Flowers

by iteach

March is here, hooray! When March comes I think of spring and when I think of spring I think of flowers. I just love flowers. Every time I look at them and smell them my shoulders totally relax. I have always had a dream of having a beautiful flower garden that I would be proud of and that it would be blooming from April to September.

I have started that dream, but I am not proud of it. I always have good intentions, but my flower garden turns out sad every year. Now that I'm done reproducing I want to put a lot more attention into my yard.

Can you help me?

I would love to hear your thoughts about what you do with your garden.

Now if you do not have a green thumb, please do not dismiss this post.

I would love to hear what type of flowers you love and that would help me get ideas for my garden.

I don't have a green thumb either, so please share anything. I can't wait to hear about your favorite flowers or any gardening tips.

ITEACH: I am awful at growing anything. I try, I really do, but plants of every kind just do not like me. I like to think it's because I live where it gets so hot. But I see beautiful flower gardens everywhere. I can grow weeds though--boy am I good at that! ;)
My favorite flowers are Daffodils. I also like Gardenias.
Good morning to everyone! Now I have to get some sleep. Hope you all have the best day!!

First of all my condolences, I was unaware until a lil while ago. And I am sorry that the drama is going on. My family can be similiar and I don't wish that on anyone...

And it was great fun taking you all on the road with me. All the text msgs, myspace msgs and blog interaction kept me laughing~!

I love iris's and protea's.

I don't plant a flower garden as the flowers grow naturally in Hawaii. Gardenia, Plumeria, Ginger, Puakinikini, Tuberose....

Even at night you can tell what you are passing by the fragrance.

So I grow herbs instead. Basil, Dill, Rosemary, Thyme and Cilantro.

Zona, way to go!

Hi K-girl!

I love daffodils, lilies and tulips. My new house has no bulbs, so I will be planting this year.

My favorite flower is the hibiscus. I have some growing in pots which I will be planting soon.

K-girl, one of my best friends who lives on Maui has beautiful plumeria and hibiscus growing all over her front yard. I saw fallen plumeria flowers laying all over the grass, I was just amazed.

I've tried many times over the year to grow plumeria, but have never been successful.

Have a nice day!

ZONA: Congratulations on #1... A bouquet of flowers to you and to ITEACH for today's TOTD

ITEACH: I love flowers too. My plantable space is usually taken up with vegetables but I do a lot of container gardening with flowers. I can get a lot of pleasure from container flowers, although hanging pots have never been my forte.

Favorite flower of all time...Sunflower. They follow the light and make room for each other to have that light.. I just love that. I also really like messy looking wild flower gardens.

When my ex and I bought the house I'm in there was an exquisite french garden in the front yard. Well, the neighborhood for kids is all about front yard play so when he left I immediately sold the front foliage and put in sod. Nearly killed the "poor" ex but the kids love it. We even have teatherball in the front yard. Its small but fun.

I am looking forward to checking in on other folks posts.

Good Morning all!

Zona: First Way to go!!!

Kgirl: Glad to hear you are safe and arrived at your destination!!!

Iteach: I love flowers and used to love gardening. Our old house I grew everything. When we moved out here I even got a job in a garden center and worked there for 5 years as the hardgoods buyer and cashier manager. I was the northwest lawn expert for our area.

Long story short. Gardening became a chore!! LOL Our yard is an acre and for the life of me I can't seem to get it together and figure out what to plant where here! It seems like such a huge task!

But some of my favorite things to grow are Sunflowers!!! The take such little care!

Herbs: I love to grow them. They are so easy it is like instant gratification! And they have so many uses. Lavendar is one of my favs!

Lavatera or Mallow tree: Great Shrub bush with beautiful blooms.

Rhodys our state flower are wonderful in our area!

Hydrangea: I think this is probably one of my all time favorites as they have such beautiful blooms that are fantastic to dry!

I avoid Roses like the plague!!!

EBJ: Sweet Peas are a part of the pea family and they sometimes require a pea innoculant that you soak them in before planting. That maybe why they aren't gowing for you. You can get the innoculant in any garden center.

Well, If I had to depend on what I could grow to eat, I would surely starve!

I love gardens and have some friends that are gardening genius's. I adore ornamental grasses interspersed with flowers. It makes the garden look wild and free, sort of like a "country cottage". Sweet Williams are my favorite flower smell and they are cute little flowers too.
The times I attempted to grow a garden, I tried to mix heights and blooming times so that there was always something going on. Adding accents, like an old chair with some potted flowers, an old plow and some cool stones/rocks was great fun...having everything get eaten or die was not....

ZONA, yay! 1st! hoot hoot

ITEACH, thanks for the blog TOTD.
and ginormous {{{hugs}}} to you.

I have a terrible brown thumb. The only flowers that work for me are potted impatience. I usually buy a couple of flats, have my friend put them in pots for me (I don't like handling the dirt...there may be bugs in it!) and I set 'em and forget 'em! When it rains, they get watered and for some reason, they last all summer!! I never pluck off the dead growth, either. I also buy the cheap flats from a deep discounter! I buy the purply ones. I am drawn to purple flowers.

I also seem to get lucky with pots of basil and chives (garlic chives are my favorite!)

Lilacs are my all time favorite to look at and to enjoy the perfume they emit.

I killed bamboo!!!

Good Morning all Early Owls - There are too many to mention. I started with answering messages first and I usually do it the other way around. Speaking of first, congratulations my daughter Zona for sitting in that position. You will always be my #1 cyber daughter, you know that.

I am such a flower lover. I can't think of one I don't love. In the springtime when the snowdrops and crocus pop up I am so exited. Then the daffodils are everywhere and I think they are my favourite. Then the tulips and I get a thrill from those. I could bore you and go on but I won't.
My son gets about 50 large white planters started on my birthday in April each year and finishes them by spending all of Mother's Day here. The plants and his work are my present each year. My flowers are my babies all summer. Geraniums, Marigolds and petunias are the main flowers in the planters. (He plants dahlias and sweet peas along the fence and by the house.) I tend to them until Fall when they are put away for the winter. The planters that outline the patio and grass are watered by the sprinkler system. The ones on my deck (about 12 long ones) I water with a watering can. Just writing this gets me excited to think this will all happen again in just a little over a month. Good luck Iteach, I wish I could give you some advice but I would probably have no flowers if it weren't for my son.

Good Morning Owls!

I love to think about Spring and flowers. We were teased with gorgeous weather last week and now we are back in the rain and cold, which is why I think I caught this darn cold. I am feeling better though, so thank you to all of your kind wishes on MySpace. It made me feel so good to know that someone was thinking about me.

I love flowering bushes, especially hydrangeas and Butterfly Bush. I am not good at planting individual flowers, but bushes/shrubs give me a large quantity of flowers and are easier to care for.

I also grow culinary herbs and keep them close to the house so that I can easily run out and snip something when I am cooking. The one herb that I plant far from my house, even though I LOVE it, is Lavender. With small kids playing outside, I have to be very careful what will attract bees and it never fails that the lavender is swarming with bees.

When someone sends me flowers, I love to get a bouquet of daisies. To me they are just the happiest flower. Roses are nice, but daisies are fresh... and they make me happy. My husband should be happy that I am such a cheap date!

OK...going to blow the nose. Hope you all feel well. Stay healthy and have a great day!

Good Afternoon Owls!

Iteach: Thanks for brightening my mood with thoughts of Spring!

I love flowers and other plants, but sadly, they don't love me. No matter what I try, they die.

When I bought my house, the lady who owned it before me had planted beautiful rose bushes. I was thrilled when they kept blooming every year without any help from me. Then one Spring, we had too much rain, and they got some type of disease from the ground being too saturated. I researched the problem on the Internet and did everything I had read, but they still died.

I also love receiving beautiful floral arrangements, but unfortunately, I don't get to enjoy them, because I have to hide them from my cats. They eat flowers and plants and then get sick. That's why all the floral arrangements and plants in my house are silk.

A warm, friendly Hello to everyone in the nest! Happy American Idol Tuesday! :)

Oooh can I be Flowers Grandmommy? Well, not yet - still waiting!!!!

I love gardening and I'm pretty good at it, if I do say so myself (which I just did). But it is still -25 or so with about 6 feet of snow on the ground, so I just can't wrap my mind around flowers right now. I do have a 25 year old hibiscus tree in my living room (which is now too big to get OUT of my living room) that blooms all year around - so that keeps me feeling tropical inside the house. Turtle - I so envy you. The flowers and the scents in Hawaii are heavenly!

Iteach great topic. I love flowers. The grocery store sometimes has bouquets for $9.99 that I will buy. I'm not sure what the flowers are called but they are very pretty. Purple, pink, white and yellow daisy looking flowers.

My mum has lilac bushes at her house, except they are more like trees now. The house is over 140 years old so I think the lilac bushes are pretty old too. She had some really old rose bushes too up by the side of the house but when they started to appear behind the sofa inside the house she ripped them out. It was a shame cause they were very pretty small white and pink roses. My Dad had daffodils all around the front of his house.

I personally like tulips. I have been trying to find a layout for myspace with tulips but I haven't been sucessful yet...at least not one that I like.

I believe that a gallon US is equal to 4 liters here in Canada and just last Saturday I paid $7.11 for a 4 liter jug of milk. Cereal is usually $4.00 at least.

Spreading my wings and making a smooth landing on the nest.

Good afternoon to everyone!

I don't have a green thumb, but love flowers. My favorites are lavender, lilacs, and blue hydrangeas. I have to leave the gardening to someone else because I kill everything. The only thing I can grow well is the Jade plant. They grow so slowly, I always start with yery old and mature plants. They're so asian looking, do they grow over there?

Wabby,How is Huz's hand doing? I hope the worst part is over for him. AND, I can't believe you brought up F M (take those initials anyway you want. lol)

Since I don't do gardening, but enjoy flowers so much, I buy those cheap, fresh bouquets for myself at the grocery store a couple of times a month. To Ronnie, With love, From Ronnie. Vain, No, just love flowers.

Bon, great lunch..thank you, and also your sweet message.

Going to read some more, and maybe learn about gardening.
BTW, I'm leaving a huge vase of tulips on the dinner table, hoping someone will be serving tonight.

xoxo to everyone

Zona, Congrats on first. Hello to all who have posted already...too many to mention individually. I am anxious to read the blogs I missed. I will take me forever, I'm sure.

I read yesterday's blog and the jokes cracked me up. I don't have a joke, but I can add to Bon's ponderings: Why do they call themn apartments when they are all stuck together?

I am not much of a gardener either. And Mo, I killed bamboo too and I wasn't even trying. My favorite flowers are yellow roses and anything purple. I have gardenia's planted on the walkway to the front door, but I have only gotten a few blooms on them in the 5 years they have been there.

I hope you all have a wonderful day. I am going to try to catch up on a couple of days blogs.

SacBarb!! So glad you're back! :)

Amicus, that wascally Whabbear handed out Snickers bars to us as we arrived at his BABB last year.

I was not around much when "all that" was going down, so didn't know what the significance of what the Snickers meant. But I was enlightened!

The talk about flowers has prompted me today to start looking for bulbs, lilac, wisteria, and hibiscus!

Our local Walmart has beautiful plants, last year I bought several gorgeous, unique hibiscus. Their prices are so reasonable, too.

We are having unbelievably wonderful weather, but supposed to rain this weekend. Boo.

I love reading about flowers. They lighten my soul.

Amicus - Yes I have a good son. He has spent every Mother's Day with me since I was 'carrying him', that's 43 Mother's Days. He has never missed one. He spends the whole day working on my pots and then we have a barbecue with all my kids. I have to brace myself for the fact that it may be different this year as it is the first time his wife is also a mother. Time will tell but I think I have had my share of him and feel very blessed.

sacBarb - Looking forward to hearing all about the wedding.

ZonaBaby - Thanks for sending me Season 2 of Ghost Whisperer. What a wonderful early birthday present. You have no idea what that gesture meant to me. I watched the first episode as soon as I got it this morning. It was great. You are a wonderful daughter.

VIG - I hope your cold is better and that you are back to work today. This lovely warm spring sunshine must be helping you.

Amicus - Thanks for the help with the picture notification. I would never have figured it out. I am determined however to do my own Easter myspace layout. I will try to keep my questions to you at a minimum.

I am on my way to the Vet to get Tango's annual shots, then for a walk. I will get home, eat and leave for my computer meeting. I will have to catch up later on all the posts.

I hope everyone has a great evening.
Love, Tinka

Good afternoon Owlettes.

iteach Lovely blog today. Thank you.

Zona Congrats on being first today.

I'm afraid I am not a gardener. I certainly enjoy looking at them but I don't want to be the one on my hands and knees planting them. My husband used to enjoy puttering around in the yard. I have gardeners that come twice a month and mow the lawns and tidy up the flowers and bushes. I have a Wisteria in front of the house that I really love but it only has blooms for a few weeks a year.

All that talk about Snickers (I don't know the back story on that) reminded me that I have some in the freezer, left over from Halloween. Everybody help yourselves to some Snickers or Twix.

SacBarb Welcome back! I can hardly wait to hear more about the wedding. Hopefully you'll have some pics to share.

Hey everyone!

I just love what everyone has said and I have so many comments to say. However, I have to deal with my mom and grandma right now. So I will be back later. My mom and grandma are fighting and I have to go make sure they don't do anything stupid.

Well, I didn't get to run my errands. I opened my door to leave, and much to my surprise, Mother Nature had dumped several inches of snow on my driveway. We've had beautiful Spring weather the past few days so I wasn't expecting to see a Winter Wonderland.
I guess I should watch the weather report more often. LOL!

I did walk across the street and get a Snickers Dark bar though so that should tell you how much I was craving one. ;)

Tinka: Feel free to ask as many questions as you need to. There's no "minimum" requirement. :) I know you're going to be so excited and proud of yourself when you get that layout added.

JustLin: I hired a lawn service too. I would rather be outside working in the yard than inside cleaning, but my allergies made the decision for me. An hour spent mowing the grass causes me to spend days recovering from sinus congestion. It's worth it to pay someone else to do. :)

MEK in AZ said...

Ronnie - before I "disconnect" - I also, am sick of looking at cactus and rock gardens - sadly, that is what our HOA demands that we all have in our front yards!! BORING. but we can do whatever we want to to the backyard!!!

I still can't grow flowers though..

Amicus - sorry you got dumped on by the snow - I wish I could play in the snow right now!! :-)

okay - see ya'll later...

Tinkatia said...

Amicus - Thanks so much. What would I do without you? I feel like I am entering High School - nervous but excited about all I am about to learn. I just returned from the Vet. Tango has a couple of lumps to be removed. The Vet is sure they are benign but I will be glad when April 4th is over. That would have been my dad's 99th birthday. I still miss him so. I think my mom has forgotten him and that's sad.

Iteach - I hope you are inspired to grow a beautiful garden. You must post pictures next summer.

Nowmercy - ((((Hugs))))) just because.

VIG - Hope your cold is gone for good.

Whabbear - Thanks for the message telling me Huz was going to work today. I hope he isn't too sore.

ZonaBaby - I watched episode one and it was fantastic. I wish I could skip my computer meeting tonight and just watch GW.

Ronnie - Thank you for the comment. I am going to send you instructions on how to send a picture with it. You will find it it easy.

I am going to Watch American Idol and then leave for the meeting. Have a great night Little Owls.

RonnieGirl said...

As I shared earlier in the day, I don't garden too well, but I do have a short story about one of my attempts to spruce0up our back yard.
Lots of shade producing trees made me think to plant caladium back there. The man at the nursery told me to put a tablespoon of 'bone-meal' in each hole before I put the bulb in. So, I put or dog, Maryjane in the house, and did my thing. I worked hard and planted fifty bulbs. I then went in the house to shower and let Maryjane out, where she then proceeded to dig up every single bulb. I wish someone would have told me that dogs would do that. Lynn d, did you ever hear of anything like that when you worked at the nursey?

Mek, Nothing like the HOA. I'm sure it's lovely. Damn, Ronnie is forever putting her foot in her mouth. Sorry, Mek.

Tina, Who is the lady in your avatar? Is she a family member?

Bob'O, Thanks for looking for me.

Have a good evening, and I'm off to see Bobby Flay do another throw-down.

RonnieGirl said...

Sorry for all the above typo's.

I love roses and baby's breath too,but they aren't easy to grow.

I have 2 hybrid tea rose bushes.
I'm waiting to see if they live this year.
We moved and I wasn't leaving them, so I dug them up and replanted when I shouldn't have...oh well..we'll see.

WELCOME BACK SACBARB!!

PART I

I have made notes of all your favorite flowers and I'm sharing them with Mr. Iteach. I can't wait to share with you all our finally garden plan.

Zona - loves daffodils and gardenias

Turtle- loves iris's and protea's

East Bay J- loves daffodils, lilies, tulips, bisiscuses, and sweet peas

Tina- Loves wildflowers

MEK- adores white daisies and purple flowers

Nowmercy- is crazy about sunflowers!!

Lynn D.- also loves sunflowers, hydrangea and lilacs

Scrish- enjoys sweet williams

Joey- Milk here cost $3.89 a gallon and we go through a gallon every two days.

Maureen- really likes lilacs and purple flowers

Okay I will be back in a bit for part II

Amicus said...

I just finished watching American Idol, and I thought it was the best show so far this season. Most of the guys were great! My favorite tonight was David Cook, but I voted for David Archuleta, because I want him to win. He is such a sweet kid and so talented!

I'm guessing the media's hot topic tomorrow though is going to be Paula. She was whacked out tonight! She could barely complete a sentence.

My aunt called earlier and told me we got 11 inches of snow today. It came down fast and heavy, and I was in La-La-Land totally unaware there was a blizzard going on outside. LOL!

Tinka: Is Tango having surgery on the April 4th to remove those lumps? If so, why is the vet waiting a month? Since he thinks they're benign, I guess it won't hurt to wait, but I'm just curious why he isn't going ahead and doing it now.

Maureen said...

I can't believe it.. I just voted 5 times for David Archuleta and 5 times for Jason Castro! I'm such a dork!!

SACBARB, It was so nice to see your post! Welcome home! Let us know when pictures are uploaded.

CAROL, where are you tonight?? I hope everything is ok.

MEK, in honor of your ribbon purchase, I organized all my ribbons earlier! Took an hour and a half! Paper is next...OY!!

iteach said...

PART II

Jax- I'm not all the way through the comments, but so far you only say "I love flowers".

Tinka- loves many kinds, but daffodils and tulips have a special place in her heart.

Glynis- Loves hydrangens & the butterfly bush. She also enjoys daisies.

Barbara- Is another daffodil lover and appreciates lilacs. Thanks for the great gardening tips too.

Whabby- You made me laugh so hard that my husband ran downstairs, because he thought I was screaming.

More to come.........

Bon'O said...

iTeach~~PEONIES if you want some powdery pinks, deep burgundy reds or magenta!! (LOL'd at the milk price for Joey amongst the flowers)

RonnieGirl~~your post reminded me of the year I spent the better portion of a day selecting dozens of unique (and darn pricey!)specialty bulbs for my mom, brought them to her home in their individual plastic baggies with instructions, left them on the patio table for planting the next day. Her always well-behaved Pomeranian ATE almost all of them! I was too afraid he was going to die to worry about the wasted time and money.

iteach said...

PART III

Bon- Thank you so much for the breakfast. I love how you incorporated all those flower names.

Amicus- I made a mental note to send you silk floral arrangements.

CG- I can't wait for that grandbaby to come.

Shirley- You are so right tulips are beautiful. Do you have a favorite color?

Ronnie- loves lavendar, lilacs, & blue hydrangeas. We have a lot of owls that enjoy purple flowers, cool!

More to come......

JoeyfromSC said...

Pansies(pansy's?)LOL

(Let the jokes begin...hehe)

RonnieGirl said...

Joey~~
You're a brave soul. I take it you don't like those tall hairy cactus that are lurking in the desert.

Now, that's some heavy duty plant.

iteach said...

PART IV

Sacbarb- loves yellow roses which made me think of my mom. She adores them too.

JL- I don't think I have ever seen wisteria. I'm going to look it up.

Lovey- Loves black eyed Susans and shasta daisies. I do have the susans already growing, they are very easy to grow. I love them.

Bon- Just shouted out her favorites are peonies and I do love their smell.

More to come......

Hi Everyone! I just got back from meeting two of the funniest sweetest people..MEK and BEAR!! There was a conference here that WHABBEAR attended and MEK drove up from Southern AZ. They came over to my house and after my pup Nikki got done molesting them, we went out to dinner. It was great! Both were so nice and easy to talk to.

MEK brought her camera and will post the pictures. I was not thrilled to see my fat ol' self though and will probably spend quite a bit of time hiding under the bed. JODI get out the comforter please. This was my first owl's blog meeting, and I as lucky--it was a two-fer.

iteach said...

Oh, Zona you are such a lucky duck!!!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Iteach I like pastel colors...purple, yellow, pink. I don't care for the verigated colors that much. I don't like red by it's self either...maybe in an arrangement with white ones.

Bon'O said...

ZONA~~YAY for you!!! I thought that just might happen...an itenary here, a hint dropped there. Deliriously, jealously happy for you!! and there will be NO hiding under the bed. Heck, I'm not skinny enough to fit under the bed. Buck up, Buttercup! :o)

Remember, BABB #2 is at my house on Aug. 30th so all are welcome to come.

ITEACH - Great blog. I love flowers, but so do all the rabbits in my yard. They have managed to eat or kill about all the bulbs that I have planted over the years. I now just keep several pots of Geraniums in the front along the driveway and sidewalk. I also love wax begonias - and have a couple pots of them. Two years ago for mother's day the hubby and kids surprised me with planting some things around the mailbox - can't think of what is out there, but I haven't killed it yet!!!

sacBarb said...

Hey MEK, Bear, and Zona - How great that you all could meet up. Zona are you going to come to the BABB??? Maybe you can talk Mr. Zona into coming to CA in August to visit his sis (is that right?) in Grass Valley. EBJ doesn't live too far from there.

Turtle - I coming to Oahu on March 26. I am hoping we can meet up for a drink or dinner or ???? This seems to be the month for owls to meet up!

Jodi said...

ZONA - lol @ getting a 2fer!!! So glad you, MEK, and WHABBY were able to get together!!! And only your dog would molest the guests!!!

TINA - Been thinking about you today - I'm sure everything was great :)

SACBARB - Welcome home!!! We've missed you. Can't wait to see pics from the wedding.

Coffee is on and I brought some blueberry muffins today. Enjoy!!!

JUST finished a draft of my slides for tomorrow..!

Yep, owls, meeting Zona (and MEK again) was a blast! One thing's for sure... when you meet up with fellow owls, there certainly isn't ANY lack of topics to converse about! LOL!

Zona: I enjoyed the crotch-sniffing, BTW... hope it didn't make you too embarrassed! LOL again!

SacBarb: Welcome back! We've been keeping the light on for ya!

Amicus said...

ROFL at Whabby's sniffing remark!

Zona, sweetie, I sure hope you weren't embarrassed. Nikki was just trying to establish dominance. From her point of view, MEK and Whabby were new members of the pack, and she was showing them who the leader is. She definitely is an alpha dog! :)

Glad you all had a chance to meet and enjoy each other's company!

Mary/MI: Poison Ivy is miserable! It's been about 15 years since I've had a case of it, but I used to get it bad when I was a kid. That would make me stop doing yard work too.

Jodi: Thanks for the muffins! :)

Jodi said...
