What's in a name?

our daily blog today
is from goldie

i can't wait to hear how
we all picked ours~~

What's in a name?

by Goldie

We were all given a name chosen by someone else when we were born. We had no say in it, and love it or hate, it is yours. Mine is Heidi.

Our online name is different. We got to make the choice as to what our name would be. My email, myspace and blogging name are all GOLDIE. Because of my affection to golden retriever's? No. I have never had one. I have a wonderful, beautiful Black Lab who I would throw myself, if need be, under a bus for. (I am hoping that won't be anytime soon!)

Years ago a little old man would call our office and ask questions about his account. Just checking if we had the correct address, beneficiary, etc. Nothing ever changed, so there was no need. It didn't take me long to figure out he was lonely and wanted to chat. This went on for about a year.

One day he said to me that I reminded him of his dog. Huh? I wasn't' sure if I should be insulted or not.

Then he said the nicest thing that I think I ever heard. He said that I was like his golden retriever, GOLDIE-she listened patiently while he rambled, never judged or interrupted and made him feel like what he said mattered.

Insulted? No, he paid me the highest compliment I had ever received.

A week later I got my first email account. When the tech asked what name I wanted to use- you guessed it- GOLDIE@..

That same day I found out the little old gentleman had passed away.
I have used that moniker ever since for everything online.

So how did you choose your online name? Is it your own, a made up one, your location? What is the story to your 'identity'?

Reception was okay tonight - not as WONDERFUL as last week - she made Meatballs and had pork and beans - (who makes those things to be eaten together) - anyway - the meatballs were good -

Cpgem - your blog about Mary Poppins - I triple LOVE that movie!!

AND - I know what you mean about having to sit next to someone that does not realize that they smell.

There is a lady in our scrapbook group that smells ALL the time - and it's NOT a good smell - and she is in upper management - I want to throw up whenever she is around........it's very sad!!

sacBarb said...

Joey: That video was great and you did a good job. Thanks for sharing it with us.

The kotex was just in case I got kneed in my "private part" I wanted it be cushioned for protection!

These owls are nuts, they will run, jump, smack, push while they march.

All types of protection is needed!

I've been away so long (spending every day working and running over to hold my beautiful little grandson) and I have so much catching up to do. I read all of today's comments, though. What a great topic, Goldie! It was such fun to read the origins of your names and learn a little more about all of you. Mine is pretty boring - I'm Canadian and I'm a girl (ok - haven't been a girl for many years, but in my MIND ....)! Oh yeah, JustLin - that "study"? Freakin' hysterical!!!

Just_Lin said...

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY HAVE MISSED IT ON THE PREVIOUS PAGE, THIS IS REALLY FUNNY!

UCLA Study

A study conducted by UCLA's Department of Psychiatry has revealed that the kind of face a woman finds attractive on a man can differ depending on where she is in her menstrual cycle.

For example: If she is ovulating, she is attracted to men with rugged and masculine features. However, if she is menstruating or menopausal, she tends to be more attracted to a man with duct tape over his mouth and a spear lodged in his forehead while he is on fire.

No further studies are expected.

Hey!

Hi MEK glad you're back! YAY!

Goldie I am so sorry your work had been violated, that is horrible.

I have to share a little tear-jerker moment I had today at work.

This elderly gentleman (83 years old) came in to have his ears flushed out. He had a hat on that said WWII Veteran.

I asked him about it, since my grandfather was killed in WWII. He told me he had been in the Phillipines.

We chatted for a while, my grandfather was killed in the Phillipines.

He showed me the different medals he had affixed on his hat, telling me the meaning of each.

I noticed he had 2 matching angel pins, and I asked him what those meant.

His eyes welled up with tears, and he told me that each angel represented each of his wives who had died. He started crying like a baby.

Of course I lost it then and there, here was a man who had seen the horrors of war, yet was still so affected by losing his wives.

Anyway, thought you all might enjoy that story. What a pleasure to meet someone like that.

OK time for Big Brother!

Just_Lin said...

EastBayJ That was such a sweet story. Thank you for sharing.

Mary/MI said...

Dagnabbit! I left just before the race! I am in the middle of doing laundry. I do most of my house hold chores at night. It's a carry over from working the night shift for 17 years!
Sorry I missed saying goodbye to MEK & Carol.
Canadiangrl~ I love the baby pictures! What a beautiful baby! You must be so proud! I haven't checked your pictures today. I will before I turn in.
Joey~pee-yuuu! I hope the spray did the job!

I was in the city (Lansing) all day today. I meet with my x-coworkers once a month for lunch. We are all retired, so we can take our time talking and catching up. Back to the laundry....

Mary/MI said...

Eastbay~Thanks for sharing, that was touching. You were sweet to let him share his feelings.

JustLynn~LMAO!! I don't ovulate anymore, but my son says I still have my "mommy dearest" moments LOL!!

Okay, how come I am busier during spring break than when I am working! Errands and appointments took up the whole day! Feels great to get things done though!

Goldie...I absolutely loved your story and have been thinking about it all day. How perceptive and compassionate you are/were to figure out that the elderly gentleman just needed to talk. You have a heart of gold or rather goldie! Sorry about what you had to deal with at work today....hope tomorrow is a vastly improved day.

Joey...loved the Rosie birthday video! As someone said on the video..she is pure yellow. And I say so is the video!

Jodi...thanks...if it all works out it is going to be great to finally meet the fabulous Tinka tomorrow. And yup, the camera is already in my purse!

bono...thanks for asking and I did get my piano and I am soooooooo excited to have it. Now if I could only play it!!! No, I do play but am very, very rusty!!!!

EBJ...what a lovely story and what a good person you are!

So the topic today has been extremely enlightening. It has been really cool to see the origin of the names that we have all become so familiar with. I have wondered where CPGEM, Tinkatia and all the others came from. For me, when I first started commenting on that other blog, I used my actual name but didn't feel right about having it out there. So then I went to Canadian Island Girl. But then I started reading posts from the wonderful Canadian Girl and decided it wasn't fair to her, as she was there first, that our names were so close. So went to Vancouver Island Girl. When the system changed over there and we had to sign in...there was some sort of error and I couldn't use Vancouver Island Girl so I shortened that to VIG! And sometimes here in the nest my alter ego The Notorious V.I.G. shows up! Cool!

whabbear said...

Goldie: I loved reading your story! I didn't know any of that!

Well, this is going to be pretty old and tired for those who've already read it on Ross's Blog, but...

whabbear is a deliberate misspelling of Wahb, the name of a grizzly bear who lived near Yellowstone Park back in the late 19th century. Wahb was orphaned as a cub, and spend his life alone, asking no quarter and giving none, until old age overtook him and he succumbed to the lure of the "death gulch", which held poisonous vapors and where he lay down and went to sleep for the last time.

Or so Earnest Thompson Seton, the Canadian wildlife writer and co-founder of the Boy Scouts, tells us in "The Biography of a Grizzly", one of my favorite childhood stories.

I always resonated strongly to Wahb's tale, and when I grew up and got involved in the bear (!) community, his seemed a very natural online handle for me to adopt. I just had to transpose the middle two letters because someone else had already snagged "wahbbear".

I highly recommend "Biography of a Grizzly" to all owls with pre-teen children. A very touching story.

IDOL: So glad Owls were posting for that two-hours. I felt like I was watching an SNL parody of Idol.

Just popping into say G'nite and to thank all the friends who sent me emails, messages and comments about the loss of my aunt. She was a way-cool lady who, who after raising her kids, adopted and raised 30 or so Pomeranians and a bevy of birds. She passed on her twin sons' 50th birthday. The one who called me was in Las Vegas on a long-planned birthday weekend with his wife to see psychic John Edward, and received word moments before the show. The story is too long to tell here, but I wish I'd had his story to ponder the day we blogged on the paranormal. Don't know quite what to think about it, but Dave was singled out from the audience for a reading that named his mom, mentioned her being surrounded by Poms but only one remained with her at her passing, info about her husband, etc. More than a little spoooooky!

BarbinWa~~Im with you. I get all excited at the thought of BlogBuddies lunching in 'Oregon'.
p.s. ~~ I think you should move to Walla Walla WA. Then, just like The View, we could have our own "BabaWaWa" :o)

Hi Owls!

Goldie: Fun blog! I've enjoyed reading how everyone chose their user names. Add me to the list of bloggers who thought you had a Golden Retriever. :) I'm sorry your day started off with bad news. I hope your company is able to recover quickly and the police are able to catch the thief.

I chose Amicus, because it means "friend" in Latin.

Mo: Congrats on the new job!

BonO: {{Hugs}} My condolences to you and your family.

DonnaJean: In my not so humble opinion, the best solution for that "Out of Memory" error is to dump Internet Explorer and download Firefox. ;) It's a compatibility problem between IE and whatever script is on line 202 of the website's source code. I honestly don't know how coders keep their sanity, because those type of problems seem to be never-ending with IE. Hopefully, the NBC techs will come up with a fix soon. Hugs and prayers for you and Laurie.

Goodnight everyone!
