For the Children

iteach is giving us
what we all asked for!

so read on~~

For the children

by iteach

One day last week in the owl's nest I mentioned that I have a new student who came with only the clothes on her back. She comes with a disturbing story along with many other students in my classroom.

Many owls personally e-mailed me, because they were interested in helping my new student. Therefore, that is why I am writing this blog. I thought I would mention some of her needs and where to send your thoughtful contributions.

I do want to make it clear that no one is under any obligation to donate. I'm trying not to put any peer pressure on anyone. I really hope I don't make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Your kind words and thoughts are alone priceless to me. They give me strength to keep trying to be a better teacher.

The following items could be in use for this student and any of my other economically challenged students.

Any type of school supplies

Toothbrushes

Stuffed animals

clothes size 7/8

any kind of children's books

None of the items need to be new (except the toothbrush) :O)

My school address is the following:

Dillon School
1901 8th Ave
Rock Falls, Il 61071
Attn: Mrs. Masini

Now I have a homework assignment for you. Could you please share your favorite activity that you ever did at school or that your child did at school that you thought was really cool? I'm trying to come up with more activities that are hands on and fun, also educational.

Good Morning Owls!

Waving Hi to Joey, Tinka, IBB

Iteach: What grade do you teach so we'll know the right age range for the school supplies and books? Thanks!

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Amicus and Ibebold. "Top of the mornin'" to you I should be saying.

Joey - Have fun with your Auntie. I bet her hair will look great.

Amicus- Thank you for your kind words.

Ibebold - I think you are sweet too.

Last but not least - "Top of the mornin'" to our Queen Carol.

Jodi said...

HOEY - Congrats on first!!! Glad you like the dp & the hammer!!!

TINKA - Good morning pretty lady!! Please give your Mom a hug from me.

AMICUS - I think ITEACH teaches 2nd grade.

IBHO!!! I just love typing that!! Top O' the morning to you!!! Do you have your green on today?

ITEACH - Great blog - and THANK YOU for making this happen. The kids and I are honored to help you out. We are going to make it a family project!!!

ITEACH - I think the "shoe box" reports on famous Americans that Jake just did was a great idea. If you would like for me to get copies of all the Americana songs, let me know. I'm sure the music teacher would be happy to pass them along. The other idea that I had for you was on dinosaurs. I don't know if you do a unit on them (and this actually was something my kids did in kindergarten - and so did I - since we go to the same school district), but along with learning about dinosaurs, we also constructed a LIFE SIZE dinosaur!!! It was made of paper - and painted by the whole class. The more I think about it - I think it was actually stuffed with newspaper!!! It may take over your classroom, but so much fun - and a great visual - to see how big these creatures actually were!!! If you would like the pattern, I can check with the teacher and see if I can hook you up.

I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT ST. PATTY'S DAY!!! CHEERS!!!

I posted this in Area 51, but it bears repeating!!! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ZONA & MR. ZONA!!! Enjoy your special day!!! :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WANT2!

Tink- I think Pepper would have a heart attack if I tried to put that on her. She barely likes to have the scarf from the groomer on. You should see her at Christmas when I put on her Santa Hat!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Goldie - Pepper doesn't like to dress up but Tango and Tia love the attention. I wonder where they get that from?

Lynn D said...

Happy St Pat's day Goldie!!

My dogs would not tolerate all of the gee gaws either! Hell I can't even put collars on them as our dog Piggy chews them off. Not just herself but the other two dogs also. The dogs just lay there and let her gnaw them off! LOL

I learned she was doing this after about 3 collar attempts and caught her chewing away on Seamus's collar! LOL I swear once she gets them off she has a look that says Be free, Be Free!

Good thing we live in the country and have a huge fenced yard!

Good Morning everyone,

Today I have 262 butterflies in my stomach and I don't know why.

I thought maybe it was my post, but I have done posts before and I wasn't nervous.

I'm not sure what it is , oh well.

Yes, I teach 2nd grade and they are all at P.E. right now.

Jodi, I'm definetly doing shoebox reports after seeing your son's on your myspace page.

Good Morning Owls!

Happy St. Paddy's Day!

PinkTink..Your page looks terrific..Congrats

iteach..One of the best projects I can remember doing as a kid involved a field trip...quite literally. We had been studying types of trees and rocks/minerals. We each had a notebook with the various pictures and names of the trees, rocks/minerals and went out to a nearby field to find them. We then brought our finds back to the classroom and made displays of the rocks and minerals by gluing them to cardboard and labeling them. We pressed or "rubbed" the leaves and labeled them. The results were displayed around the classroom. I'm not sure if the field was "planted" with the items we were to find, but all the kids found many of the examples with the teachers help. (I can remember him showing us how to scrape mica off a rock) The project was great fun and I remember a sense of pride when we finally got to take our displays home.

iteach, you know I am stuggling to come up with an idea for you. I agree with EBJ- it was a long time ago since I was there. Or my kids for that matter- but I will give it real thought. Most of my experience was with pre-schoolers since I had a day care for 10 years.

Happy Anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Zona!

HOJOey...Congrats on first! And on QOTD!! 700 friends? WOWZA! I can't keep up with the few I have...you must be a busy computist!! (is that a word? LOL)

HoZONA...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you and Mr. HoZONA!!

ITEACH...what an inspiring blog. Your students are so lucky to have you as their teacher and mentor.

I was thinking that maybe you could have the kids make a sort of scrapbook of the rest of the year. Maybe on Friday, they can spend a part of the class making a page of something they learned or accomplished that week. They can color, paint, glue stuff regarding the week. Then at the end of the year, they can take it home and share it with their family.

It has been so many years since I was a student and I have no kids, so not much help from me!

Have a great (and safe) St. Patrick's Day!

iteach said...

Maureen I love your idea! I will start now, but next year we will start at the beginning of the year.

I have so many children every year who need to express themselves through art.

Maureen said...

ITEACH...how many students do you have? I was thinking that maybe you can save the twist ties from the gross-ery (heheheh, Lynn) store and then use them to bind the pages together after you punch a hole in each sheet. Just make sure they use the same size paper! If I have any stickers laying around, I will send them to you. I don't know that I do, but I will look!

WANT2SLEEP...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

iteach...wow..what a blog! And what a teacher you are! The world needs more like you!

I have some books and such to send to your student. But does anyone know the rules around sending things, new and used, from Canada to the US?

My teacher brain is on spring break right now and seems to be in a dormant state. When my brain returns to normal, I think I have some project ideas that you might like.

Happy St. Patrick's day everyone! Hope you are wearing your green today!

Lynn D said...

HI Mo!!!

Vig you can send them just fine! You will have to fill out some custom forms however.

Because you are sending these for Iteach's class you can mark them as gifts! You will have to list on the form what is in the box.

This is what I have to do when I send packages to Canada.

Hope that helps!

Still thinking Iteach! LOL

Anonymous said...

Lynn_D...thank you...that helps a lot. I thought it might be a bigger deal to send things, but that sounds easy! Thanks for the help!

Anonymous said...

iteach....do you use music in your class when the students are having free time or doing art, etc. I know some students get into sensory overload mode so isn't done in all classrooms, but I have some great CD's I could burn for your class if you are able to use music in the background.

ibebold said...

VIG-
I am looking at a customs form now... as long as you mark them.. Return to sender... and GIFT...
you wont have a problem..
but you will need to list each item separately...
But you can lump like
(3) books.....
(2) shirts..
On like that...
Hope this helps...

DreamaTexas said...

JOHOEY
congrats on #1. Dude you have too much energy. Thanks for including my name in your bulletin. I love to be of help.
This is a kind idea and an easy one to get involved with for kids.
Stuffed animals, school supplies, books & tooth brushes can be purchased at the Dollar Store. I have to go over there today to get my office supplies so count me in.I'll look around. If you don't live near a Dollar Store then perhaps Big Lots or Family General store.
Also if a person is very much in need there are organizations that you may ask for help for anyone such as the Moose Lodge, your church or any church, the Women's Shelter can direct women to help agencies. Also if it is an extreme case like an expensive operation for a child then banks will set up a donation box and the media can air it. I used to work a lot of charity drives and those were our top 4 sponsers.Even the motorcycle cops club helped a lot.

goldie said...

I have a comment on shipping. I don't know if this is the same in Canada or not- but, when I was shipping books to and from London the post office gives you a break on postage. As long as it is all books, then you get a cheaper rate.

Amicus said...

Zona: Happy Anniversary to you and Mr. Z!

I am so sorry to hear this. My childhood friend's Mom is also at stage 4 cancer. They are on a cruise right now so that she can live out her final days with wonderful memories. I hate cancer. It has taken half of my family. My Mom survived it. There is a blood test that you can all take that will show if you have the inherited cancer gene.it is something that I am just now learning about and will be part of my next blood work.

Joey: Glad you made it to the top! (LOL)! BTW...does your lap-top have Vista as the operating system? Our technology coordinator (I am her "assistant") said that she is not very happy with Vista and had TWO laptops with Vista crash on her! I hope it's not the case for you!

Scirish: Sorry to hear about your friend.

Zona: Happy Anniversary!

Just-lin: Thanks for congratulating me on my paper! I was very happy! (I work best under pressure...unfortunately)!

iteach: Love your post!

I noticed a couple names I'm not familiar with, so hello to you as well!

Ok...now, for the blog comment:

I honestly can not think of any project in grade school that stood out in my mind, so I will use my daughter as an example.

One of my favorite things she did was in art (they have a GREAT art teacher...and that is my "thing" as well)!

In second grade, they did "scratch-art" but made their own paper first!

They took a plain sheet of paper and various colors of crayons (not black) and made colorful patterns on the sheet. When the entire paper was colored, they took a black crayon and while pressing very hard, colored over the colors with the black paper. Then they took a tooth pick and scratched out a picture! It turned out very cool! (Scratch art paper is very expensive)!

Hey, like I said, iteach, I will be very happy to burn some of my favorite CDs for you too!

oops...I meant to say color over the colors with the black "crayon" (not black paper)!

iteach~ what a great blog~ I love the picture/scrapbook idea. Do you have a digital camera that you can use? Back in the olden days when my kids were in second grade, they made scrapbooks with snapshots of the kids throughout the year. As part of our school supply list, we had to send in a disposable camera. Let me know if you are going to do this so I can send money also to help with developing the pictures~ I'm going to put up one of my daughters pages from second grade on myspace.

Hoey~ congrats on first from WhoreTina~ :)~

Goldie, Jennifer, Tina, and Grandma Moses - Nice to see you tonight.

I learned something today. Think before you post. I think I am not going to live down my 'marching post'.

DWTS is over. I don't know who I like yet. I am off to bed. Tomorrow, down come the St. Paddy decoration in my mom's room and I will decorate it for Easter. That means another busy day ahead. Hope you all had a great St. Patrick's Day. Take care. Stay safe.
Love, Tinka

Good evening Feathered Friends!

I hope you all had a fun and safe day today.

ITEACH...I'm glad you liked the scrapbook idea. And I loved how Tina suggested taking the kids pictures, too. Maybe take it on their first day of class, and then take one the last week for the last page. Hopefully the kids will enjoy seeing how they changed over the year.

JenHOfer...congrats on your paper. And I saw what you did to Ronnie's page! Clean up in aisle 4!!

ZoHOnababy...glad you had a wonderful anniversary.

LOL,I missed that e-mail somehow. I'll go look in my old mail. My cousin and their kids send me so many forwarded jokes that I can easily miss a message. I need to get my head set hooked up so I can chat with you.
Someone e-mail me and tell me who got votedoff of DWTS. I got distracted and missed the finale.
ALERT: Pupyy Love was a Trojan worm and not a real person so I hope no one allowed them on Myspace.
G'nite all.

Maureen: Ronnie wasn't the only one who got the "Lucky Charms" surprise! I wasn't sure who would think it was funny and who would be offended! I hope no one who received it took offense (because I thought it was funny...I giggled about it all night)! Hope those who received it giggled too! (I love to laugh)!

It's still dark here so I don't know what the weather is like today. I hope it is warm and sunny. I think that is wishful thinking however.

I am going to wait 5 more minutes for the new blog to go up and then I am going to get some work done early.
