Body Wisdom

by nowmercy

(For BonSis)

The other day BonO asked how I found massage as a profession after being a Parole Officer and then a Project/Asset Portfolio Manager.

Well, in my childhood I would visit my Great Gramma..a “jack” Mormon who had left the church because the local bishop would not let her leave her second and abusive husband. She moved back to her farm in a little town east of Salt Lake (Henefer). Lillian was the local herbalist and midwife. The Mormon women kept coming to her every Sunday and she would dole out advice, herbs and concoctions. Funny, but each lady always needed a small glass of “medicinal tincture” aka dandelion wine. Anyway, she would set me on her kitchen counter and put a stool in front of me. The next woman waiting to see her would sit there and I would be instructed to rub her shoulders. Graygramma (my name for her) would tell me “ Listen to your fingers, they know where to go” or “Follow the lights in your fingers dear”. So, from age 4 to 7 she guided me and I listened to her.

Many years and careers later I began receiving massage from a masterful therapist. She was truly a healer and helped me re-enter my body with mercy and knowledge. I will never forget our sessions and her example of extreme regard for the body.

During that time I met a gal who had sold her share of big massage school because of carpal tunnel. She taught me a lot, and I began apprenticing with her. Later I trained as a restorative breath worker. I just loved putting my hands on people. I loved being where I belonged. Where I longed to be. I did subsequent apprenticing with a master Rolfer and others and trained formally and took great anatomy classes. I also trained in mind/body psychotherapy in a non violent client centered approach. It blew my mind to get this approach of gentle listening to body, mind and the unconscious.

All of this (19 years) has led me to believe that the body has wisdom and no pain is an expression of anything but that wisdom. Pain is a signal of something immediately wrong or of something that has been compensated for, for too long. I have learned that respecting the wisdom of the bodies I see, and appreciating the people in those bodies can bring about the space for healing to occur. I love this “work”.

OK I have to listen to Josh Groban and the blind guy.....

Bon'O said...

Whew..I made it through Makeover, and don't think I missed anything on the Grammys. Another hour & 1/2 of just Grammys. Anyone want me to bake a batch o' cookies, replumb your bathroom, grade some papers? Zona, still got laundry to fold? I feel like a slacker, single-tasking now.

sacBarb said...

Bon: Too funny. I didn't watch Makeover, but now I have to watch Brothers and Sisters. Love that Rob Lowe. I'll see how the switching goes.

Bon'O said...

Lovin' me some Alicia Keys!!! Can I still be a card-carrying Soul addict and admit I can't bear Stevie Wonder? Never could...think the last thing I liked was Little Stevie Wonder's Finger Poppin' Time.

sacBarb said...

I have never been a big Stevie Wonder fan either.

Talk about a night of being overstimulated. Now Rhapsody in Blue (Herbie Hancock & ???) is on. All my life, Rhapsody in Blue has been and always will be my answer to the trivia question..."If you were stranded on a desert island for the rest of your life with only one piece of music, what would it be?"

Whenever/if ever anyone reads this, I'd love to know...what's YOUR answer?

sacBarb said...

Bon: I LOVE Rhapsody in Blue too. It reminds me of Genen Kelly when he danced to it in that movie which I can't remember the name of right now.

Zona said...

SACBARB: Was that "An American In Paris"???

BON'O: I thought your question about music would be an easy question to answer..but it isn't. You have to consider the replay value. Hmmm. Have to think about this. I like the Strauss waltzes..but could I listen to them forever?

Finished the laundry! I left when there were 127 posts..what the heck happened? Well, off to read them all!

sacBarb said...

Zona: Yes, I think that was the movie.

Bon'O said...

Hey there ZonaBabeeeee! Been missin' ya. w00t, w00t for another Grammy for Amy Winehouse. Now if only she can get her life back and do that U.S. tour with my Paolo Nutini! See, I truly am schizo....Leonard Bernstein doing Rhapsody in Blue and Amy/Paolo doing Rehab...both faves.

Zona said...

BON'O: I didn't watch very much of the Grammy's..just Tina Turner and Beyonce. Looks like I can get a complete run down here in the nest though! Love the running commentary!

JOEY: Welcome!

Zona said...

I guess saying "I didn't watch very much.." when I watched five minutes of The Grammy's must be the understatement of the whole day--ya think? ;)

Bon'O said...

Zona ~~ It's actually been quite entertaining this year...quality performances, no dazed & confused speeches.

sacBarb said...

There was also a lot more entertainment than the handing out of Grammies

Bon'O said...

S/B ~~ How was Brothers & Sisters? I have to catch up online. Love that show. Still new episodes? or Reruns?

sacBarb said...

Bon: Tonight was a new episode. That's why I wanted to watch it. It was good.

Zona said...

BON'O: I'm just not a big awards show person..I loved the Oscars when I was a kid--but I don't even like to watch them much anymore. I don't know why. Just weird I guess.

SACBARB: My sister told me the performances were really good this year.

Bon'O said...

We made it to the end! What a fun day in the nest. 435 posts already and every one a GEM in honor of our esteemed (though sniffly) architect. GET HEALTHY, CAROL aka 'GEM'.

G'night all!

Zona said...

G'night BON'O!! I'm about ready to call it an afternoon too! ;)

sacBarb said...

Good Night Bon and Zona. I'm heading off too.

Flying over briefly to say hello to all and good night. We spent the day at wrestling today..I still think it is too rough for little kids but who am I to say, I am just just the grandmother! Some of those little guys cry when they lose and it makes you want to hug all of them!!

Hi Joey and welcome to the nest. GOLDIE, you couldn't have given a better description of this place.

MEK: The NFC won at the end of the darn game. The AFC even had Peyton and we had two Broncos..Champ Bailey and John Lynch. I kind of dozed off and on during the end as it started late afternoon here.

Zona: You and I keep missing each other. I am throwing you a kiss!

Ok...thanks for the Grammy updates as I didn't watch it tonight..just the first couple of songs. It sounds like I should have for some of those songs and I would like to have seen Andy Williams. What was he on for and did he sing?

Night Everyone and have a good solid sleep!!! BTW NOWMERCY, I loved your blog today. I (as everyone) wished you lived closer. You sound like you give a great session to a customer. I used to be shy but not anymore. I had to laugh recently that my daughter and I went to for a massage and we both had men doing the massages. I mentioned to her when we were finished how we went in a room with a strange man, took off our clothes, enjoyed his massage and then paid him!! Hmmmmm

Night.

Jodi said...

DIANNE - LOL @ paying for men to "do" you and your daughter!!! And no, I'm not still crying over the Packers!!!

ITEACH - LOL @ the comment!!! Did your Dad make that dish?!!?

JOEY - Welcome to the Nest!!! And we'll just consider you one of the girls (just like WHABBY)!!!
