if I left out there. He was so sweet.

Ok, back to work- where is everyone today? There seems to be so few postings- hope everyone is well!

And don't worry- I have JODI covered if she didn't get a copy of SI!!

EBJ~~What a precious story...and I'm sure there'd be even more from the rest of the owls if we weren't all a little shy about our 'RAK's...not to be confused with our "racks", 'cuz we're NEVER shy about those !! ;D~

One of my favorite RAK stories involved the return of a found wallet containing over $600 cash and identification, left on the bench of an outdoor table at a Taco Time. Daughter (then about 7) and I were the next to sit there and she found it. About 15 minutes later, while we discussed our plan to take it to the nearby police station, a very pregnant couple in a run down old car drove up and frantically came searching for it. We handed it over to the male, whose face matched the Washington drivers license, except for the look of panic. Daughter's only 'reward' at the time was a quick "Oh, my God, thank you"....but the lesson it planted in her young mind was worth more than the entire $600, for sure. Whenever I'm out and about I enjoy letting other obviously stressed folks merge into traffic, and even when I'm stressed and rushed I like to let the person with one or two items jump ahead of me if I have a full cart in the grocery check-out line. It's a selfish hope that, if I pay it forward often enough, someone will do the same for me.

Hope all are having a managable, if not marvelous, Monday. See ya tonight?

My most recent random act of kindness was toward a young lady. David and I were getting gas at near midnight. As we were leaving we saw a woman who missed a median on the road and hit it as she pulled into the gas station. It busted her tire. She stopped and just put her head into the steering wheel and was sobbing away. I told David that I must go to her allthough it was midnight and she could be intoxicated or on drugs, but who knows if it were just night blindness. My instincts took over and told me she was just having a bad day. I tapped at her window and she rolled down the window. I asked her if she would allow us to help her. She began sobbing again and said that her husband was in ICU and had collasped at work. He was only 35 and the doctors were still running tests on his heart, brain, etc. They lived in a small town an hour's drive away and she was unfamiliar with her surroundings and had no sleep in over 24 hours. She didn't have a cell phone and didn't know anyone to call for help regardless. I asked her if she could pop her trunk so that we could look for a spare tire. I then motioned for David to come. We found her spare and changed her tire. I let her pour her emotions out as david changed the tire. I wrote down the name of a discount tire store that she could go to in the morning. She offered to pay us for changing her tire. Of course we refused. I gave her a hug and I told her that everything would be Okay. She needed a hug to calm her nerves. We then escorted her back to the hospital which was only two city blocks away. I still think about her and I certainly hope that her husband recovered.

Hope everyone is having a good day today.

I have to admit my RAK story still makes me feel a little hurt. Mr. Z and I were at WalMart waiting to pick up a couple RX's. It was Christmas time and the store was incredibly busy. We decided to go over to the holiday aisle and check out the decorations. In the WalMart we were at the Christmas section was right next to the doors of the outdoor garden shop. As my hubby fascinated himself with all the light dispays, I noticed a little boy near the garden shop entrance. He couldn't have been more than 2 years old. He toddled unsteadily towards the doors that would have led him outside the main store. Knowing what kind of times we live in, I knew I had to stop him. I didn't want to pick him up and have anyone think I was going to harm him though. So I just stood in front of him. When he move right, so did I. Left..me too. I blocked him from the exit door, all the while smiling so he would think it was a game and not be afraid. After a few minutes of this a woman appeared from about three aisles over. She was frantically looking around, and finally caught sight of her son. She yelled his name and he turned, then she ran towards him and scooped him up. She gave me the meanest look and said "What were you doing with my son??" I tried to stay as calm as possible, knowing she was scared. I just said "I was trying to keep him from walking out the door.." she snarled "You stay away from him." and off she went. When I told Mr. Z, he wanted to go after her and explain--but I wouldn't let him. It was enough, in my heart, to know the child was ok.

As I think back on it, I probably should have had Mr. Z go look for a manager..but at the time I just wanted to prevent an immediate problem from occuring.

Off to read the posts!

It has been obvious from the beginning of this blog in January that the Owls are extremely kind people! I love your stories today filled with caring and compassion: EBJ, Lynn_D, iteach, MEK, Maureen, Dreama, Amicus, Sandie, Whabbear, KGirl, Goldie, Bono and Zona (that is really sad that the Mom didn't recognize that you were helping her child!) I respect that there is an understanding that when one gives, one receives....whether extrinsically or intrinsically. And what goes around comes around! And with that, I say thank you to the fellow that went into the bank and gave the twenty dollars to the teller that I had left in the ATM, which she was able to return to me when I ran frantically back to the bank. And I say thank you to the two guys that jumped out of their car and helped me push my stalled car out of the very busy intersection. And I say thank you to the booklady at the kids book store who moved mountains to find a special large print book for a student I support who is losing her sight and just wanted to read Charlotte's Web while she still could. And I say thank you to the woman at the hospice who didn't know me, who came and sat with me and helped me put my shoes on, when I was crying too hard to do that myself, minutes after my brother died.
There are amazing people in this world and this blog has helped remind me of that. Thanks, EBJ!

Good evening owls. I hope everyone is having a good day.

EBJ: I loved reading about the bird you reacued. That bird was lucky on two counts - First that it had "floating devices" and second that it had you and Mr. EBJ to rescue it. Thanks for sharing your story and prompting this TOTD.

Lovey: congrats on #1. I love your poor beat up owl.

Lynn D: Kudos to you for saving goats and cows.

iteach: good thought about doing RAKs for those close to us. It shouldn't be only for strangers.

Hey MEK, get to packing!

Vig: I used to work downtown where a lot of the homeless walked the streets asking for donations. My co-workers and I used to buy coupons from McDonald's and hand them out instead of money. I felt better about that than contributing to an addiction.

Dreama: I loved your poodle story.

Amicus: It is nice that you get see your rescues again and know they are well cared for.

Mo: Who knew that you could save a pup just by going out to dinner?

Turtle: That was a wonderful gesture and how nice that the pharmnacy recognized it.

Goldie: I have heard of people paying the toll for the car behind and how nice that you did a "pay it forward"

Bon'O: I like to let people who have just a few items go ahead of me at the gross-ry (thanks lynn d) when I have a full cart. And people have done it for me.

Zona: I think that was the Mom's guilt talking. At least you know you did the right thing.

Shout out to IBB, Joey and Bear just because.

Iteach: What is that about you and Zona bedding together??

Love you all but I have to fly to pick up Mr. Lynn D!!! Muuuwah!

Lovey Congrats on #1.

EBJ Thank you for the lovely story and the TOTD.

It's heartwarming to read everyone's wonderful stories. I have stories to share about helping animals, and I also try to show consideration to others and did give a stranger a couple of dollars while in line at the grocery store because they found they didn't have quite enough for their purchase. I have certainly been the recipient of many kindnesses from family, friends and neighbors. I think the most unexpected happened during the early 1970's. As many of you recall, my first marriage was extremely abusive. We were also on food stamps and if any of you have been in that position, you know that food stamps do not last for the entire month, especially when you have a baby to feed also.
When I went grocery shopping and went to the meat department, the butcher would come over and, no matter what meat I was looking at, would take his black marker and mark down the package to something rediculously low. It didn't matter if it was hamburger that he would mark down from $1.50 to 39 cents or a more expensive meat. The life I was living behind closed doors was very much a secret to everyone and being shown such kindness was absolutely precious to me. I will never forget him. Turtle, I'm sure that young mother feels the same about your kindness.

I volunteer at a homeless shelter to serve breakfast on Fridays but I don't count that as a RAK.

My son and I found a cute little Pug wandering in the parking lot of the mall one rainy day. We opened the car door and he ran right in. He had no collar so we put an add in the paper and the owners saw it and called us. They came over with a piture of them with the dog to show he was theirs and he went right to them when they called his name. They mailed us a gift card for the game store in the mall where we found him because we wouldn't take any money from them for the add, and my son was thrilled.

It does make one feel good to do something nice for someone and not expect anything in return.

I love all the RAK stories! I feel like LynnD..No wonder I adore all of you!
I just popped in for a minute. I came back from gross-ery shopping last night. I am a little shorty (5ft nothing). I parked in the garage and jumped out of my Jeep. I didn't see the frozen puddle of water. Bang!! down I went! Unfortunately I had my son's large chocolate milkshake with me! I called MrMary on my cell to please come out and help me get up! I must have looked real cute sitting there with chocolate everywhere including my hair, all over the floor& the in side pockets on my Jeep's door! Do you know how hard it is to take out about a cup of milkshake out of them pockets? Today I am sore and bruised! I am so glad I didn't break anything! There is a lot to be said for a "padded ass" LOL!!
I am uncomfortable sitting here typing, so I am off to get the ice packs and watch tv. Later....

I have a question. Does anyone know if Border Collie/Cocker Spaniel mixes can swim? Because if they can, then I have a comedian on my hands.

VIG: Sometimes you just leave me speechless.

ibebold said...

I have been pondering on this all day... and I can't think of any real big RAK... but I feel I do them every day... little things... friday in walmart(they just remodeled) an elderly man was turned around and couldn't find a grocery item he needed... I went and looked for it .. and came back and got him and told him what aisle it was on... I always help "Little " ladies reach the top shelf in the grocery store...
I let cars merge in .. or go ahead...
I worked in medical for a reason... I liked to help people... I still do it... in my own way...
I was a member of our local Eagle club...We did charity dinners and fundraisers all the time... It was soooo much fun putting on dances, poker runs, dinners...and all to give to this charaity or the other... in oct 2001 we had a bike show in the parking lot .. BBQ chicken dinner and dance.. and all the proceeds went to survivors of the pentagon.. we raised over 5000 dollars that day... our little club... and the bands donated their time... when we went to pay them , they wouldn't take the money...

I was a member there for 9 years..
work and stress got in the way of that...

I am going to do this little by little so in case I get foaded again, it won't hurt so much.

IBB: Since I'm tall, I always offer to get things off the top shelf for people, and they offer to help my poor ol' knees out by getting things off the bottom shelf for me! I like how that works out. Great story about the charity dinner for 9/11.

LYNND: First you are a goof (ie the bed remark)! Second, just think what the world would be like if everyone did little things for each other all the time. I don't think some people know how good it makes you feel.

ITEACH: I know, just by reading your post, what a wonderful teacher you are. And a sweet caring person too.

MO: I was so sure your story was going to end sadly..so cool that you checked in on the pup!

KGIRL: I loved how you didn't think twice about giving the pharmacy the money to pay for a stranger's RX.

GOLDIE: The way you found that dog, is the way we found our Rem. The only difference is his owners didn't come looking for him for three weeks. By then we had told the apt. managers about him and his original owners didn't want him anymore. Maybe the $300 security deposit had something to do with that? But we received the kindness in this case, as we had him for 13 1/2 years. Just lost him in July.

Sacbarb...I really like your idea of giving coupons for food to people that are asking for money. I think I may carry booklets with me when I am downtown of the city that Tink and I live in, where there is a huge problems for people who live on the streets.

MEK...I am not sure where you're going, but have a great time wherever it is you are heading!

Mary/MI...oh dear..hope your pride and your backside are healing!

Thanks MEK, IBB and Zona for your lovely comments about my last post.

And IBB.....thank you for the credit but the book lady finding a particular large print edition of Charlotte's Web for the girl loosing her sight was truly a random act of kindness on her part and had nothing to do with me. I just mentioned to her one day when I was in the store that I was looking for this book and why. A month or so later I got a phone call from her saying that she had looked solidly for weeks on the Internet and by contacting publishers to find this special book. She had found it in the southern US and she was able to get it to San Fransisco but couldn't get it to Canada from there. She remembered that her sister-in-law was going to a conference in San Fransisco so she asked her to go to the warehouse and pick it up....and it was way out of the SIL's way. The sister-in-law got it and brought it to Canada. When I went to pick it up, the booklady had gone to a lot of trouble to also find a Beanie Baby Wilbur (pig from the story) to go with the book and she would not take any money for any of it. She said my student's story broke her heart and she wanted to do anything she could to help this little girl enjoy this special book before she could no longer read with her eyes and would be reading Braille full time. When I took the book and Wilbur to my student, she was beyond thrilled! I took a picture of the student with the book and Wilbur - and the book seller lady made a special place for that picture in the store. It is still there a year later. It touches my heart again every time I go in that store! A random act of kindness at its finest!

goldie said...

Vig- you were the catalyst for that book lady's act of kindness- so it was in fact your act of kindness too!

Mary- glad the only thing hurt was the tushy and the milkshake.

Zona- I have people ask me all the time in the grocery store to get things off the top shelf for them. I'm 5'10 so its pretty easy. I have happily reached high and low for people. As a matter of fact, a little old man asked me to get him the last gallon of 1% milk at the store last Saturday. I had to get on my hands and knees and really reach for that baby! I'm sure my ass sticking out in the aisle was quite a sight!! Not 30 seconds later an elderly women asked me to reach to the back of the top shelf for some yogurt.

MEK- happy safe travels.

JODI- if you are reading this it is by now 2 am. So- HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLFRIEND!!!!!!!!!!

Vig: That book store lady is a true angel. I don't knowe if McDonald's still sells those coupon books but I felt much better about giving them out than giving money.

Hello to all in the owls nest

East Bay J
Thank you very much for todays blog, your RAK saved that birds life, so kudos to.

I have read all the comments, and think all of you are just fab!
A RAK should be what all of you commented about, just being yourself and helping another person!

MO
Thanks, perhaps it was RAK when I started the nest, however I never thought of it that way when I was doing it. I just knew in my heart that something had to be done, and a solution had to found.

Zonababy
What you did was out of the goodness of you heart. Shame on the mother for not seeing that, then again what mother would let their child roam in store? So it seems she can't see anything but herself!

night.owls.sb said...

I have done several RAK in my lifetime, as I am a giver, and a controller, when I see a situation that needs attending, I am right there.

I remember being in Target last year, and I was walking down a aisle just as this elder gentleman was about to fall. I ran so fast to help him and as I approached him he went down but I caught his head in my hand at least he did not hit his head on the floor. I told him to say calm and breathe, Not one person came over to help us. I finally had to scream at a random stranger to get some help, which he did. I stayed with him till the paramedics came, He thanked me as they were wheeling him away, I wanted to hold his longer, but they wisked him away.

I never found out what happen to him. All I know is that I was there for him and am very glad I was

I know where Joey is.I have an entire list of people that I am looking for now that my family life has settled down. Whew!

K'girl - I am driving and thanks for the "heads up" - I have gotten two speeding tickets in my life and one of them was the dreaded hiding on the merge ramp on a highway!! SO - i am ALWAYS careful.

Thanks for all the well wishes - we will be safe and I'll keep in touch as best I can...

Sure wish IBB could join us - but we understand!!!

Wow, I just have to share this.

the news just had a story about a RAK - what timing...

some people lost their camera and a gentleman found it - he took the disc to a Walgreen's - downloaded the pictures, saw that it was a young family - noticed the t-shirt she was wearing - so wrote the elementary school - that principal forwarded the letter to the school that she worked at and VOILA, she got her camera AND the pictures that he had printed. when they asked him WHY he went to such extremes to find her - he replied that he had lost everything that he owned in the recent "Aspen Fire" and that all he has left are memories - no pictures and he was determined to get this returned to the owner!!!!!!!

how sweet!!!!!!!!

okay - off to bed...
