Is this a Gift?

by zonababy

While writing about my purple bread gift yesterday I began thinking about all the strange Christmas and Birthday gifts I have received over the years. There was one gift that was certainly more memorable than the rest.

When my husband and I moved to California from Arizona, we didn't have much money. We rented an apartment in a not so nice neighborhood and lived there for about six months. He found a much better job, and the first thing we did was look for a new apartment. The one we found was perfect for us. New complex, washer & dryer included and a FIREPLACE! Having lived in Arizona so long, I had never had a real honest to goodness wood burning fireplace..I was thrilled.

The first Christmas after we moved into our new place we gathered at Mr. Z's parents house on Christmas Day to open gifts. There were fifteen people there, so it was loud and confusion reigned. We decided to open one present at a time so everyone could see what others had gotten. About half an hour into the unwrapping, I picked up a really heavy gift. It was wrapped in shiny gold paper and tied with elaborate ribbons.

I excitedly began to tear the paper, and while everyone watched..I unwrapped...a Duraflame log. One Duraflame log. I looked at my husband blankly, and then looked at the person who gave it to us, an architect for the city of San Bernardino. He was smiling, "For your new fireplace!" This was no joke gift..it was for real! We thanked him, while everyone else hid smiles and laughter.

From that day on, everyone joked at every gathering where gifts were opened..."I wonder if you'll get a log?".

Have you ever gotten a gift like this? One that kinda just shocked you? I'd love to hear similar stories!!

GOOD MORNING HOOTERS!!!!

I've missed you all.
Great Topic, Lynn!!!
I'm trying to dig in my memory bank, so I can join in. So far...nothing, nada, zip. You'd think with eight kids in my mom's family, I'd be able to come up with something to tell!

Zona, Another great topic! Hmmmmmm! Let me think on this too.
Might be time for me to buy some Ginko blah blah blah!!!

Anyway, I'm going to try and do some painting today. So much to do around here.
We have sun today, but it is still freakin cold here. At least we didn't get anymore snow, like they were talking about!
I'll try to pop in later today to see how all of you are doing!
Keep the funny stories coming..I may need some!
Thanks for all your sweet/funny comments on my page. I LOVE THEM!!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERYONE!!!
XOXOXO

Zona LOL Great Job!! Duraflame logs!

Hey he was trying. I think he even put some thought into it, knowing you were so excited about your new fireplace! It does crack me up that he wrapped them!

Oh wait I get it the wrapping is to help start the fire! A gift that keeps on giving! LMAO

I have to dig into my memory for weird gifts will post in a bit!

Good morning hooters!

YAY for Lynn D for getting first! Is this your first?

Hi Birdee!

The first thing that came to mind wasn't a gift I received, but one my best friend and her husband got for a wedding gift.

We were all watching them open their gifts, and there was a huge box all wrapped beautifully.

Inside was a beautiful redwood burl clock, hand made.

On the bottom, in those big metallic silver and black letters (the kind you see on mailboxes) were their names LISA AND JERRY and the wedding date below.

It would have been a lovely gift, except for the big, tacky letters across the bottom. Someone (I think it was Jerry's uncle) had put a lot of time and effort into making it.

The metallic letters were varnished on, so couldn't be removed.

Be back later! Have a great day!

ZONABABY...YAY! Not being one to celebrate Christmas, was that what they mean by Yule Log!!! I will have to think about a gift story to tell about. Great topic!!

LYNN...first! You are number 1 to me all the time! Congrats!

BIRDEEEEEEE...nice to see you here. Have fun painting. Hoot cluck!

Hi EBJ! How's Paula today?

Woohoo, lynn_d, first and second! Good morning and congrats!

Good morning, Birdee...Stay warm! Good Saturday morning, EBJ and Maureen!

And Zonababy...you finally did it! You listened to your Owl friends and wrote a blog....and it is fantastic! Way to go for taking that first big blog step! You made your Auntie Nort proud!!!!

A log...wood for Christmas...hmmm! I have to think on this one a bit...right now the strangest Christmas gift I can think of was hangers. Clothes hangers for Christmas means acting in response....oh, thank you just what I always wanted!!!

My frind Joni and I always try to include a gag gift with each gift giving occassion. One year it was the ugliest turkey stuff we could find. For her birthday in August, I had given her the FUGLIEST turkey gravy boat. I laughed so hard when I saw it in the store and it was only like 2.99. After I bought it, I took it to work and put a $40 dollar price tag on it! Then on my birthday in October...she re-gifted it back to me! I had planned on re-gifting it to her for Hanukkah, but on Thanksgiving she got engaged. So the wheels started spinning...I knew the perfect shower gift to give her...the Turkey gravy boat! Complete with a new price tag of $60!! Her shower rolls around and I made sure she opened that gift, before the real one. When she opened it she nearly pee'd her pants from laughing so hard! The other guests were in the dark about why we were rolling on floor laughing so hard! Joni had 3 showers, and as the maid of honor I had to attend all 3. She made me promise not to buy a gift for each, that only I and her mom and future MIL would be the only ones that knew, so I sorta agreed. At her second shower, she told me she was going to re-wrap the real gift I had given her and she would take it along herself. For her engagement, I had given her a thermal picnic backpack she told me she had wanted if she ever got engaged. At the shower, she opens "my gift" to her...it was the backpack...and she filled it with a bunch of crap from her house! I laughed so hard I had to leave the room! She was crying as she pulled each piece of junk outta the backback! When she got to the gift I had snuck in, she almost threw up...matching fugly salt and pepper shakers to the turkey gravy boat!

Might I add, they made a lovely tablescape at her first Thanksgiving as a mrs. NOT!!

sorry for the long novel!

Maureen said...

Oh, another fugly gift story. My friend Mary is a much older soul then I am. She dresses way older then she is and our tastes in fashion are about 180 degrees apart. One year she gave me an UGLY old lady sweater. But the problem was she had the same sweater that she loved! I had to act all thrilled to get it and even wear it a few times to keep the charade up!

Zona - GREAT blog!! (see that wasn't so bad, was it??!!) Thanks for sharing...

I can think of a couple of gifts.

My father's mother liked to crochet - which isn't a bad thing - She made lovely ponchos, hats, slippers, etc. - Only problem was the COLORS - she would start them and then just grab WHATEVER skein of yarn was near by - SO,the colors never matched anything - each Christmas, my sister and I would receive "matching" stuff and my mom was great - she would have us put it on - she'd take a picture and we never had to wear it again!! :-)

MEK in AZ said...

Wedding present - we received a wedding present that we STILL don't know what it was - and noone else can figure it out either.. It was THEE most beautifully wrapped gift that we received - it did NOT have a tag on it and it was a rusted out wired box thing - I can't even describe it, cuz we have NO idea what it was supposed to be - AND, with no card, we couldn't even thank the lovely people!! :-)

goldie said...

Way to go Zona- great blog today. We are sure to get some great laughs out of this one!

congrats lynn on 1st and good morning to you and all you little owlettes.

I can think of 2 mind numbing gifts. On our first Christmas together Mr, Goldie and I got a 'set' of plastic cups (you collected them one at a time when you filled up with gas) from his brother. I still can't stand that man....

The other was from his sister. She had moved to Florida for a year and moved back. For Christmas that year she presented us with the pride and joy of all her years of shopping!
It was a clock. In the shape of, and painted like a palm tree. It was shalacked to a fine gloss and about 2 feet tall. And the numbers were decorated as coconuts. OMG it was the FUGLIEST thing I had ever seen in my life, but she thought it was tits. So for a year I had to hang that thing in my living room. THANKFULLY when we moved I had to sadly report that it had broken (wink, wink) and could no longer be displayed.

MEK in AZ said...

Okay - this is a GOOD one!!

It was Mr. MEK and my first Christmas as a married couple!! He had asked me SEVERAL times what I wanted for Christmas - I even took him DIRECTLY into the jewelry store that had the emerald earrings that I LONGED to own!! Many times, I took him to the SAME place (making sure they were there)!!

So, Christmas morning, we are opening gifts - He handed me a box - I got SO excited cuz I was SURE he had taken the hint!! :-) To my surprise - I had a coupon book for OIL CHANGES FOR MY CAR!! WTF - needless to say, I did NOT get my earrings and I was NOT happy with him......

So, now, we don't exchange any presents at Christmas, birthday, anniversary - we just buy the stuff when we see it and want it or need it!!!!! :-)

I kept getting FOAD last night and could not say goodnight to anyone!!

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!!

MEK in AZ said...

Oh and might I add - Mr. MEK was SO proud of himself that he had taken care of me and my car, so that we would be SAFE!!! He really didn't understand WHY I was not happy!!

MEN!!!!!!! :-)

Ok I have been thinking about this.

Grandma in the photo on myspace gave I guess what you would call practical gifts to everyone each year. I mean everyone got a gift with seven children and about 27 grand children she included us all.

Grandma was on a fixed income as she and Grandpa had divorced after 39 years of marriage. Her solution was that each woman or girl got a pair of knee high nylons and the men and boys got a pair of socks. If you married or got married you then would get the couples gift. The cheapest box of chocolates she could find! They were awful! LOL

You know since she has passed away I miss getting those candies at Xmas!

Last year for my birthday my Dad actually remembered and made the trip to our house to give me a gift.

It was wrapped in the usual bag from the store he had bought it. I slowly opened the bag and there was a box with the most unusual pair of slippers I have ever owned! He was so excited for me to take them out of the box. Well folks they vibrate!!! LMAO Yes they have a switch on the side you turn them on and away they go!! He even thoughtfully included the batteries.

I of course put them on for all to see. As my husband was trying to hide is smirk and my kids were trying not to laugh!! Until Dad pipped up and said turn them on and walk around!

Hey gang it is like being on a fun house ride! I started to stagger around and keep my balance while saying "Wow Dad these are great"!!

That is the only time I have worn them! Any of you single Owls need a pair of vibrating slippers????

My Card had scratch off tickets included so it was not a total loss! I won 10 dollars! I guess he figured I could by more batteries with the money I might win!

MEK in AZ said...

Lynn D - congrats on first..

Birdee - hope you get some painting done today

EBJ - glad you enjoyed "Price" last night!! Too much fun, huh? I second Mo's question, how is Paula doing?

VIG - clothes hangers - were they at least wooden ones!! LOL Are you feeling better today?

MO - isn't it great to have a friend that has a sense of humor like yourself!!

Goldie - plastic cups - oh my!! I can't believe you "broke" that clock!! :-)

Lots of people getting clocks!!
:-)

Good morning to all who land in the nest today!! :-)

Good Morning Owls!

Zona: YAY for you!! You did it, and you did a great job! Thanks for the fun topic! My family opens gifts one at a time too so we can all see what everyone else got.

I get some nice gifts from my clients at Christmas, but sometimes, I get some odd gifts too. One year, a client gave me a used snowman candle holder. The carrot nose was broken off, and there was melted wax residue still on it. :)

This wasn't a Christmas gift, but the funniest gift I've ever received from a client was a girdle. LOL! I had just returned to work after being off for 6 weeks recovering from a hysterectomy, and she insisted I wear it to protect my stomach. It was very sweet of her so I wouldn't tell her this, but I never did wear it. :)

From Area 51...

Goldie: I love game shows too, especially the old ones like Match Game. That show always made me laugh. :)

EastBayJ: I still have my Girl Scout sash too. I can't remember what any of the badges mean though. LOL!

VIG: Thanks for sweet words!

I have to get back to work so I'm sending a warm, friendly Hello to everyone! I'll be back later to catch up on all the funny stories.

Hope you all have a great day!

FROM AREA 51 - A big thank you from Jake for the kind comments about his project!!! Thanks to TURTLE, MO, LOVEY, LYNN D, GOLDIE, CAROL, SACBARB, ITEACH & MEK!!!

ZONA - A great blog!!! I don't know why you were worried!!! You have the gift to both make me laugh everyday - and the talent to write it well!!!

The only FUGLY gift I can think of is from my Grandma - God bless her - she is also on a fixed income. One year all of us Granddaughters got the same matching butterfly clocks. Now, mind you - I love butterflies - but I swear - she must have found these at some deep discount store - back in 1975. Avacado green, brown, and orange.......I'm sorry but it did not go with not even one room in my house!!! Funny, I think I had the same "accident" that GOLDIE did!!!

LYNN D - Congrats on first!!!

BIRDEE - Great to see you here today!!! I've missed your chickenowl - and your wicked good sense of humor. Good luck with the painting.......are you for hire? We're in dire need of some painting here!!!

Well I have no excuse I proof read my post and everything! All kinds of errors. That should have been piped up not pipped up! LOL

I am cracking up at the stories!

Gifts gone wrong! LMAO

MEK I love the oil changes for your car! How romantic! I told Mr. Lynn D early on those were not gifts also including pots and pans, vacuum cleaners, mops etc... Those were for household maintanance period and I would brain him if he gave them as gifts!!

Mo: I loved the fugly turkey exchange! LMAO I just can't imagine why you would not want a granny sweater!! You know they are so functional you can even store kleenex in the sleeve!

Hi Birdee!!! Tweet Tweet!

Viggy: Good Morning to you!

EBJ: Hey a designer clock with your name on it!!! Priceless!!

Goldie: What the hell is wrong with a fine set of Gas station platic cups??? Hey he had to work hard to get the set! They may even be collectibles now! LMAO

Oh and those slippers are not even practicle!!! They only have one speed!

goldie said...

MEK- it was actually in the driveway..... but I wanted to make sure that didnt have to lie when I said the clock 'was broken'
Mr. Goldie was right there cheering me on.

Amicus- I love Tattle Tales and Match Game and the "NO WHAMMYS" one!!

Good Morning everyone - Thanks for all the nice comments and messages left for me these past few days. I am so proud of Zona for writing a great blog for today. I wish I could think of an ugly present story but I can't. I can tell you about the sweetest present I ever received. Will that do?
I have collected Hummels for 40 years. My husband used to buy me one each Christmas. One year when my kids were little they wanted to buy me a Hummel. They put all their money together and came up with $10. They found a perfect
"Hummel" for me at K-Mart. It was a little girl playing tennis. Actually is was a really good imitation of a Hummel. They were so excited to watch me open it and I was so excited to receive it. It has the place of honour in my China cabinet with all my other ones. I treasure it more than all the others put together.
Have a good day little owls.

Here is my best "fake out" gift. One Christmas Mr. Jodi and I had decided not to exchange gifts, so imagine my surprise when I had a package to open from him. Well, he likes to not only surprise me, but to also fake you out in how he wraps things!!! When I unwrapped the package - it was a can of mixed nuts. Oh great.....I thought, until he had me open the can. Imagine my surprise when I found a little box from a jewelry store inside - with diamond earrings in it!!!

Good afternoon!

Great blog, Zona! I can't think of a gift that I've gotten but I do remember one my Mom received once from her brother's wife (another Aunt story!). She and my Mom never really got along. Aunt C gave Mom four paper placemats for Christmas one year. Mom was so furious but she never said anything. She just wrapped them right back up and gave them to Aunt C the next Christmas with a note saying, "I enjoyed these so much that I found some just like them so you could enjoy them, too." Bad Momma.

Hey mek, I tried the Vicks and I did cough less! But, it wasn't a true experiment since I put it on my feet, chest, throat and nose! So, I don't know if the feet thing worked. But, my feet were nice and soft this morning ...

Lynn D, I can just picture you walking on those vibrating slippers! Fun house ride!! LOL!!

Happy Saturday Owls.

Zona, You did it. Wasn't that fun?? And you did an excellent job.

Birdee: What are you painting?

Lynn D: I had some vibrating slippers and I put themn in the Goodwill pile. I even tried walking on them too and it was just too weird. And I LMAO @ the Kleenex in the sleeve - my mother always did that.

Mo: Gag gifts are a riot. When my SIL got married, my Hubby and his other sister "fixed up" their house before they got back from their honeymoon. They short sheeted the bed and put rice in it. Then they put rice in all their shoes and wherever else they thought appropriate. They got married in Sept. and for Christmas, we got all the rice back in Rubbermaid containers - cooked! Too funny.

Vig: I got clothes hangers from one of the kids that came to my tenth birthday party. They were pretty but WTH?

And finally, for my birthday one year my Hubby gave me a Lawnmower! I didn't even mow the lawn because of my allergies. The kids put him up to it and they all cracked up when he led me outside to see my fab gift. I wasn't happy until he gave me another package with a beautiful bathrobe in it.

It is raining so hard here in NJ, which makes it a very gloomy day. It is suppose to be like this all day. For some reason the rain makes me feel sad, I think I am like Rosie, I need the sun!

I am going to do some paper work while I am at the office. So I will check back later.

I have not read the comments yet, I

ZONA!~ IT'S ABOUT FREAKING TIME!!! :)~ I really hope you aren't out running your errands wanting to vomit!!! Your blog is GREAT!!! :D

Mr Tina's family does everything so different from my own. On Christmas Eve we open presents one at a time and make a big production out of what each person gets! They all like to tease and give gag gifts. One year, it was my turn to open a gift from his sister....I opened it, and it was a "lovely" sweater. I was waiting for the laughter....and it didn't come. So I ooooo'd and ahhhh'd and thanked her. It was the color of puke and the most gawd awful thing I've ever seen! I don't even think WalMart would carry that thing! I put it on so they could see that it fit and NEVER put that thing on again!

One year for my birthday (when the kids were really young), hubby took the kids to the dollar store to pick things out for me. I could have killed him! The kids were all excited about their purchases and wanted me to wear the earrings they bought (the ones that made my ears infected!) and wear the "perfume" they bought (the ones that gave me a rash on my neck!) Luckily I did get good use out of the Monkey tongs and Alligator pasta fork...until they broke!!!

For my 40th....my brother surprised me and came to visit with my nephew. My parents gave me a lot of money to spend as I wanted (scrapbooking supplies, of course!) and my in-laws mailed their gift! It was a box of 12 tumblers from Costco! I couldn't stop laughing. I found out later that they didn't realize it was my 40th and they were kind of embarrassed.....but since I love a lot of ice in my Diet Pepsi's, I really did love the darn things! Of course, since they have to be hand washed....I've only ever used the same two over and over~ I should bring the rest here! :)~

Jodi~ YOU DON'T CATCH ME ON THE CRAPPER.....I go there on purpose to talk to YOU!!! :)~

Mo~ that is the best....having a friend like that....I'm off to visit a crazy friend today~

Okay~ I'm off to read the past two days blogs and posts~....oh...and to call Zona to let her know that her blog is great~ :D

I have been getting the FOAD monster all day! With that said I have breaking news! My Dad's surgery was a success. The surgeon repaired his damaged vocal cord and my Dad was able to talk to me for the first time in over half a year.
Okay now for the strange gift award. My beloved and I spent our first Christmas together. I collect Limited Edition life size dolls that are replicas of children. He put a huge square box under the Christmas tree. My sister came over and we spent hours marveling at this box and wondering which doll he might have bought for me. Christmas Eve my tongue is hanging out and I rip open the wrapping paper. I open it and the gift is a huge lighted $500world globe. so many thoughts whirled through my head like OMG $500 spent on a globe, OMG where did he come up with the idea of buying me a globe, OMG where am I supposed to put the huge globe. I tried my very best to hide my shock and smile really big and pretend that I loved this globe. To this day I wonder why on earth a globe. Perhaps because I grew up in Germany and I did travel extensively....?? Anyhow, I got a globe. LOL. It's the thought that counts as we all know and I'm sure some where in his mind he thought..... Lord, I don't know what he was thinking. :0).

ZONA!! WTG!! You wrote a great blog, thank you.

Lynn D Congrats #1!! Wtg.

I have enjoyed the shares today. Ty.

I think I would put the jar of pickled eggs I received as a Christmas gift from my SIL on this list.
I'm sure her intent was to offend, since we were the only ones to receive this gift.
We all sat around the fireplace opening gifts and when my hubby opened hers, he looked at me with a grin, and to her big surprise WE LOVE PICKLED EGGS I accepted the gift like it was a new car.So I guess you could say, she had egg all over her face.hehe..the situation didn't turn out as she had planned.

My hubby and I don't exchange gifts. We usually buy a big gift for both of us to enjoy, but not long ago he surprised me with a beautiful "Stairway To Heaven" diamond ring.
It is my cherished gift of all time.

Another pile of snow is being dumped on us today.
** Sigh** It has to end sometime.
Wishing ya'll a happy Saturday.

TINA...I love the dollar store. I find a lot of the gags I get at them. (some herer also have some great scrapbooking and card stuff!)

Joni's hubby (the one I gave the turkey crap to) is really lazy! He calls me for her birthday and Christmas to find out what to buy her. And he waits till the last minute. I always teased him that the Speedway gas station is open 24 hrs and he can always wait till 11:50 the night before to shop for her! Well, now every year I get him something from Speedway for his stocking! And one year, for his birthday Joni went to Speeedway and bought a soda at the fountain, washed out the cup and wrapped it for his birthday gift!

SACBARB...I admit it...when I don't have any pockets, you can find a tissue in my sleeve!

Zona Were you actually worried about writing this blog? It is super good! You write really well.

LynnD I see your long legs got you here first today. Congrats!

Lovey My how lovely you are in your habit! LMAO

You all have some really good and funny stories. Right now I can't think of any bad gifts I've gotten. I probably blocked them out of my memory.

Good Lord I go away for an hour and Lovey joins a nunnery!!

Hey Mo: Good talking to you to!

Tinka: I had problems with the blog site today too!

Hi Ya Just Lin!!!!!

Zona said...

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the nice comments on this, my first and probably last attempt at a blog! I haven't been able to get on the internet all frickin' day! The server has been down.

LYNND: Congrats on #1 & #2! I know he tried, but it was just so weird to get a single Duraflame.

BIRDEE: Good to see you! I missed you and your little chickenowl!

EBJ: My uncle use to make those clocks..and I cringe just thinking of those big letters marring the surface!
I was glad to hear Paula is taking well to her meds and treatments.

VIG: My brother and his girlfriend once gave Mr. Z and I those little corncob holders..a pack of four. And a set of ten plastic hangars. I never figured out the logic of this.

MO: I loved your post! Gag gifts are the best, especially when they are not accidents! ;)

MEK: Can we see some of the pictures your mom took of those colorful items on your myspace? My mom's best friend mixed colors like that too in an afghan for us. When she would come over, we displayed it proudly. When she left it went back into the extra bedroom.

GOLDIE: Sorry to hear you lost your beautiful clock! ;)

Breaking this into two posts again..

Zona said...

MEK: Oil changes?? LOL! That's like when I got a giftcard from my hubby for HIS favorite store!

LYNN D: My mom got vibrating slippers from my grandmother one year! Mom had arthritis in her feet and she put those slippers on and it was "Ow Ow Ow.." until someone pulled them off! My grandma was sure she was faking!

JODI: Sorry I missed your call..and thank you. Your grandma must have bought what we called 'dustables' at the same store mine did. She tried so hard, but the colors were always a little 'off'.

TINKA: I got the same message over and over..then my server went down altogether. I don't know what happened.
I remember buying my dad Aqua Velva EVERY year when I was a kid. He made a it seem like it was the best smelling cologne ever. My mom had a collection of plates from Bradford and when I was 9 I bought her one from Woolco. She hung it on the wall right next to all the rest.

TINA: I have the same glasses! I only use the red one and the yellow one. Thank you for calling today. Mr. Z says we will get a cell phone and name it 'the Raunchy Pistol'...

LOVEY: Pickled eggs? I can't even imagine what those taste like. Maybe I should just stop thinking about it. ;)
Now I have to google the name of your ring--I want to see it!! OMG! The new avatar!! ROFL!!

J/LIN: Terrified. I almost cancelled it three times...

CPGEM: Yep, this was really difficult for me. I am so glad all my good owl friend's supported me.

The across the street neighbors from hell are screaming at each other and throwing things. I thought they had sold the house, but the inspectors told them they had to fix some stuff first. I think I might have to get away from the window! Thanks again everyone for being so nice.

Zona said...

SHOOT!! Meant to say Hi to AMICUS!!

SACBARB: This year hubby bought 'us' a leaf blower..this is what I mean about him buying us something he wants!!

whabbear said...

Yuck... I can't think of any bad gift stories either. The closest was last Christmas, when I got my sis and bro-in-law a very expensive bottle of wine for Christmas... only to discover that they had a case of them in their wine cellar!

Oh, well...

MEK in AZ said...

Whabby - at least you had GOOD taste!! LOL

Okay - Mr. Mek is grilling our steaks - THICK ribeyes - and he got sidetracked in the garage - he came RUNNING thru the house - opened the grill - and you could just smell BURNT - he came inside laughing and said -

"Okay - You can tell the nest people that I ruined dinner!!"

Don't ya just love him!! :-)

So - I am off to eat my charred dinner!!

Whabby and Zona - at least I won't have to use the "juice" of my steak for my gravy tonight!! (the other night - I ordered my steak med/well and it came mooing!!

75!!!!

♥LOVEY♥ said...

hehe I got chocolate hehe

Zona said...

LOVEY: More chocolate? Don't drip any on your Habit...;)

Bon'O said...

ZONABABEEEEE!!! Finally! What a perfect visual of you unwrapping the beautiful gift. Oh, the anticipation! I kept waiting for the architect-friend to say "This is just to represent the case of Duraflames waiting for you in the garage." That would have been a not-so-bad gift, but ONE? Bwaahaahaa...that is funny....and a VERY well-written story. Hope you WON'T let it be the last!

I have no fugly-gift stories that come to mind. I do remember, when growing up, I always tried to give something sentimental and girly to my mom. Dad left romantic homemade cards and poems on the breakfast table for her almost daily, but for Christmas we could count on him to give her a new rifle, fishing pole, Coleman stove or sleeping bags, and to renew 'her' subscription to 'Field & Stream'. Thank goodness, they shared a love of the great outdoors.

Just here for a quick Hello and to wish everyone a relaxing or productive (you choose!) weekend.

There's a nun in the house! Do I have to be on my good behavior? Tina will have to watch her mouth too! No one say fuck LOL!!

MEK~When I was going with my now husband, the first Christmas he bought me was an iron! He was always Mr. Practical. Just before Christmas he would ask me "What do you need?"
After we were married he read some where (I think Ann Landers or Miss Manners)to NEVER give practical gifts. After that I got some nice "bling bling". After 29 yrs of marriage he is back to practical LOL!

LOL "Jewish nuns"

I want in on the vibrating raffle!
I would prefer that the "one" speed was on "high though heh heh!

Zona~ How is your new "sucker" working??

night.owls.sb said...

I don't like living in the dark ages.

Mary/MI said...

That was "vibrating SLIPPERS" LOL!!

iteach said...

I personally have never recieved an unique gift, but my husband's side of the family celebrates Christmas in a crazy way.

Every year we get together Christmas night at Aunt Wendy's house. She lives in a really old big house which is good. Due to the fact that there is usually about 75 relatives there.

Uncle Gary roofs house for a living, but he also likes to collect treasures out of dumpsters.

At 10:00 every Christmas night he unloads about eight bags of his treasures on the dining room floor. We all dive into at once. It doesn't matter what your social economic background is, everyone dives into the dumpster goodies.

We laugh about our new treasures through out the year. We always wonder what will be in the dumpster bags this year.

Great blog! I could write a book on the subject. Mr. CG is truly hit and miss with gifts - he's given me huge diamond rings and fur coats and some of the worst freaking gifts possible (some I still haven't figured out what the hell they are). And of course there are those birthdays and Christmases when there is NO gift! LOL

I just wanted to thank you so much for your good wishes, comments and prayers for my daughter and new grandson. You guys are the BOMB! I'm so sorry I haven't been around and haven't responded personally to you all, but I have just some out of the fog and I'm pretty much going to the hospital as much as I can (I get baby withdrawal after a few hours). But please know that it is truly appreciated. Btw, I am putting up a new picture every day of the new love of my life - new one today!

I hide flashlights all over the house too, because I don't like the dark.

However, my two little boys find them and they think they are toys.

Last year Aunt Joanne had my son Philip's name in the Christmas drawing and she bought five flashlights for his present.

Philip thought it was cool, but I thought it was kinda of weird. I had to laugh.

Thanks Mo

Zona - half of Indiana used to not do Savings Time - but I'm not sure if they do that any more or not..

SO - please - for those of you that call us in AZ - we will now be on California time!! :-)

I always have to remind my family members!!

Oh and Iteach - apparently, the time is changing earlier than normal and will last longer..

My Gift story:

My very dear friend Joni died of AIDS several years ago, she got it from her ex boyfriend who was a drug user.

When I first met Joni, she was very upfront about her illness, I accepted her for who she was with no boundaries.

She was on the AIDS cocktail for years, however they did not have the advanced medication's that they have now. When her T cells hit 15 we knew it was only a matter of time.

I visited her often, held her hand, and kissed her forehead always!

When she passed her dad was cleaning her apartment, he came to my office with a small little aloe plant and asked me to take care of it, I explained to him I did not have a green thumb and really don't know if would survive.
He then told me she used it for the sores on her body that accompany the AIDS virus. I took it and put it in my office window.

Ten years later, I still have that aloe plant, however it has grown so big that I have to keep repotting it. So I now have 4 large pots brimming over with Aloe, So very thick and strong, Just as Joni was!

I find myself trimming them, decorating them for Christmas, and when one seems to stuffed I repot!

I call it "Joni", as these aloe plants have become my friends!

That was the best gift ever!

♥LOVEY♥ said...

changing clocks means spring is here or coming any day... well damn it looks like Christmas here :o(

night.owls.sb said...

mo You have a friend Joni and so did I ♥♥♥

MEK in AZ said...

Cpgem - wow - that is a powerful story - thank you for sharing..

Maureen said...

MEK... with all the crap I have, someone asked about cat themed cards and I have nothing for that either! Not even a fricken cat stamp! I guess Michael's will be calling my name when the snow stops and I can plow my way outta the garage!

I better be able to get out tomorrow...will be outta cigs by then!

I find it ironic when we are "SPRINGING" ahead as we are having a blizzard! almost 2 ft. already!

iteach said...

The Mr. just got home and he said Arizona doesn't spring forward, because they don't need an extra hour of sun! :)

♥LOVEY♥ said...

Ohhhhhhhhh Carol that is a wonderful story!!
Not only a gift that keeps on giving but a gift given to you that keeps the life of Joni alive and thriving.

♥LOVEY♥ said...

Mo exactly!!!!! How can we be thinking and springing ahead into spring when we are buried under snow..lol

MEK in AZ said...

Iteach - since we don't spring forward - the workers (construction, landscaping, etc) have an extra hour of COOL weather in the a.m. - it gets SO hot in the afternoon that they just can't work.....

iteach said...

Speaking of candles, every year for Christmas I always have students that give me candles that are apple scented.

Teachers=apples

I absolutely love candles but my least favorite scent of all is apple scent! I love that my students thought of me, but I give them to the teacher next to me.

goldie said...

Well FUCK me running! This foading shit is getting tedious.

Sorry, had to get that out. Don't tell the nun. Have a brownie and you'll forget all about it. I'll be slinky off to the naughty corner now...

I had one more story of the worst gift I never got!! In-law's (seeing a trend here?) at Christmas and I am pregnant. I unwrap my gift from good old FIL & MIL and it is a picture from the Penney's catalog of a top. A maternity top. A little confused, I say thank you. She responds. "well that is the top you WERE going to get but they were out of stock". That was it. No substitute, no back order- just not getting it.

No apologizes CG- love up that new baby as much as you can. Thanks for sharing the pics.
